Wackybit: Same situation down here in Africa, but not as prolific cuz very few can afford notebooks let alone Apple

EDIT: sorry for hijacking thread, will stop now

Is there any distortion or a blown speaker sound from the right speaker. The reason I ask this is because it was a problem on the previous model. Contrary to some here that say the problem was fixed months ago, indeed the problem was still occurring in new Core Duo MPBs as recently as three weeks ago.

I noticed earlier in the thread that pictures were posted of the display and some comment was made about the uneveness appearance of the display. How would you say the backlight distribution is on the new Core 2 MBP?

Can you select what applications & files to move?

I'm wondering the same thing. Can you be selective about which apps are moved and what if you don't want to transfer any system settings? Also, Is there any disadvantage to skipping migration on initial startup and running it at a later time?

I don't recall an option to selectively choose what was migrated, but I wasn't looking for that either, so I'm not sure.

I don't know if the migration can be done later (you could certainly hook up your old MB via firewire target disk mode and just copy apps over, etc.).

I talked to the people at Tysons earlier this morning, and they said nothing was in yet, but they expected them "soon". I tried to pin them down if anything would be available tomorrow or Saturday, but they couldn't tell me.

zadillo: call tysons and ask to be put "on the list" They haven't had any come in yet, but they are taking names.

BTW: I called PC, clarendon, tysons, bethesda 1 and bethesda 2 (yes, there are two)

I havent tried columbia yet, but I can't go there at the moment anyways.

Hello you all - new user here.

I'm about to buy me a 2.33 C2D 15" - It's my very first mac and I just have two quick questions.

1) Will the wirelesscard in the the macboob pro C2D work with my Linksys WRT54G router (only WEP incrypted) and get me online without problems?

2) I have been recommended the Macbook pro cause I needed a very quiet/silent laptop for typing in class and in extremly quiet places. I have seen reviews claiming that you only can hear any noice from the machine if you lay your ear down on the keyboard. This sounds nice and brings me to my last question: Someone mentioned that getting the 160GB disk and not 120 would make it even more silent - is this something that I should consider?

Thanks a lot, i hope you will answer soon as I have my finger on the trigger. :)

I can't remember if you can select which apps to move, but you can definitely choose not to transfer any system settings. The initial choices are applications, users, settings and "other files"--you can disable copying of any or all of those, and you can also choose which users to migrate.

You can run the migration assistant at any time, but it makes more sense to copy your old user account across on initial boot rather than after weeks of setting the new account up. The same goes for applications and settings, of course; I'm not sure if it's smart enough to keep a newer version of an application that already exists on the target machine.

I can kinda answer this one. I had one of the Core Duo versions of the MBP and it worked just fine with my D-Link router. I would suspect the same would hold true for the WRT54G. That is a very common router and the wireless built into the MBP's is standards compliant to my knowledge.

In other words, you don't need to buy an AirPort base station. :)

HTH!

Awesome, thanks for the advice. I'm now on their list. The guy did mention to me that I should still check in with them anyway because they will begin selling them as soon as they get them in (i.e. they aren't going to hold laptops just for the people on their list to call).

He also said they do expect them in by "the end of the week", which means either Friday or Saturday to me.

Tilting angle of display - seems changed!!!

Hey,

awesome!!! If That information is correct, one of my major complaints about the first generation MBPs would have been taken care of.

As stated in this manual, the max. opening angle should be 135° just like it was on the Powerbooks, I just measured that on this machine (PB G4) here! 135°.
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/MacBookPro_15and17-inch_Core2Duo_UserGuide.pdf

In this users guide posted by Apple in February the opening angle was described as 120° max!!! haha
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/MacBook_Pro_Users_Guide.pdf

Please go and compare first gen. MBP to the new ones or just measure, if it's 135° I'd love it even more!!!

Wow that is amazing... The limited angle with the MBP's bothered me too, hope this is correct.

Ram

So I understand that the RAM has to be the same spec if you add the additional RAM yourself (to the lowend MBP to make it 2gigs). But what does that mean exactly? Won't it only take one specific spec of RAM? i.e. making the only variables of the RAM that could fit 1) the amount of RAM on the module and 2) the Name Brand?

So I'm confused.

802.11n? Yes? No? We don't know yet?

Card is 802.11n.

OS X does not have "n" drivers, only "g"

XP with D-Link Driver will allow "n" usage.

So in summary....sort of....not in OS X, yes in XP.

zadillo: interesting, they said they should be getting more tomorrow to me, but I doubt they actually know. Tysons definitely thought tomorrow was the day, as did montgomery maul. I got my fingers crossed for a 2.33 glossy.

Yes, the WRT54G and the WRX series work great with the Macbook and Macbook Pro. I have used all of the above...

For #2, I think the Mackbook and Macbook Pro are very quiet expecially if you leave out a CD/DVD from the drive. Those get kind of loud when spinning up. I hear the newest C2D Macbook Pro may be even more quiet (mentioned in a post well above this one)...

Take a copy of Handbrake and some sample DVDs and/or DVD Images on a DVD to your Apple store and they will let you install it and run it. Find out for yourself because we all use different settings to rip with Handbrake you cannot expect someone else to run those tests for you.

I use Images all the time and hardly ever DVDs.

no apple store by me

out of curiosity has this happened to anyone.....they replaced the order the day after.....bummers

I can't wait to get my hands on my new 17" C2D MBP :D

Been waiting for it since August, ordered it the minute the store came online in Belgium ....
And now I have to wait for Apple to verify my wiretransfer payment ....

Banks are frelling slow here :(

Friend of mine bought one, wiretransfered it from the same bank company (= instant wiretransfer) and its expected delivery date is nov. 9th.

I'm kinda hoping having to wait for payment confitrmation won't delay mine....
