MBP C2D Bootcamp

Could anyone help explain why my apple after startup will lose all my preferences from the previous state. I have bootcamp installed, i didn't know if that was the cause. None of my applications are deleted.. but files on my desktop are.. It's very strange...

I also don't know if it's possible to have wireless on the windows side... Please tell me there is without having to go out and buy a card.. Thanks

powerpoint

I installed microsoft office:mac.v.x. Word & Excel work. Powerpoint will not start (it exits with an error in the middle of starting). Before trying it I installed the latest patch from microsoft. I've already sent the error report off to Apple (fwiw). Can anyone with a C2Duo confirm this for me?

>>my edit>> I was too quick on the complaint. I rebooted and powerpoint is now working... all is well.

Ron

There was a link to a driver earlier in this thread that reportedly worked well to get wireless in XP.

Download v. 1.02 from her:http://www.dlink.com/products/support.asp?pid=489&sec=0#drivers

Thanks

Hey.. Thanks for that.. Sorry for the repeat.. I just need to figure out this buggy bootcamp or just be fine with not being able to preferenize my OSX

Here's the Datasheet On The Travelstar 5K160

Now I See Why:

"Travelstar 5K160 has the key attributes to support the stringent demands of portable computing. Improved electronics design further reduces the power consumption of this 5400 RPM drive, which beats its industry-leading predecessor by 10%; the 5K160 also runs cooler than the competition."

8MB Buffer :(

I thought for sure it would be Seagate. My bad. I didn't even know Hitachi made a 160.
And it's actually the fastest of them all in terms of access time! :D
The Seagate Momentus 5400.3 160GB and the Samsung SpinPoint M80 160GB both are rated 12ms
The Hitachi Travelstar 5K160 160GB is rated 11ms
The Seagate Momentus 7200.1 100GB is rated 10.5ms

Posting this from my new MBP! 2.33/2GB/120GB/256VRAM - it's wondeful!!!

I'll post more later.

TheSith, when you get back to us, could you comment on whether you notice any noise from the drive? Particularly when it wakes from sleep...that drives me absolutely batty.. Thanks :)

A Word on FedEx and Apple

First, thanks to everyone posting about their experiences. I feel like a kid waiting for Santa (FedEx) now that my 15" 2.33 160GB Matte has shipped :D

In my experiences with Apple, anything Build To Order (What does CTO mean, anyway) seems to come from China. I have 2 PB G4's, 1 iMac G5, and two iPods (3G, 5G) Every single one of my units came from China, and when I ordered my first Apple product (PB G4), I chose the fast shipping method, and paid extra. Since it was coming from China, and has to clear customs in the US, obviously things can only travel so fast (damn laws of physics) so, it arrived in the 2-3 days that I did pay extra for.

My next shipment was another PB G4, and I chose the free shipping. It took the same amount of time! Hmmm... What kind of racket does Apple have with shipping? So, my iPod which had engraving came from China as well, and I chose the 2-3 day shipping at a cost (actually, I think they had overnight, as an option), but it took 3 days from China.

So, anyone who has paid extra for shipping, I think you have been had, unless the invoice from Apple does not reflect the shipping cost. I did however, have my 5G iPod make it in two days! I could not believe it! It must have left on the earliest possible flight. I did not pay extra for that shipping.

So, from now on, I will *always* choose the free shipping on anything that I customize. I cannot speak for stock items, as I never have purchased a stock item from Apple.

Can anyone back this up? I saw a couple posts earlier with similar situations, but my question is why would Apple offer overnight shipping on anything shipped from China? What is the flight time from China to Alaska, where it hits customs? And since I live on the East coast, it still has another long trip across CONUS, before it reaches Logan Intl.

I am very excited that my HD is a Hitachi. I am an IT director, and have all IBM (Hitachi Ultrastar SCSI drives) in my servers. I will not buy another brand. Knock on wood, but not a single error. They cost a little more (at least they used to) but are very reliable. PMR is new to me, so it will be an interesting trip with this MBP.

My tracking shows it was picked up at 8:37a this AM, but it says it is in exception. Maybe because it did not make it on the plane out? Other people seem to have a delivery date on their tracking page, but mine says 'exception' Hopefully it will go away tonight, and I will get it by Thur (ordered it on Friday).

Good luck to everyone else, and enjoy your new unit!

- Bruce

Sorry if this is Disk101 but ...The datasheet for the 120GB Fujitsu drive has the transfer rate at 120MB/sec...where the 160GB Hitachi lists it at 540Mb/sec. Does that imply that the Fujitsu is quite a bit faster or am I confused?

Text & Keyboard on 15" vs. 17" MPBs

Thanks for your posts. This thread has been very helpful to me.

I make 100% of my living from writing--putting black text on a white background. So I don't get the nice diversion that color adds, and I tend to become obsessed about how the text looks (dark, rich, smooth) and how the keyboard and trackpad feel.

We live a couple of hours from an Apple store, so I can't just stop by and try the Rev Bs. And since it sounds like you can use the new MPBs on your lap without your pants catching on fire, I'm definitely in the market for an MBP. I did try a MacBook briefly, but the screen felt too small for the long hours I spend in front of it. I'd much appreciate your thoughts about the following:

a.) How black text looks on a 15" MBP vs. a 17" MBP. (I fear throwing in the matte vs. glossy factor, as that is even more subjective, but am happy to hear your thoughts on that as well.)

b.) If you notice any difference in the rev A vs. rev B keyboard and trackpad. (I realize our friends in China are still working on the new 17" MBPs, so that would be a 15" MBP question for now.)

Bruce,

I already figured this out 2 PBs ago. Good job catching on. :)

17" Is Higher Res, So Text Should Look A Little Sharper

17" has 33.7% more pixels in 22% more space so it should be easier on the eyes on the 17". My guess. I'm biased anyway 'cause I've already decided the 17" stock is almost perfect short of being able to see and use 4GB of RAM which will get fixed next Spring. I'm gonna stick with Matte.

That's got to be a typo.
Imagine a hard drive that can read/write a 120 megabyte file in one second!
Fast!

Mb = Megabit
MB = Megabyte

However, that doesn't mean the Fujitsu drive does 120 Megabytes a second. That is just a theoretical maximum (even high-end esktop drives don't do more than around 80MB/sec). The 540Mb/s (67,5MB/s) of the Hitachi drive sound more like a realistic value.

However, here's a real-world test of the drives (it's a review of the fujitsu 200gb drive but the other drives are listed in the results as well):
