Can anyone tell me if there's a way to find out if my MBP is glossy or matte without opening the box?

I want to make sure it's right before I crack open the tape.

Can you tell by the serial # or some other indicator on the outside of the box?

Thanks!:)

Just crack open the tape and check. If they gave you something you didn't order they're obviously not going to charge a restocking fee or anything.

Marked in what way?

Clearly marked in plain English, or in some type of code or hidden SKU indicator?

Clearly, in plain English...well, abbreviations anyway. Mine says on the sticker: MBPRO 15/2.33/2x1G/160/SD/GLSY

Not sure if Matte says Matte (or MTTE;) ) but Glossy will say GLSY.

Hope that helps.

Oh please shut up already. Instead of constantly upping your post count and rubbing it in for us who got affected, just go off and enjoy your MBP. We don't need to hear about it.

For all we know your opinion of "flawless" may be highly subjective too. I noticed you added a qualifier saying that "blah blah blah nature of LCD screens means a narrower viewing angle..." Not true. My NEC 2080UX+ > any CRT you got any day. I am used to that LCD. This MBP definitely doesn't come close to even half that standard.

And maybe we're tired of the posts that say ALL 9C60 screens are crap when we're staring at one without any problems. I'll accept there are some screens out there that have the issues that have been described, but not all of them. And as I've said before, those people upset about their problems are the ones more likely to seek out a forum and post about it. It's a misrepresentative sample.

And hey, I'll also admit that maybe I just can't see the problem with mine. Anything's possible, but I also am not about to seek out fault with a product I'm perfectly happy with.

My C2D MBP (base) just arrived today. Unfortunately, it has both the uneven brightness issue AND a dead pixel.

You are tired of reading such posts?

*DING* Nobody told you to read them. We are just trying to correlate and put together more information on which machines are affected and which aren't. If you are happy with your machine, good for you! But between you guys getting an extraordinarily good machine, or just fail to notice the flaws for lack of knowing better, I'd go with the latter. Sorry, I just don't trust your luck that much, no offense to you guys.

Alright, let's all calm down. :)

I do apologize if I've rubbed anyone the wrong way with my broad sweeping generalizations, and take back my statement that all 9C60 15-inch MBP screens are unevenly lit. I mean, I haven't seen them all, so I can't justifiably state that they all exhibit the screen issues. But, I will say that of all the ones I've seen in real life (my two returned C2D MBPs and the ones at Apple retail stores) and on the web, they all have dimmer right sides to varying degrees. Whether this means that all 15-inch MBPs with 9C60 screens have this issue, I can't say for sure, but I do feel they make up more than a significant number of existing/shipping C2D MacBook Pros.

All I wanted was a fairly well-made MacBook Pro (with a decent display). I'm not so sure now when I'll be able to buy one. I don't want to go through that rollercoaster return procedure with Apple anymore.

i ordered my glossy macbook pro yesterday. It hasn't shipped yet, but i just hope the display isn't unevenly lit because i will be needing it soon. I really don't look forward to dealing with applecare. I'm just gonna keep my fingers crossed.

hooray!...and a question for Farside161 or other portlanders (oregon, that is)

So on a whim I check the tracking for a 3rd time today (if it weren't for seeing patients all day in clinic, then spending all night working on notes on the EMR, i'm sure it would have been a more respectable geeky number like 10th time)...

my MBP, printer, .mac and applecare boxes are all in portland!!! I don't know why the printer and applecare/.mac were sent separately. Anyway, since tomorrow is OB didactics day, I'll be home by 3 pm. Of course, with my luck, the following scenarios may play out
1. the fed-ex bastards will hold on to it since they're not expected to deliver it until the 18th and have other more urgent packages to deliver (that happened 2 yrs ago; the tracking had it in honolulu for 2 days and actually would have delivered even later but I was sick with a virus and pissed off and went to the distribution center and demanded my package - never mess with a spoiled baby sister)
2. They will attempt delivery when I'm still at clinic and didactics so I'll end up waiting until this weekend (which I had thought might happen...do they do saturday deliveries?)
3. My OB patient will go into labor tomorrow afternoon and while I would have been home to accept the package, I was instead at the hospital bored watching a fetal heartbeat & toco (contractions) strip looking at the fed-ex site saying out for delivery or attempted delivery at 3:30 pm.

rather pessimistic I know, but hey, if I anticipate the worst, I can be pleasantly surprised by the best (the successful delivery).

Of course, I'll have to work on more clinic notes and finish the journal club handout before I can play. And then it won't be until this weekend that I can really play with it. So I suppose having to wait may just be easier on me. I mean, to have the computer in my possession and know that I have more important higher priority issues to address before I can really touch it...and trust me, I can't dupe myself into the whole, "I only want to look at it and turn it on for a little bit" routine. That's just asking for trouble.

oh and quick question for Farside161: I went to The Mac Store for the first time on saturday. Seems kind of small but nice folks (i shopped at the eugene store when I was in college...or so I was told since they had my old eugene address in their computer system). Anyway, do you find them more useful than the apple store folks? You mentioned ordering your computer through their store. Have you ever taken stuff to them for repair. Or taken any classes? Not like I have time to take classes longer than 1 day...They are a little more convenient than the downtown store since parking is right there and free. And way more convenient than the other 2 stores in Tigard. Besides, after all the time I spent salivating over the MBP at Bridgeport, i must creep them out or annoy them since all I did was go there and play and convince myself that I did want it but could wait. Oh and to print out coupons for borders. :D What about PowerMax. Aren't they somewhere in portland? They didn't respond to my email about customizing the MBP when I was browsing last month so that was annoying.

Just for the record mine is also dimmer on the right side than on the left. When I get my calibrator I will see how much dimmer it exactly is, but it is definitely noticeable.

Well, Mr. "24 posts/day to up his post count," aren't you the self-righteous one!

I don't post to "rub it in," I post in response to irresponsible, uneducated, misinforming posters who continue to claim an "endemic defect" of MBP screens! I'm sure that there are defective individual screens, (any run, from any manufacturer will have some) but not all!

When I see repeated false claims of "crap quality," "they're all defective," "Apple sux, I'm gettin' a Dell!" etc., and then read posts from potential MBP buyers that they've been scared off as a result .... that's irresponsible, and needs to be responded to!

And I don't give a rat's a$$ if you "believe" me or not about my screen - hell, this is the internet, and for all I know, you could just be another PC troll on a Mac forum for kicks, making up problems about a MBP you don't even have - I really don't care. (I mean really! 191 posts in only 8 days? Holy crap - don't you have a job or school??? )

For those who truly have screen issues, I hope that Apple either repairs, or replaces them, and that you're happy with your MBP! I've always had good experience with AppleCare - I've had 3 different notebooks sent in, (2 PBooks, 1 iBook), and all came back quickly, properly repaired, without any damage done to the case in the process (something I worried about each time!)

No probably not all screens are defective but I would have to say a good majority of them, in fact everyone Ive seen so far. All the MBPs in my local Apple Store, 2 of my friends MBPs and mine...look at all the complaints. Something is def wrong here.

Youre coming off as super-agressive man, chill. Seriously.

Enjoy your MBP, Quit calling people with ****** MBPs trolls.

Hey guys, I Just bought a C2D Macbook Pro 15" 2.33 Ghz. Thank god I dont have no issues with the screen so far :) or no dead pixel but I do have a problem with my battery. On the battery icon on top of the screen it has a X on it and it says no battery available but the battery does work cause I can use after I unplugged the cord. Do any of you guys have that problem or someone knows what it is? thanks

Want to get my web order number? Maybe you can validate with Apple yourself for your own satisfaction. On the other hand who is to say your mythical MBP exists?

What happened to the flawless word in your signature? Delusions shattered?

The part number is the same irregardless of the screen. It is a custom specification, much like a "160GB hard drive upgrade"

I thought this too, but if you order the glossy screen, it comes up with the shorter code the same as a custom HD, i think it only changes if you move an option from the stock config, which, on the MBP is matte. sorry im just being paranoid i just dont want the wrong thing brought back from the states lol.

Just crack open the box and take a peek! :p

Anyway how do you bring the computer in with its box and avoid import taxes? Isn't the whole point of buying in the states tax evasion?

The matte display specification simply omits the GLSY.
