WAHOOO!!!
Ordered on Oct. 13th and shipped today. gotta love the edu channels. It left Shanghi today :) Can't wait!!!!!

wow, does ordering with edu discount usually have this kind of delay? I ordered a 2.33/15in/160gb on October 28th from an independant dealer and the sales rep said that i would most likely come in this past week, and it has not arrived yet so I have become concerned after hearing stories of people who ordered about a week after I did and have already revieved theirs.

I'll eat my hat if you actually speak to a MacBook Pro engineer. Do you think they just connect anybody with a complaint to those people?

If you call AppleCare about issues with a new product, they'll usually direct your call to a product specialist, many of whom have direct access to the engineering teams, as stated to me by various product specialists I've spoken to. In fact, AppleCare actively attempts to "capture" new products that are defective, so they could attempt to iron out the issues. Whether they'll actually do anything with these particular screen issues, no one knows.

Thank you for that akadmon. You've convinced me to return my MBP (no problems, but enough issues to make me nervous about it that I no longer trust it). I'll be returning it and won't be buying an Apple notebook again until I hear that these things have been worked out.

If it means I eat the 10% restocking fee, so be it, although I imagine I could argue that even the lesser degree of screen brightness in my bottom corner at certain viewing angles is enough that I can say I can't deal with it.

Too bad too, it seems like a pretty nice machine overall, but you've posted so many different problems now that it seems like it's almost guaranteed that something is going to pop up, and I don't want the hassle.

I really miss tone of voice in forum postings. Please tell me the above is meant to be sarcasm. Please?

Not really, no. There's enough stuff being documented in akadmon's thread (check it out if you don't believe me) that it makes me really nervous about it. And even though I'm not having the severe screen problems now, I'm definitely nervous now that perhaps it could get worse (or if it doesn't, it sounds like a host of other things could be going on too).

I initially was dismissive of it, but the more he has posted, and the more all these things are coming up, the more it makes me nervous about having it as a machine.

I might change my mind, I don't know (I've got until November 19th to return it).

To those of you ordering, consider not paying for upgraded shipping.

Mine shipped on Wednesday Nov 8 with a expected delivery date of Tuesday, Nov 14th, however to my surprise, it was delivered yesterday Nov 10th!

I got the glossy and it is very sweet!!!

When I first got my current machine, the 1.25 AlPowerBook, I had the white spots problem that a lot of people had (I'm sure some here still remember it). It was a huge issue and a lot of people were returning their machines, like you are. I waited a few months (still with my machine) until I read about people that were getting new ones shipped without the problem, and then called mine into AppleCare. They sent me the overnight box and in a few days I had one, brand new, perfect, LCD.

I'd say, if you need the machine, you need the machine. I have confidence that Apple will fix the problems. Let them make the change in LCD manufacturers if they have to, and then submit for AppleCare. But don't get worried about a few people on a forum having problems and potential future issues you could have. If everyone who had a perfect one posted as well, I'm sure they'd GREATLY outnumber those people with problems who are apt to be louder about their complaints.

Well, that's something that's good to know, that if my machine did develop these problems, I could get AppleCare to replace/fix the faulty parts. I'll definitely think about that.

Took the words out of my mouth. Think of how many units Apple has sold worldwide. The only people posting on forums are the truely fanatic and the ones with problems. If you're happy about something, it's typically rare to come online and tell everyone you're happy with it.

I remember a couple weeks ago how excited you were about the machine. Every electronic, complex product will have some issues with it and the ones most displeased will speak up. If you're that worried, get Applecare. You'll have 3 years to not worry about some display problem that may never happen. Don't get rid of the machine and never buy "an Apple notebook again until [you] hear that these things have been worked out."

Besides, the thread to which you refer involves hypothetical issues about the 17" line that has yet to be released based on comparing CD 17"ers to the C2D 15" line. There may be some good points there, but hardly the most credible source.

The thread I was referring to primarily is akadmon's thread, where he has been documenting all of the different issues and discussion threads people are reporting about their new C2D MBP's.

I will definitely think about it though, I'm still just kind of concerned about the volume of issues being reported so quickly (I'm trying to think back to when the CD MBP came out, and most of the issues I remember reading about were more focused things, like just the heat problems, etc.).

The screen quality issues seem much more widespread, and the general consensus seems to be that across the board Apple is using lower quality LCD's, which is what concerns me. Mine hasn't been as bad as what others have posted, but it makes me wonder if it will get worse over time, and what I could do about it (if Apple doesn't consider uneven brightness to be a defect)..... especially if Apple isn't going to change this, my concern would be that there wouldn't be anything I could do long term, as there would be nothing to fix or replace it with.

I guess my main point was to take every complaint you read here with a grain of salt. I mean, I read one post where someone was returning his because his space bar squeaked slightly (not trying to offend anyone, but I would hate to be that Apple store employee that day). I, for one, am very happy with my glossy display, I see no uneven brightness and it is literally one of the most beautiful displays I have ever seen. Bottom line, decide for yourself what is or is not acceptable. I swear, the DSM V is going to have to have an entry for a complex in which you spend $3000 on a product then develop nervous ticks trying to find minute flaws in what clearly should be a flawless machine. Hell, this forum made me a bit nervous about opening that FedEx box, but my therapist says I should be fine.

Although, my spacebar does squeak a little...anyone else having this problem?;)

Hello, Zadillo! You've mentioned the C2D MBP QC thread I started (seems like I'm the only one contributing to it -- not my original intent). Please believe me -- I don't have an agenda against Apple and don't want to dissuade anyone from buying a MBP, nor do I want to persuade someone like you, who has darn any issues with their new MBP, that they have made a bad choice. Do enjoy your MBP! If some problem comes up down the road, I am sure Apple, which from all appearance seems to be quite an accommodating bunch of folks, will address it adequately. I may not get a MBP after all, but I am definitely getting a Mac (prolly the NOT Made in China Mac Pro):

hm, i posted this in a separate thread but it seems that it'd be a bit more appropriate here:

what's the difference between the 120gb and 160gb HDD's? Are all 120gb's LMR and 160gb's PMR? What type of speed increase does this translate to?

I was reading http://www.barefeats.com/mbcd6.html -- this review, and in it it stated that PMR did not drastically help out HDD speeds, in fact the 7200rpm 100gb HDD was significantly faster. Just curious to see the difference PMR actually makes, and hopefully if 120gig hdd's are PMR too so I can save $80 and spend it on an external HDD =)

As far as I can keep up with from reading this thread, all 160s are PMR, and 120s are mixed between PMR and LMR.

What're you, nuts? A few isolated people have "issues," of which you're having none, and you're returning it "just in case?"

Dude, you'd better start living the "simple" life of the Amish, and stay away from any technical/electronic/21st century products, because someone will have tales to tell about "issues!"

Hopefully you're just "pulling his chain," but you did make a subsequent statement that your post wasn't meant sarcastically .........

edit: ok, you got me! After reading your post in another thread, I see that you are being sarcastic! Well done!

Yeah, my spacebar squeaks a little bit, too. The only real nit on what otherwise seems to be an exceptional piece of computing equipment.

Zadillo's post has me thinking I probably ought to take back the Honda Civic I bought a couple months ago. Even though it's been perfect for me, I've read on the forums of some people who've had a few problems. Better safe than sorry, right?!

For those who might not be able to tell - that was a sarcastic joke. And no ill will towards Zadillo. I just don't get your logic, is all.

Just to update, I have gone ahead and changed my mind and decided to keep it for the time being.

Zadillo, my bet is that your new machine will give you many, many hours of outstanding computing experience! Me thinks you made a wise choice. ;-)

Me, I'm impressed enough with mine that I'm now considering moving my desktop photography workflow (currently running on a Dell) to the MBP - something I hadn't considered when I ordered it. I've been planning on buying a Mac Pro next spring to do that - still the plan - but this MPB brings enough horsepower that I'm thinking it'll be better than the Dell in the interim.

What if they change the LCD 4 months into the run? AppleCare would have expired then! Or will they do it under warranty (not Applecare)?

AppleCare IS the warranty. You have 90 days of telephone support ("help me use my computer") but you get a year included of hardware warranty service. They both extend to 3 years if you buy the extended AppleCare protection plan.
