It appears that all 00009C60 displays I've seen exhibit uneven illumination to varying degrees. All of them appear to have a brighter left side than the right side, no matter how "great" they appear to look.

Pictures of enjoyapple's MBP display seem to show this also.

Finally I have arrived.....
In general, which part of the screen is affected with "uneven" screen brightness? I read it affects lower part of the screen. It is uneven across the entire width of the lower part of the screen? Or, is it only small part of the screen?
For those who posted about the uneven brightness, have you changed the wall paper color to see if the brightness issue is not exaggerated by the color of the wall paper?

Logic Pro Reverb Instance Benchmarks

I got my figures from this thread.

One guy got 27 instances of Sculpture on his 2.33ghz C2D (2gb RAM), and another got 23 instances on his 2.16ghz C2D (1gb RAM).

As I stated in the BBL thread, that's a 7% increase in clock speed showing a 17% increase in plugin count. Perhaps I should be thinking that's a 7% increase in each core? (x 2 = 14% increase?). Unfortunately these are the only two benchmarks that have been posted, and they don't follow the convention of the old CD systems, which faster speeds usually only increased plugin counts from say 17 to 19. Granted that's about a 12% increase, but then again it is only 2 more plugins. This is 4, and the 2.33 C2D is besting some Dual G5 2.7ghz figures.

I'm hesitant to guess that the RAM makes a difference -- the song is simply one tone running on a pretty RAM-efficient plugin (almost all Logic plugins are fairly RAM optimized), and my Macbook was giving similar #'s of instances with 512mb RAM as others were with 1-2gb.

If you look on Apple Forums' Logic Pro benchmark thread, you can see that (oddly) benchmarks vary a good deal between users, even on same or slightly different systems. Also, the overall # of sculpture plugins run were pretty similar across all CD systems (Macbook, MBP, iMac), regardless of processor speed and RAM (most cited 15-19 instances, with low numbers not necessarily coming from slower systems).

So the big difference between the 2.16 C2D and 2.33 C2D is somewhat unusual, but taking into account everybody's varying specs, maybe not quite so.

And to the poster who said it'd be hard to use 240 reverb plugins -- that is true, but it wouldn't be hard to have 16 tracks going, with 4-5 plugins on each, with liberal use of Sculpture and Sound Designer (Logic's advanced plugins).

Regardless, I'm happy at Logic Pro's performance. Under everyday use this Macbook doesn't seem a lot faster (slower even, sometime) than my old 1.67ghz G4 Powerbook, but under Logic this Macbook runs over 4 times the amount of plugins than the PB did. Logic Pro is one of Apple's best-optimized programs =)

Any news about others receiving further ADC shipping/price discounts for 17" delays? Have you tried to get any free shipping or $50/100 discount with ADC? I tried and received a $100 discount and free shipping but then was informed that I had to email ADC to confirm. So far the discounts have been withdrawn and nothing new has shown up on my order page in the last few days. It was strange to see my system discounted $100 and then two hours later the discount was gone. Just wondering if there is a different policy for ADC or edu compared to normal ordering.

finally waiting for my computer

Well...I finally did it. It only took me 11 months to make the decision to buy my new MBP. warning! boring long story following. read only if bored.

After they were first announced, I wanted one out of sheer computer lust (I'm a geek...but aren't we all for being here? :p )
I had taken my rage against my faulty wireless network on my poor powerbook G4 (667 mhz...she'll be 5 yo in February) and caused the screen to separate at the bottom L corner of the screen. I didn't realize the screen was open that far and gravity pulled it back a tad more and wham! there it was. Then I realized that applecare ended 1 month before then...just my luck! I have rationalized it as I shouldn't be rewarded for abuse by getting complete repair covereage. Anyway, the screen was working so after I learned how much it would cost to fix, I let it go. That was almost 2 years ago. So I was in lust over the newly announced MBP CD. Then in May, I was nearly forced into buying a new computer because the separation in the screen was getting worse (a part fell out...but the screen was still good). I could no longer easily open and close the screen without further bending the back panel of the screen (the side with the glowing apple). SO now I had a laptop that wasn't very portable since everytime I opened the laptop, I was afraid a breaking point would eventually occur (like when you keep bending metal over and over again at the same place). So I started reading this site again and was drawn into the "wait for merom" fun that was. In the meantime, I knew there would be a way to make a clamp for the corner of the screen to hold the 2 pieces of metal together. Even though the apple store folks advised against it, I went to the container store, to a grocery store, and finally to the hardware store and searched for anything and found the perfect solution. This cable clip thing (sorry, my knowledge of hardware proper names isn't important to me...takes up brain cells from learning my medical knowledge for my residency training and career in medicine). It was the perfect size and with it, I was now able to easily open and close my laptop without the scary creaking and bending. It scratches the metal on the opposing keyboard side but who cares!
THe important thing was that it allowed me to staying the waiting game...and so I waited through until august as the initial wait rumors had listed...then through sept, etc. Then those santa rosa posts made me think I should wait more... but alas I have lost my patience. I made my purchase on thursday and received my tracking number on sunday.
I think the combination of waiting sooo long and paint fumes (spent 3 days painting 6 rooms in my house from 8 am until 11 pm each day) made me decide I had waited long enough.

So now my MBP is in Alaska. There's this presign thing for delivery and while that option would mean that my computer would be on my front door anytime I get home from work, the rain has started to fall in Oregon and a wet computer is no fun...neither is dealing with my paranoia that someone would swipe it from my deck. I'm thinking of begging my cousin to hang at my house the day it's expected for delivery but I think making her drag her 6 month old twins to my home for a delivery that may occur between 8am and 5 pm is too much to ask. My other cousin only has 1 child but also is quite busy. And hey, I waited 11 months...I can wait a few extra days for a day off to pick it up. I'm in the ER this month and I could ditch a shift if I were that desperate (shhh! don't tell my program director!) but I'm actually having fun in the ER. It starts off slowly but picks up quickly!

Oddly enough, my printer, .mac box, and applecare shipment was supposedly shipped first but is stuck at one location in california. So I may end up getting the computer first.

So now I have to decide what to do with this powerbook. She's been good to me...even after being abused and crippled she keeps plugging on.
I doubt it has much resale value since it has the cosmetic defect. Of course, anyone who wants or needs Classic would like it (are there even people like that out there?!?). I gave my very first apple laptop (bought in 1996) to my cousin. It unfortunately died a year later (can't remember why). I gave the black powerbook (bought that one in 1998 or 99) to my mom cause she wanted to use it during her creative memories workshops. She has yet to use it. The battery doesn't keep a charge anymore but it otherwise continues to work well on ac power. I only know this because I boot it up when I go home for vacations. Once I'm fully on my MBP and can get over the separation anxiety, I think I may give this one to my cousin Casey (does that count as a donation that is tax deductable?). His dad (aka my uncle) has an aggressive form of Colon Cancer. he's only 47 (get your colonoscopy if you're over 50 or have a family member with colon cancer!). I think their computer is an old imac. Casey usually comes to my parents house to research for school homework and to type his papers up since they don't have a very good printer. He's almost 15 now and has a younger brother who's 12, and a sister who is only 5. I know if I give him the computer he can at least work on papers at home and then go over to print. Granted, I can't guarantee how long this baby will keep on plugging but I'm not selling it to him so a free computer for a short while is better than nothing right? They're in Hawaii (where I grew up) so getting the computer to him will be a little difficult unless I can get the transition done before my christmas vacation (yea! I don't have to work at christmas time this year!). And then I have to somehow convince the airlines that my backpack is a purse and my 2 carry ons are the computers (the new MBP and the old PB). I suppose I could buy him a padded sleeve and stick the computer into my backpack and ship the powerbook box with the manuals. That would make me a really nice cousin. Ahhh...what to do. I used to babysit him when I was in high school (yikes! that was over 10 years ago!). I taught him how to use the computer when he was 2. I let him play on it before then but i let him turn the thing on and get into games (kid pix primarily). He probably could do it from just watching.

Did you enjoy my ramble? No? well, I gave you a warning.
Hey, maybe after all that typing my MBP is closer to portland!
Nope, still in alaska.

reading these posts now makes me paranoid for all the possible flaws it may have. And since I got the 2.33 with 160 GB drive, I'll have to mail it back...blech. Here's to hoping for a good one! the serial number says it's a week 45 with a production number of 4343.

time to prepare for journal club!

I don't know why, but I loved that post. For some reason though I feel as if I've just taken your whole family history.;)

For what it's worth, my MBP was made the same week as yours and I'm loving it.

What're you reading for journal club? The Sea Urchin Genome paper just came out in Science...should be a good read.:D

I too enjoyed your entry. Put a smile on my face :)

I know you'll enjoy your new machine - you chose wisely too, I might add (the 160 and the 2.33 model) :)

Hey all. Been watching these forums since July. I finally blew the rest of my student loan on a fully blown MBP. I ordered the high end 15" with 3GB RAM and 160GB HDD. Figured if it's gonna last me some 5+ years I better shell out the big bucks now. Spent an extra $99 for the Student ADC, but my MBP ended up at $2539.00 before tax. Heck of a savings if you ask me. Plus I get Leapord when it comes out. Sweet!!!
I placed my order on Thursday at noon, and iSnoop's tracking says it's sitting at a depot in Indianapolis right now. I live in Chicago. I paid the $18 for 2-day shipping, but didn't really expect them to keep their word. I'm praying to the Apple gods for delivery tomorrow. Now I need to figure out what I'm gonna do with this PB of mine.

I didn't buy it new. Bought it in March of this year for $1000 to try out a mac portable before spending 3x more. Had been using the school's PM and had grown accustomed to them. It does everything I need it to, but I never really felt at peace with a previously used machine, especially since I bought it some 4 or 5 months after the 1year AppleCare expired. I'm an audio production major, and I still have an instructor with a TiBook running Pro Tools and Logic Pro. A brand new machine with warranty will keep me at ease. Besides, I think I'm just gonna pass this down to my sister who is just entering college. It'll do her well.
