Finally typing this on my new 15"/2.33Ghz/2GB/160GB (Hitachi PMR)/Glossy C2D MBP that arrived a couple hours ago. Took just under an hour to transfer everything from my old 1.33Ghz G4 PB during which the MBP got slightly warm, but it has cooled down again quickly. I see no uneven brightness issues and could not detect any dead pixels using http://jasonfarrell.com/misc/deadpixeltest.php.

So far I'm very happy with everything...good luck to everyone still waiting! (Esp the 17"ers...)
Could you go to go System Preferences/Displays/Color/Color LCD/Open profile/ double click on #13 "mmod" and post the information that you see there? That's supposed to tell you what model LCD you have although I'm not quite sure how to decode the information. Still a number like 00009C62 will tell what moniter patch they're up to. I believe the original MBPs ranged at least from 00009C56 to 00009C62.

Obviously you're not a golfer.
tracking my MBP's progress to rhode island for anyone who wants a comparison:

15"C2D/160GB/2GB/Matte

-ordered tuesday nov 7th at 2PM EST(USA)
-ship notice sent thursday nov 9 at 5AM EST

FEDEX tracking currently showing Nov 9 3:42PM - Left Origin - Shanghai

i spoke to fedex and she told me all was normal and even tho the package appears to have not moved in 30 hours it is in transit and the tracking should reflect it being in the USA tonight sometime. she also said that it will be here Wednesday at the latest (which is the scheduled delivery time) but its very possible it will be here monday if customs goes smoothly.

the one thing i am a tad irked about is that the package according to apple shows a delivery of wednesday, which is 4 business days instead of the 2-3 business days that i paid for (which i know may be unnecessary but it was worth $15 to me to feel like its gonna get here faster). hopefully it will be irrelevant and it will get here monday/tuesday but if not ill be sure to get that refunded.

If that tells you anything.

Mine did the same thing...for more than a day it appeared to be stuck in China, I was getting worried until the next update had it already through AK on it's way to IN. FWIW, I did not pay for the shipping after hearing on this forum it probably wouldn't do much...mine shipped after 8pm on the 7th, got here this morning at 10am EST. If yours is not any faster, be sure to get your money back.:)

An early delivery from Shanghai

Hi everyone. Just got my new C2D MacBook Pro today. I was wondering if these new machines need the SMC firmware updated to 1.2f10 in order to run bootcamp, just like the old macbook pro. The SMC version that is currently on my new machine is 1.12f5. Thank you all in advance.

MBP just arrived. 2.33 15". 7 days from order to delivery. Very nice. I am very please so far. I was skeptical about the flat keyboard but I actually like it and am looking forward to using it.

This is my second mac in a month. You can officially call me a convert now :)

After waiting for what seemed like forever, I have purchased my first Mac. The new C2D Macbook Pro. I went on vacation, and when I got back I was pleasantly surprised to see the updated MacBook Pros were finally released. I called my local Apple Store and they had it in stock. They held a 15.4" Glossy for me, so I stopped on my way home to get it. I've had it for a little over a week now and I LOVE it. I've had no problems whatsoever(backlighting, heat, noise, etc.).

Call AppleCare To Get Fan #1 Replaced

MBP glossy screen looks flatter from the side. The MB screen looked a bit ripply. Maybe I'm making the difference sound greater than it is.

Regarding the fans, smcfancontrol says that both fans are at 2k, all the time. Do these fans ever stop on a MBP? The whole left side of my MBP vibrates very gently.

Also I noticed that when I increase the minimum speed of fan #2, the other fan is unaffected. When I increase the minimum speed of fan #1, both fans increase. Is this normal? Unlike fan #1, fan #2 is undetectable at 2k.
In that case you have a bad ball bearing in fan #1 and should call AppleCare for a Fan #1 Replacement arrangement.

I'm still undecided about this Matt vs. Glossy controversy.

I have the same PowerBook as you and the other guy have-- the 1.25ghz 15" PB G4 Aluminum. Great machine. I just ordered the 15" 2.33 C2D with 2gb RAM and 200gb Hard Drive. I decided to go with the Matte screen. I often lay on my couch using the machine, and with a window behind me, I was afraid the sun would make it very hard to use my computer.

I did spend (this is not a joke) 3 hours in the Apple Store 5th Avenue comparing the two. It's a very hard thing to objectively say one is better. And unfortunately, they wouldn't let me take a glossy one outside the store into the sun for a few minutes to try out the screen ;)

I'm currently on my second MBP C2D (15-inch, 2.16, matte), after replacing the first one that had an unevenly lit display, which the second one also has. So I'm going to ask for a full refund from Apple.

The latter machine has a 00009C60 model display, and I suspect the first one has one, too.

On both machines, the left side of the display is a few levels brighter than the right side. When working with precise colors as my work requires, this drives me completely insane.

Based on store models I've seen and comments on Apple's support forums, I suspect most, if not all 15" MBPs have this issue to some extent. IMHO, those who claim they have "perfect" MBP displays are either not looking close enough or being picky enough. (I think for a $2000 machine targeted towards professionals, many of whom work in design, an evenly-lit display isn't too much to ask for.) I have not seen one picture of a "perfect" evenly-lit MBP display (showing one solid color) yet on the web. I think this issue affects both matte and glossy displays, as the backlight lamp (the culprit) is not related to coating or model of the LCD panel.

This issue is easy to see if you set your entire display to light grey. Either there will be some blotchiness, or in my case, one side of the display will be brighter than the other.

I'll be waiting a while before trying my luck with another MBP, though I don't think Apple will be fixing this anytime soon. According to their support staff and "Mac Geniuses", these displays are all "within spec" (their new favorite line). There clearly isn't a rush to improve on what's currently shipping, and that's really disappointing. I'm all for Apple's newfound popularity, but trading in quality control for volume is unacceptable.

The thing is, everything else about these new C2D MBPs is perfect. They're not hot, they have non-warped lids, and the fit and finish is awesome. But the crappy displays are a deal-breaker for me, and it's really frustrating not to be able to take my work with me for the foreseeable future.

I feel the same way on this.

It is very frustrating, they are perfect in every other aspect except the display. Still I have owned Thinkpads with even funkier displays that costs more money so I guess I will just figure out how to work around it.

update on my MBP:

now its in Alaska as of 1PM nov 10. its showing expected delivery of Tuesday nov 14 by 10:30AM, whereas before it showed nothing.

me = preparing to be happy

Shecky,

I guess I'm on the same plane as you are. My scheduled date of delivery is the same as yours and our MBPs left Shanghai and arrived in Alaska together. Somehow I'm hoping for Monday rather than Tuesday but who knows.

Please take some photos of your screen if they are better. I'm curious if the delays are caused by Apple changing in a new panel.
