People whose MBPs have shipped- can you please post your order date? I ordered on the 7th at 5:30 PM Eastern Time, 2:30 Pacific-- and it still has yet to ship. I was quoted 1-3 days until it ships when I ordered, and we're clearly past that.

Thanks,
-Matt

hmmmmm..

please explain.. expand.. and did you get your $$$ back?

iloveyou

No, I did not. Apple is sending me a box to pick up the computer Monday. They said 5-10 days for the repair. I have to have a computer for work so I had to buy a new one. I guess I will sell the CD when I get it back. I had debated a time back to buy a backup in case this happened like a refurb MacBook but had hoped this wouldn't have happened. Only had about an hour on this one but it seems to work very well.

Looks like I spoke too soon. About an hour after posting this, I got the shipped notification from Apple. If people care, I'll keep the thread updated with progress. I chose the express shipping.

I'm currently on my second MBP C2D (15-inch, 2.16, matte), after replacing the first one that had an unevenly lit display, which the second one also has. So I'm going to ask for a full refund from Apple.

The latter machine has a 00009C60 model display, and I suspect the first one has one, too.

On both machines, the left side of the display is a few levels brighter than the right side. When working with precise colors as my work requires, this drives me completely insane.

Based on store models I've seen and comments on Apple's support forums, I suspect most, if not all 15" MBPs have this issue to some extent. IMHO, those who claim they have "perfect" MBP displays are either not looking close enough or being picky enough. (I think for a $2000 machine targeted towards professionals, many of whom work in design, an evenly-lit display isn't too much to ask for.) I have not seen one picture of a "perfect" evenly-lit MBP display (showing one solid color) yet on the web. I think this issue affects both matte and glossy displays, as the backlight lamp (the culprit) is not related to coating or model of the LCD panel.

This issue is easy to see if you set your entire display to light grey. Either there will be some blotchiness, or in my case, one side of the display will be brighter than the other.

I'll be waiting a while before trying my luck with another MBP, though I don't think Apple will be fixing this anytime soon. According to their support staff and "Mac Geniuses", these displays are all "within spec" (their new favorite line). There clearly isn't a rush to improve on what's currently shipping, and that's really disappointing. I'm all for Apple's newfound popularity, but trading in quality control for volume is unacceptable.

The thing is, everything else about these new C2D MBPs is perfect. They're not hot, they have non-warped lids, and the fit and finish is awesome. But the crappy displays are a deal-breaker for me, and it's really frustrating not to be able to take my work with me for the foreseeable future.

I'm still not totally convinced it's an issue of the backlighting itself not being even (I've got two other LCD's, a Dell 2005fpw and a Samsung 23" LCD HDTV), and both of those have uneven backlighting, and it is very obvious when viewing dark scenes especially because you can see the backlight bleeding clearly in various areas of the screen.

With my C2D MBP (matte)0, dark scenes are perfectly evenly lit and blacks are actually black.

And when I do have a full solid grey or white, I can see the right side a shade darker, but only at certain viewing angles. If I change my viewing angle to be looking at the bottom right-hand corner straight on, it is just as bright as any other part of the screen. Again, if the lighting itself was uneven, it seems like that area of the screen should always be dark regardless of viewing angle.

Although I'll admit, the darkness I saw is much more subtle than what some people have posted in pictures, where whole areas of the screen just look darker overall, not just with a solid color but with anything.

You have a point. I can see the issue originating from the panel itself, rather than the backlight lamp. At this point, I'm on the fence about returning my second MBP now. It really is a perfect machine (no dead pixels, even). It's just the uneven screen brightness issue that's really bothering me.

The FedEx man is coming on Mon. to pick up my MBP. I guess I have until then to decide.

For me, I dont even see any uneven lighting right now but the screen is a little bit grainy, like it has a filter on it. I noticed this on the older MBPs too though and my powerbook also had this but not as much, Ive put my 20" samsung aside for the weekend so Ill be sitting in front of my MBP to really try out the screen. :p

That is exactly the way i see my glossy c2d. Everything is even except when i have a white or grey background I start to notice the right a bit darker than the left, but a change of my viewing angle fixes that. So in my case i don't think it warrants really talking to Apple about.

You owe it to yourself and everyone here to talk to Apple if it is indeed noticeable. Else for the next revision someone will figure "Hey, nobody talked to us about these cheaper screens we have been using. Let's keep using them."

I agree. That's exactly what I'm going to do, and I suggest everyone do the same. Apple's resurgence is great and all, but the QC of their products will only go downhill from here unless people start speaking up. A crappy display is okay for a $499 Dell notebook, but not for a $2000+ machine targeted towards professionals like me who need a color-precise display.

Believe me that I will be raising a *********. I'm calling AppleCare to speak to their MBP specialists/engineers, as well as Apple's Cupertino headquarters to speak to their public relations representatives. I wouldn't call myself an Apple fanboy, but as someone who's been using their computers for so long, shipping computers that all have a crappy display in some form is simply unacceptable.

Right on!

So as not to repeat myself, I've voiced my concern about the quality of Apple LCDs in another thread:

I think that Apple is not going to do much in terms of improving the quality of its LCD displays until they release Leopard which will have resolution independence.

Well, I assure you I would if i thought there was a big problem with it.. I don't believe my particular issue is the same as others are discussing as if i shift my viewing angle, I am able to see it in uniform brightness. If this is the same issue, let me know and i will certainly call and complain, but i was not sure if the others experiencing the brighness issue can shift the viewing angle and solve their problem.

Thank you for that akadmon. You've convinced me to return my MBP (no problems, but enough issues to make me nervous about it that I no longer trust it). I'll be returning it and won't be buying an Apple notebook again until I hear that these things have been worked out.

If it means I eat the 10% restocking fee, so be it, although I imagine I could argue that even the lesser degree of screen brightness in my bottom corner at certain viewing angles is enough that I can say I can't deal with it.

Too bad too, it seems like a pretty nice machine overall, but you've posted so many different problems now that it seems like it's almost guaranteed that something is going to pop up, and I don't want the hassle.

I'll eat my hat if you actually speak to a MacBook Pro engineer. Do you think they just connect anybody with a complaint to those people?

I think it's pretty obvious he meant speaking to someone who specifically knew about the MBP, not specifically an engineer who designs them.

Yeesh.
