Uneven illumination

Hi folks,

Could someone give me a brief run down on the situation? Is it still present in C2D 15" macbook pros? Is it a 'feature' of all the MBPs, or will a replacement machine lack this problem?

I had been about to purchase the new 15", but the recent reports of various problems left over from rev. A. (and the fact that I might be getting a notebook from my employer) have caused me to hesitate.

Thanks in advance,
Am.

Yes. The transfers from inside out will be much faster - theoretically twice as fast. Only buy 400GB Seagate ATA/100 7200rpm with 16MB Buffers at Fry's on sale for $100 when you WAIT for the sale NOT now. Are you in a Fry's market? Where are you? Black Friday is less tahn 3 weeks away now. So be patient.

NOTE to Newbies: Please put your location in your CP so it appears with your name in your posts.

I've noted several other users mentioning seagate HD. Why only 400 gb? I'm assuming it's the best deal for the size of storage, since their 500 gb drive is about 70 bucks more?
Not sure what kind of deals we get out in Hawaii. Only have bestbuy and compusa. Shipping from anyone else usually negates any savings.
I have several dozen DV tapes to edit, so I'll be looking for a few drives.
Should I just store them in those static free bags and just swap them from the enclosure?

Does anyone else think the MBP's keyboard looks and feels ridiculously cheap, especially compared to the MB's? I was playing around with a MBP and MB today and the MBP's keyboard is just so plasticy and spongy it would put me off buying one.

Also it seems to me that MBPs have far better screens than MBs, being brighter, more vivid and having far better viewing angles. The difference was so stark that it's made me think twice about getting a C2D MB whenever they materialise.

So I'm really not sure what to buy. The case and aesthetics of the MB are far better than the MBP, but the MBP has a far better screen and specs. A black MBP with the MB keyboard would just be perfect...

I think the exact opposite. :p

I really dislike the Macbook keyboard, love the Macbook Pro one.

I have to agree. The chicklets keyboard annoys me, that's one of the reasons I went with the MacBook Pro.

And the spacing would make it impossible for me to type, too.

What about the screen issue, are MBP screens really far better than MB screens or was the MB I saw a bit of a duffer?

Have you tired it? I found the spaces mean that you make far fewer mistakes by catching the edges of other keys. I seem to be alone in thinking the MB's keyboard is totally radical!

Aye lad, ye are.

I think 23 years of typing have contributed to me making fewer mistakes than the abhorrent spacing between keys ever could. And besides, that extra spacing would make it so much harder to go from my laptop to my desktop keyboard at work. It's bad enough now with the spacing on my dell D610...

Finally I have arrived.....
Why is there this type of limisted supply of MBP?

I am surprised that Apple has not been able to push enough MBPs to their distribution channel as of yet. I don't recall there was this lack of supply in the previous launch. I recall the new products are mostly available on the same day or in a few days at the latest after Apple announced the new product or upgrades.
I also had difficult to get this C2D MBP. I tried out the Apple Store which is located in the well-known shopping mall after trying other stores which are located in secondary shopping areas. It looks like Apple is directing C2D MBP to those key stores (which are located in the prime shopping area).
Based on rumors on the net, it seems Apple is looking for additional contract manufacturers to make their notebook computers.
Even though I am sorry for the folks who have been waiting for their MBPs to arrive in their hands, the positive spin of this would be Apple is not rushing their products out to meet the market demands. When a company rushes out the production, the QC gets the lip service, which increases the chance of defective MBPs.
When I bought this early this week, the Apple Store from which I bought this said their C2D MBP (15" model) has arrived on last Friday.

Seagate have 5 year warranty. 400GB is the current sweet spot for the cost per GB. Always calculate cost per GB when comparing HD prices. 400GB HDs can be found in both PATA/100 and SATA/300 for $100 or 25¢/GB if you shop carefully on the web and/or live where sales will take them that low. So a 500GB drive should cost $125-$130 and a 750GB drive should cost around $200-$225 to get into that same 25-30¢/GB value price.

Right now 500's are still usually more than $170 and 750's are still over $300 on sales. So if you care about cost/GB then you have to seek out deals. Living in Hawaii may prevent finding such a deal as often. But CompUSA certainly runs them regularly if you study their Sunday inserts thoroughly - even Circuit City on Black Friday.

I hang 7-10 HDs off my Quad all the time plus 3 are inside. You can do the same off a MBP. So, no point in storing them in anti-static bags when they can each be in their own FW400/800/USB2 Acomdata/ADS/SIIG/Wiebetech enclosure up an available for $40-$60 each unless you don't need them all the time in which case you could do it that way.

When I bought this early this week, the Apple Store from which I bought this said their C2D MBP (15" model) has arrived on last Friday.
Who made your 120? Hitachi or Fujitsu?

is there an updated smc fan control that works with core2 mbps?
Yes but you have to ask the author to send it to you as he hasn't yet posted it.

Multimedia,

The pictures I posted are of a Core2 Duo MacBook Pro, not a Core Duo. The comparison image below that is a Rev. C 17" PowerBook. I am typing this post on the new Core2 Duo MacBook Pro and I am still annoyed with the uneveness of backlighting.

You were comparing a glossy screen (macbook) to a matte screen (macbook pro). MBP's are also available with glossy screens, but they are not perfect either, search the forums - a lot of people prefer matte.

More vents!

Wow...not sure if someone mentioned this before, but the entire back edge of the MBP is vented. Meaning, if you look from the side and around the hinge, there's six vents across and another six vents below those, separated by a plastic grid.

Sorry if I'm slow. It's literally very cool!

I don't see how a glossy/non-glossy comparison would change characteristics like viewing angles (not because of glare, because of the LCD) or brightness. The Macbook's screen was quite obviously inferior in both respects and if anything having a glossy screen should have helped it with colour saturation in comparison to the MBP.

I'm not an idiot, I know the difference between a glossy and non-glossy screen. But that option is merely a different coating and has nothing to do with the LCD underneath or it's properties. From what I saw the MacBook's screen was vastly inferior to the MBP's.

The question I need answering is whether or not the MBs have lower quality screens than the MBP's (aside from being smaller and lower res), or whether I saw a bad MB. The MB's LCD screen was very unimpressive from what I saw.

C2D MBP Rear Vents Are A Radical Redesign That Makes All Prior Mobil Macs LAME Hot

Discussed a lot before above in the 1400's. Search above with the word "Vents". For example Post 1483 Page 60:

C2D MBP Rear Vents Are A Radical Redesign That Makes All Prior Mobil Macs LAME Hot

But these photos only show ONE row of 6 vents. You see two? If so we need you to take and post a photo of two rows of six vents please. You may have a new vent system already.

Hmm.. I do not think a redesign to a later model increases the heat in the previous ones? :p No backwards causality there.

Anyway, I recently sold my 1,33 ghz g4 17" PB, which got somewhat hot, but not at all causing a problem. Was the Yonah MBP's far worse than the G4's?

Vent pic

The picture shows a row of vents right behind the keyboard, and you can kinda see another row of vents below that. It's much easier to see when you have a MBP in front of you or if you take the hinge off.

I think all the C2D MBPs should have the same venting system. It does explain why the MBPs seem relatively cool. Also, it's not the number of vents that are key, but the fact that the entire back edge of the lappie is now venting to the outside. All the vents have little "fins" in them to stop you from storing say, Cheezits, in your vents :p
