Along with the new vents, Apple also went the extra mile to make sure that when you look into the wents you will only see black components. Check the picture below:

Another thing I found was that there are three manufacturers of the displays; AU Optronics, Chi Mei Optoelectronics, and Samsung. That might explain why some people don't seem any problems with non-uniformed brightness, while others complain that the right side is somewhat darker than the left.

... Monolingual sounds like a great program. But the readme mentions the possibility of screwing up certain applications like Adobe Acrobat if you remove languages. Did you have any problems like that? I use acrobat 7 pro, CS2, etc. and i don't want to have to re-install them if i can help it. :)

I used monolingual and got rid of everything but english, I use acrobat(6) a lot and have had no problems. I dont do anything advanced with acrobat though - just use it to type notes onto pdf lecture handouts.

 why would you do that to your MBP!!! I'd never do stuff like that!

Any way of finding out which is which by going by the model#? I swear by Samsung but have never heard of AU Opt or Chi Mei.

Oh god.. Chi Mei sounds like a very cheap brand. It is a brand that is so very... east Asian sounding. How can you tell which panel you got in your MBP without stripping it apart?

Register with your current key I think. Would you mind elaborating on why you switched to Glossy? I have the same PB you just left behind from 3 years ago.

Fancied a change. I had a close look at some glossy screens in an Applestore and although the matte screens were much better than my old PB, I preferred the glossy. It is amazingly unreflective. I also notice it is much smoother than my friend's Macbook.

Another question for fellow MBP C2D owners: I can hear a gentle fan on all the time on the left side near the power connector. Sounds like a slowly spinning CD. I didn't expect this. It comes on the moment it wakes up. I haven't done anything to make it get faster yet but I'm finding the sound quite irritating as it is. Nothing has got warm yet either.

Is the constant fan noise normal?

It depends on the temperature in the MBP. Is it hot in the store?

Hey guys. Would just like to say I gt my new Macbook Pro yesterday (in UK), and I can say it is amazing. This thing is soooo cool- and I mean literally! Doesnt get hot at all. And the glossy screen is out of this world. I spent a good 10 mins just staring at the desktop cos it looks so good!! Anyways hope you guys who are waiting get yours soon. I switched from wndows and it looks like a good move.

P.S no dead pixels and screen brightness is even. And a Hitachi 120gb Hard drive.

p.s.s. Does anyone have any info regarding the HE warranty in the UK? i ordered it through Uni, and was told I get a free 3 year warranty- the box came with the standard 1 year paper??

Whereas the fact that they're manufactured in China fills you with confidence about the build quality?

Fujitsu or Hitachi

Hey,

Does any one know which are the models that come with the Fijitsu or the Hitachi HD? I ordered a 2.33 with a 160 G Hd. And why is it that the Fujistu have such a bad image among users?
Thanks

What do you mean by your glossy screen is "much smoother than my friend's Macbook." What does "smoother" mean? Can you rephrase that for us please? I'm still undecided about this Matt vs. Glossy controversy.

F.A.Q for smcFanControl 1.22

smcFanControl 1.22 Download Page

Hot off the press. Just released Thursday. Best way to take maximum control of your fans. But it won't let you shut them down nor lower their RPM minimum which is 2k on the new C2D MBP formerly only 1k on the old CD MBP. Let us know if you can figure out a way to make it help your noise problem. Is there any settings in the Energy Saver System Preference that might turn that fan off more often? Perhaps by turning ON the right fan so BOTH run minimum 2k the sound might be less bothersome? Just guessing out loud. ;)

Or just turn on iTunes with some soothing sound at low volume. :)

Be happy. You are among the most elite of all elite on the planet right now. :) Congrats.

Fujitsu Is Getting Hammered Because Their 120's Are Old LMR Hitachi 120's Are New PMR

Hey,

Does any one know which are the models that come with the Fijitsu or the Hitachi HD? I ordered a 2.33 with a 160 G Hd. And why is it that the Fujistu have such a bad image among users?

Luciano
160's are all Hitachi PMRs. Fujitsu is only supplying some of the 120 LMRs. Hitachi 120 PMRs are also in that mix. The 200s are exclusively Toshiba PMR. Only reason Fujitsu is getting hammered is because those 120's are the old LMR tech while the Hitachi 120's are all the new PRM.
The stack of dead Fujitsu hard drives we have in the office would disagree with you on that one.
Thank you caveman. My bad. Aparently Fujitsu aren't very reliable drives. Someone else here posted earlier they had experience that they were. I would vote against getting any LMR drive by ordering a 160 or 200 upgrade with your MBP.

If you want the details, there are tons of links to the models during our earlier discussion about them. Just do a search this thread at top of this page for those brand names and you will find all that way back in the teen hundreds I think.

I'm curious as to why you would say that? Based on the specs, the CMO product is superior to either AUO or Samsung.

Chi Mei Optoelectronics
Model Name N154C1
Screen 15.4"(Wide)
Resolution(H x V) 1440x900
Support Color 262K

Power Consumption(w/o Inv) 5
Outlines(W x H x D mm) 344x 222x6
Weight(g) 500
Response Time (ms) 25
Electrical Interface LVDS

Samsung
SIZE 15.4"
RESOLUTION WXGA+
NUMBER OF PIXELS 1,440 x 900
ACTIVE AREA(mm²) 331.6 x 207.2
PIXEL PITCH(mm) 0.259
NUMBER OF COLORS 262K
Color Gamut(%) 45
CONTRAST RATIO 500:1
BRIGHTNESS(cd/m²) 300
RESPONSE TIME(ms at 25 °C) 25
VIEWING ANGLE(U/D/L/R) 50/50/65/65
INTERFACE LVDS(2ch)
OUTLINE DIMENSION(mm) 344.0 x 222.0 x 6.5
WEIGHT(g) 520
PRODUCTION Mass Production

AUO seems like a new addition since I don't think it was used in the original MBPs, but this would be the model Apple's likely using:

AUO
Model B154PW01
Resolution (pixel) WXGA+ (1440 x 900)
Aspect Ratio 16 : 10
Active Area (mm) 331.5 x 207.2
Pixel Pitch (mm) 0.23025
Mode TN
Number of Colors 262K
Color Saturation (NTSC%) 45
View Angle (H/V) 140 / 120
Brightness (cd/m²) (5 points average) 300
Contrast Ratio 400 : 1
Response Time (ms) (at 25°C) 16
Power Consumption (W) 6.5
Interface 2ch LVDS
Supply Voltage (V) 3.3
Backlight 1 CCFL
Outline Dimensions (mm) 344.0 x 222.0 x 5.8
Weight (g) 510
Production Now

Clearly from the specs, the CMO product is lightest, and the most power efficient. It also has wider viewing angles than the Samsung. The only model with an advantage over the CMO is the AUO one which has a lower 16ms response time vs. 25ms for Samsung and CMO, but the AMO product sacrifices contrast ratio, only 400:1 compared to 500:1 for the others, and consumes 30% more power. I'm looking to get a new C2D MBP and personally I'm hoping to get a CMO screen.

The only way I know of to get information on the screen is to go SysPref/Displays/Color/Color LCD/Open profile/#13 "mmod". If someone can decode the manufacturer's ID number and the part number that would actually say what the information their means. Supposedly model 00009C56 is made by Samsung, but that's all I know.

If these specs are correct, the pixel pitch is different for the Samsung and AUO (not listed for the Chi Mei), but that can certainly impact the quality of the display.

And is it possible that the AUO with its wider viewing angles is the glossy display? Sorry, out of my leage on this. Perhaps others with more knowledge of displays can advise.

Also, it will be interesting to see what the C2D 17" MBPs arrive wearing.

I suppose the slightly bigger active area of the Samsung screen may be partially responsible for the increased pixel pitch.

For the glossy and matte, I thought those were only coatings applied to the surface of the screen while the screen itself is the same. So I'm not sure that a screen manfacturer necessarily indicates which is glossy and which is matte. The AUO and CMO screen have the same wider viewing angles, it's just the Samsung screen which is narrower. Sadly, I'm under the impression that the Samsung screens are the most common.

I wonder if Apple has released XP driver support for the LCDs yet? In XP, under display properties if XP properly recognizes the LCD with the correct driver, it'll actually say the full model name. But I think the LCDs still only read as Default Monitor right now in Boot Camp.

MBP glossy screen looks flatter from the side. The MB screen looked a bit ripply. Maybe I'm making the difference sound greater than it is.

Regarding the fans, smcfancontrol says that both fans are at 2k, all the time. Do these fans ever stop on a MBP? The whole left side of my MBP vibrates very gently.

Also I noticed that when I increase the minimum speed of fan #2, the other fan is unaffected. When I increase the minimum speed of fan #1, both fans increase. Is this normal? Unlike fan #1, fan #2 is undetectable at 2k.

2000rpm is the minimum fan speed. The fans never turn off or go slower than that. I'm not sure if the left side of your MBP vibrating is normal though; I haven't really detected that on mine.

Personally I've found them to be almost undetectable at 2000rpm, so perhaps it does indicate a problem if you can notice them.

That's interesting about the fanspeeds apparently being tied together. Not sure how or why that would be the case.

I haven't received my MPB yet, but it might be possible to find the manufacturer and modelid by using Powerstrip through Boot camp and Windows.

Just right-click on the powerstrip icon in the systray, select options, and monitor information. Post your results/screenshots here please.

It's too bad you can't find out what screen the MBP has before you actually open it since that'd probably be too late. Although I suppose having them put the LCD model number on the box may be asking too much.

Arrived!

Finally typing this on my new 15"/2.33Ghz/2GB/160GB (Hitachi PMR)/Glossy C2D MBP that arrived a couple hours ago. Took just under an hour to transfer everything from my old 1.33Ghz G4 PB during which the MBP got slightly warm, but it has cooled down again quickly. I see no uneven brightness issues and could not detect any dead pixels using http://jasonfarrell.com/misc/deadpixeltest.php.

So far I'm very happy with everything...good luck to everyone still waiting! (Esp the 17"ers...)
