A little OT, but...

Multimedia, I remember a while ago you had a good recomendation for a RAM dealer... I can't remember the name... and I bet some of us are going to want more RAM soon :)

Thanks!

from looking at the VR of the 17" there doesn't seem to be any new vents on the sides or back... they must have changed the innards and the cooling system inside... i think they should have added more vents on the sides

They haven't updated those yet. You can still see the tiny vents in the 15", and there is no FW 800. The pics are updated tho.

for TYC:

I've been very happy with a Seagate 500GB drive (ATA) in CoolDrives (cooldrives.com) Firewire 800/400/USB 2 Aluminum case (model# FHD-354UFb). Small size - and it's fanless. Almost totally quiet. Uses Oxford 912. Case is a bit expensive, but not having fan is very important to me, and actually it's not all that much more than other FW800 cases. They also make one that takes a SATA drive. (I bought the drive separatly, btw, from Fry's).

Now all I need is the 17" MBP C2D to plug it into... :)
(upgrading from PBG4 1.67 17")

anyday now, they say. (on waiting list at local Apple Store since 24th)

160GB 5400rpm drive not perpendicular recording drive???

Here is the system profiler information for my 2.33 C2D MBP's 160GB 5400 RPM drive (see my earlier post for the picture of the box's label). This doesn't seem to be the PMR drive you are all talking about.
edit: bear with me while I fuzz out my serial #

What's a reasonable temperature for the 2.16 core2duo to run at and at what temperature should i start worrying? I ran my new Macbook pro all weekend with DJ software which keeps the cpu at about 60%, the temperature never went above 60 degrees celsius, Is that a good thing. I don't know if that is good or not when I am not sure what is normal and what i too HOT. Thanks in advance to any insight you can give me on temps

My MBP (Yonah, not Merom) regularly gets to 75 Celcius when doing some work (as per smcFanControl). And often higher. Sitting here now doing some Werd/Keynote/iTunes/Firefox, it's sitting at 62 Celcius.

You have to have a laptop riser or the thing will cook! It's little wonder the battery life's so short (2h30 with a following wind).

It will be *really* interesting to compare this with a Merom. Please someone!

I should say, however, that my new computer runs DEATHLY quietly, and ICE cold compared to the computer in my sig. As you can imagine, INFINITELY faster as well. No dead pixels, no noises.

I believe all 160GB (and larger) are PMR. I know my Seagate 160 is, and Hitachi's data sheet verifies it also is PMR. Only way they are getting the bit densities they are. 3.5" drives have been PMR for a while, now. The 2.5" drives started early this year (with the 160, I think...)

update: guess I was a bit slow on reply - TYC beat me to it ;)

I was on the same plane :)

Mine is headed to Oregon. Scheduled delivery is Nov 1st, 12pm, but every single FedEx package I have had in the last 3 years arrives exactly one day before scheduled delivery. Not kidding.

yep same plane as well. actual ship date oct 30, est deliv date 2nd (shanghai time).

and my experience with fedex is the same. usually one day ahead. They like to give the "almost worse case scenario" time.

Thanks!

Hi Everyone, especially Multimedia,

I am having fun with my new 15" 2.33 MBP Matte, Stock, Everything I hoped and more. Installed some work programs, now installing parallels and windows xp.

This beauty is slick, VERY quiet, VERY cool, and well, she's a beaut. My first mac and I love it!!!

As always much thanks for the advice, and keeping me patient for the C2D.

Also, the green light for the camera is pretty awesome :)

Thanks

Congratulations Ron. You are the winner of first 160 sighting. Yes iLife '06 is on the second Install Disc.

So there we have it boys and girls - Hitachi got the contract. Now if we might have the specific Hitachi model number please?

I thought for sure it would be Seagate. My bad. I didn't even know Hitachi made a 160. Duh. Hitachi drives are super high quality. Formerly known as IBM DeskStars. Couldn't have happened to a nicer foreign corporation. :pThank you and congrats amislove. I'm not upset - only surprised. Hitachi drives are excellent. Wonder how they stack up in benchmarks vs. Seagate?

My only dissapointment is that the Seagate drives have a 5-year warranty, whereas the others only give 1 year. Makes me more confident in their quality.

Glossy or Matte?

Not that I have the mental capacity to go back through all of the threads, but would be nice if we could determine what specs are taking the longest...

I ordered 15"/2.16/2GB/160GB/Matte last night and my estimated delivery is the 9th... (Estimated ship is the 2nd)

Seems like either the 2.33 or the Glossy is slowing it all down..

it's a glossy, and actually that's what bumped up the estimated ship date.

Why should you not use an admin account as your primary account? You have to sudo to get root privileges anyway by default.

I really don't think you need to really do anything special, just use the damn thing.

As I understand, it is always a good idea not to run with the full privileges.

Fortunately this is easy on Mac, and with the fast user switching, it is easy to quickly switch to an admin user to do admin things when you need to, then switch back.

Mine shows the same thing!

Arrived at FedEx location
ANCHORAGE, AK

We must have been on the same plane! Where are you having it delivered? I'm in Urbana, IL

Mine is a 2.16 120gb headed to Alabama. I'm kinda expecting that my arrival time will slip to Nov 2. It was originally Nov 7, moved to Nov 1, next stop for me should be Memphis.

And yes... We have computers in Alabama. It helps to pass the time while we sit in our outhouses.

First, thanks to everyone posting about their experiences. I feel like a kid waiting for Santa (FedEx) now that my 15" 2.33 160GB Matte has shipped :D

In my experiences with Apple, anything Build To Order (What does CTO mean, anyway) seems to come from China. I have 2 PB G4's, 1 iMac G5, and two iPods (3G, 5G) Every single one of my units came from China, and when I ordered my first Apple product (PB G4), I chose the fast shipping method, and paid extra. Since it was coming from China, and has to clear customs in the US, obviously things can only travel so fast (damn laws of physics) so, it arrived in the 2-3 days that I did pay extra for.

My next shipment was another PB G4, and I chose the free shipping. It took the same amount of time! Hmmm... What kind of racket does Apple have with shipping? So, my iPod which had engraving came from China as well, and I chose the 2-3 day shipping at a cost (actually, I think they had overnight, as an option), but it took 3 days from China.

So, anyone who has paid extra for shipping, I think you have been had, unless the invoice from Apple does not reflect the shipping cost. I did however, have my 5G iPod make it in two days! I could not believe it! It must have left on the earliest possible flight. I did not pay extra for that shipping.

So, from now on, I will *always* choose the free shipping on anything that I customize. I cannot speak for stock items, as I never have purchased a stock item from Apple.

Can anyone back this up? I saw a couple posts earlier with similar situations, but my question is why would Apple offer overnight shipping on anything shipped from China? What is the flight time from China to Alaska, where it hits customs? And since I live on the East coast, it still has another long trip across CONUS, before it reaches Logan Intl.

I am very excited that my HD is a Hitachi. I am an IT director, and have all IBM (Hitachi Ultrastar SCSI drives) in my servers. I will not buy another brand. Knock on wood, but not a single error. They cost a little more (at least they used to) but are very reliable. PMR is new to me, so it will be an interesting trip with this MBP.

My tracking shows it was picked up at 8:37a this AM, but it says it is in exception. Maybe because it did not make it on the plane out? Other people seem to have a delivery date on their tracking page, but mine says 'exception' Hopefully it will go away tonight, and I will get it by Thur (ordered it on Friday).

Good luck to everyone else, and enjoy your new unit!

- Bruce

Everyone says FedEx this, FedEx that. How do I know my FedEx tracking number? Or is this only within US? Is anyone here from Australia?

Mine slipped to Nov 2nd as well. Im on the same plane as you guys also. I wish those eskimo's would just load that plane up already and get that beast to me  :D

I got the same thing on FedEx tracking (my Apple e-mail notification says it shipped 10/30, and set to arrive 11/2). I've been speed-dialing the reload button in my browser, but nothing updated since this morning.... :(

Sheesh! I'm like a 6-year-old on Christmas Eve, waiting for Santa!!

Ha. The only thing that seperates my order from yours is your crappy screen.

See below.

But I digress. This is neither the time nor the place.
