Amen. I second that one.

I keep having second thoughts about the 3gb of ram thing (and occasionally, but not as often, the glossy instead of matte thing), I wonder what would happen if I called and asked to change my order. Besides not getting my macbook until December :(

Well, mine still hasn't shipped and I can still cancel the order. Not the news I wanted to wake up to this morning!

til this summer i owned a 1.25ghz alu powerbook so maybe i can answer, you will most likely not get a full refund for an uneven screen brightness, i remember that it took a while before apple agreed that the blotches / uneven brightness was actually a problem and started offering to replace screens for free, and at that time there was lot of people with the problem. so unless it is really bad and/or many are complaining with the same problem, u'll probablt not get a full refund, but hey you should be optimistic and not worry yet :D

Thanks. I'm thinking I will be better off going to my local Best But a getting a Sony SZ laptop + a 24" monitor from Dell. What a way to treat your customers, Apple!

Enjoy your SZ........ after my experience owning a Sony Vaio S360 I'd never own another Sony product. If you want to talk about companies and how they treat their customers, Sony is a notoriously bad example....... they have some of the most terrible support in the industry. If you're looking for some modicum of good support or being treated like a human being, look at just about any other PC notebook company besides Sony.

Oh yeah, and the SZ laptops have their own share of uneven brightness, especially if you don't pay the extra money for a premium screen. If you buy an SZ370 you should be ok, but if you get an SZ320 or SZ330, you're going to get the non-premium sceeen, which has its own share of blotchiness, etc. that is easily visible with dark images on the screen.

Just figured I'd jump in. I finally decided to get the 2.33 GHz 15" model in matte (I spent a lot of time looking back and forth, and decided that the matte works really well for me, and I found the colors to still look quite good and blacks to be suitably black). I picked it up yesterday at the Apple Store in Tysons Corner, VA.

I got it home and everything is perfect so far; it's running nice and cool (seems to be averaging around 43-45 degrees, although it seems to jump up to 50-53 when doing really intensive stuff), no whine, no dead pixels. I think I see a faint amount of the "uneven brightness" that some people have talked about, but honestly it is something I can only notice if I really look for it. Specifically, the lower right hand corner of the screen seems to be one or two shades darker than the rest of the screen. But I don't think it is a backlighting issue....... other LCD's I've had have had backlight bleeding, etc. and those problems were much more noticeable and obvious..... particularly when showing an all black screen.

I'm really happy with it so far, it's definitely one of the nicest machines I own, and it is great to finally be a Mac user again after an absence of a few years (I briefly flirted with the "dark side" with a Sony Vaio S360......... and although the hardware was OK, Windows is just such a pain and a hassle).

I did install Boot Camp though, and set up a 32GB Windows partition. That is one of the things I love about these new MBP's........ it is really nice to be able to have them double as a full-fledged PC notebook as well, without having to use Windows full-time or invest in a separate Windows laptop.

Anyway, so far I really think Apple has hit a home run with this model.

After six days I can pronounce my 15" MBP (2.33 matte, 3gb, 160) a most outstanding machine!

If you dont mind me asking, When did you place your order for this machine? I had my order for the exact same machine pushed back over 3 weeks.

Mine came this morning, I could only play with it 5 mins because of work but I am amazed. It's so thin and compact compared to my iBook. The glossy screen is astounding and I just can't believe how cool it looks. Superb.

I cant wait to give it a good run through an hour from now (damn work!)

MacAdmin, have you heard anything back from your Apple rep. about this? I emailed mine, have not heard back yet.

He forwarded the email to someone else at apple, that said the delay was due to "the new conversion" and they were back logged, So i emailed back asking why units ordered after mine are shipping. I also asked for some freebies (Batteries, extra magsafe, Priority Keynote seating at Macworld) if they cant expedite my order. Ill let you know if I hear anything back.

That's about right. (I can't give you an answer as I used the Migration Assistant to copy my settings, etc. from my old CD MBP. Just shy of 60GB.)

Remember, when the drive manufacturer says a drive's capacity is 160 GB, they mean 160 billion bytes (i.e., the decimal version of giga). When OS X reports capacities, it uses the binary version of giga (i.e., 1024 * 1024 * 1024). So, the capacity of the hard drive appears as 148.75 GB in OS X.

(I've seen GiB used for the binary version of giga. Unfortunately, that notation hasn't been widely adopted yet.)

So, that means you're machine had around 18 GB of software already on it. That's about right for an OS X install with all languages, etc.

Question about installed software

Do the C2D MacBook Pro come with any freebee software (not trial ware). For example my powerbook came with several good Omni applications.

I haven't been able to cancel mine since last Thursday or so. Still hasn't shipped.

It's 1:30AM in Shanghai right now, so probably no more shipments departing for another 5-7 hours.

I had a 15" 1.5GHz Powerbook G4 on which I use Photoshop CS2 on photos nearly every day. I just swapped it for a 15" 2.33GHz MacBook Pro. Both machines have 2GB RAM. I can offer no benchmarks; only overall feel. Scrolling images around is considerably faster on the MacBook Pro. Filters seem to be slightly faster on the MacBook Pro. Painting with large brushes is quite smooth on the MacBook Pro, where it was very stuttery with the Powerbook G4.

Nothing I've done with Photoshop CS2 on the MacBook Pro feels slower than it did on the Powerbook G4. So I'm quite happy. I've also been using Adobe Lightroom B4 which is a universal binary, and it feels immensely faster for me than it was on the Powerbook G4.

Thanks for this information. I am feeling better about buying the CS2 before the universal binary is available. I have downloaded the Lightroom B4, ready to install on my MBP, which I should get today :D

That really sucks MacAdmin. How close to the expected ship date did you hear that it was going to be pushed back - did they tell you at the last minute? I'm still sitting with a Nov 8 ship, but i'm worried they'll push mine too come that day. I'm convinced it's all Edu orders that they are screwing.

I ordered mine online about an hour after the store came back up with the updated specs on Tuesday, 10/24. Straight order - no education or developer discount or anything like that. I did pay the 15 bucks for 2-day shipping. Original estimate was for shipment on 10/31 and delivery on 11/2.

It shipped, in fact, on Thursday, 10/26; and arrived on Monday, 10/30.

Good luck on getting yours. I'm guessing Apple probably has seen a surge in MBP demand which has strained production capacity, parts availablity, or both. Mine would have been one of the first orders they received, so I was lucky to get in ahead of the surge.

Since this question came up on another thread, I thought I'd make a simple benchmark to put some numbers into the mix. I posted this data there too.

I made a short Photoshop Action which loads an 8 megapixel Canon RAW file at 16 bits, does a Lens Correction by adding a vignette and fisheye effect, scaled the image larger, converted to 8 bits, then saved the file as a PSD. I timed it from the moment I started the action until the action stopped running at the end of the file save.

On the Powerbook G4, it took 40 seconds (probably accurate to about a second with my reactions and an analog stop watch). On the MacBook Pro, it took 24 seconds. I ran tests multiple times to avoid effects of needing to load code from the hard disk.
