Macbook Pro shipped today!

Hi everyone!

I've been reading this thread with real interest for a week now. I just sold my iMac G5 and iBook G4 and ordered a stock 2.13 MBP on Friday. I wanted an intel mac that would bring me the best of my iMac and iBook. I love the screen and power of the iMac, but the iBook was so handy and portable. I'm on a budget, but I thought the Macbook wouldn't be enough for me - screen too small and no separate graphics card (I do play one or 2 games). I really couldn't afford the 2.33 MBP, so I opted for the lowest model with glossy screen. I hope I've made the right decision :(

I'll post again with details of hard drive, screen etc when it arrives. Does anyone know how long it takes to ship to the UK with standard shipping?

Thanks to all members for the fantastic reading!

I bet you've made the most sensible decision.. and that it'll suit your needs just right, as you don't sound like an extreme gamer, aperture user or anything of the sort. i.e. So far as CPU goes, 2.16 - 2.33... and the GPU memory difference.. likely won't affect you much at all, I imagine.

It's always common to second guess big purchases though.
But as for second guessing this one you've made.. meh, don't!

You've done well and you'll be happy :)

You know, I'm in the same position. I can kinda afford the 2.33, but not really... Problem is that Logic Pro seems to be very sensitive to the new C2D, and benchmarks show a 15-20% boost with the extra 0.16ghz in CPU speed.

Thx for that. With my Edu discount I only had to put £100 towards it after selling my iMac & iBook ;)

That's a worthwhile speed boost. Have you ordered a MBP yet?

sweet!
we gotta love being edu-able eh :)

by the by, you'll love the lack of a two-machine life I bet - it's less complicated and confusing, as you know you have all your stuff there, with no question of "was this on that machine or this one? damn! where is it??" :p

Looks like I spoke too soon. About an hour after posting this, I got the shipped notification from Apple. If people care, I'll keep the thread updated with progress. I chose the express shipping.

Just received mine-- 15" 2.33/2gb RAM/200gb HD-- MK2035GSS model. Seems great so far.

Hey guys, maybe its just me, but does your trackpad seem to spazz somtimes, meaning not responding, and just plain acting weird?

Mine does this.. on waking from sleep it takes like 3 seconds for the cursor to even show up on the screen even though I'm using the trackpad to wake it up.
I lose the cursor from time to time too, even while I'm using it.

1. Is that a glossy or matte screen?

2. Could you tell us what week it was built (By entering your serial number here: http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html )

3. Is that a 9C60 model screen? (To check, go to Sys Pref > Displays > Color > Open Profile and click the 13th row.)

If it's a matte screen and the uneven screen brightness issue has finally been eliminated, it's a big deal for the macbook pro community.

OK there:
my macbook pro (matte non glossy) was built on production week 44 and the productionnumber is 2322 (within this week.)
the screen is a 9c60 model.
Really, i find the screen amazing so i guess they eliminated the uneven screen brightness issue. believe it or not, but i even find it a bit better than my 20" cinema display ( a bit brighter and sharper...)
there's alink to some screen picts i made (full lightened up) if you guys want to take a look..
http://web.mac.com/goulwen.pele/iWeb/Macbook Pro C2D/MPB C2D SCREEN.html
the only little bad thing is that i have a single dead pixel on the center of the screen, but it is only noticeable on white backgrounds so i don't matter at all. It is fast, but not as much as i thougt for the High end model with a perpendicular recording 1690GB's drive. I used to run on a mac mini core solo with 1.5GBs of ram, booting on a very good 7200rpm drive via firewire and sometimes it look like the macbook pro isn't so quick on response. I'll have to try to boot on the same disk hooked via firewire 800 on the macbook to see what's in that baby's heart.
Anyway this thing is wonderfull. I did notice the problem of the low responding trackpad (1 ou 2 sec before you get the cursor to moove) but i installed mouse zoom and it seems to be gone.
The superdrive is fast and reaaaaally quiet, it is a pleasure!
i'm really dispointed thow that it doesn't come with the same microfibre cloth they offer with the cinema display. that a little plus they could include i think for a pricey toy like that!...
and to end the words, i would say it's a wonderfull experience, riding that mac while Jacky Green sings his Marigold song ... my new mac then reaches the "american myth"! how great!

Oh and please forgive me my unconventional english: i'm still a french guy who's in love with the US ;)
other first picts still there:

Wow. Would you mind elaborating and providing a link to where you learned this? Thanks. :)

Hey yours really does seem better.

Can you do us all a favor and snap a picture of your screen up closer with your lens perpendicular to the screen, and then snap another one with your lens parallel to the wrist rest?

It seems like yours have very good viewing angles.

Hi enjoyapple. I'm glad you're enjoying your new MBP.

Would you also mind taking a picture of your MacBook Pro's screen showing one single solid color, preferably light grey, in the dark? I know that's a lot to ask. :D

Thanks.

Obviously you're not a golfer.
1. Any uneven brightness issues?

2. Could you tell us what week it was built (By entering your serial number here: http://www.chipmunk.nl/klantenservice/applemodel.html )

3. Is that a 9C60 model screen? (To check, go to Sys Pref > Displays > Color > Open Profile and click the 13th row.)

1. i would say none to extremely minor - i have it on a neutral gray background right now and the corners are a tinyest bit dimmer but nothing i have not seen on every opther laptop. there is NO banding, wide dim areas, etc.. to me it looks as good as any laptop screen i have ever seen. it also has not yet been on for a straight hour yet (takes time to warm up - at least 30 minutes) so i suspecty it will only look better in a couple of hours.

2. week 45

3. it is a 9C60

whooops. i made a mistake, got confused with my cinema display specifications.. my MBP screen is a 9C60, not a 0000921D..
sorry about that..

This is starting to get me intrigued.

Are you guys SURE the model number outlined in the colour profile is actually the exact screen it is using in the machine?

This just occured to me because I looked at the sRGB and other profiles and found that they do not even have that column. For all we know the file is statically created when Apple mastered the OS X installation CD and all MBPs get the same number regardless of the actual panel.

Yeah, but do you really need 240 instances of a reverb plug-in vs. 200?
It may be 15-20% more, but I'd like to see you max out the 2.16's potential.
We're talking a TON of plug-ins/virtual instruments.
What machine would you be coming from? If, for instance, you're on a single G5, the 2.16ghz C2D will whomp it. I find that the CPU meter in Reason on my MBP 2.16ghz C2D is just a hair lower on the demo song (as in either the same bar or one bar less) compared to a dual 2.0 G5 with the same amount of RAM.
