No, but I got my free year's license for Enterprise Octane X and it's now running on all three GPUs (RX580X and two RX5700XTs). Been a hell of a wait since the first announcement of a new Mac Pro in 2018, and the announcement of Octane X in June 2019, but we finally got there!

I didn't think the 580x was supported, from what I read on the forums, or has this changed.

Yes, they managed to get the older GPUs working. I needed the Enterprise version to support more than two GPUs. Actually, it works well – just a shade less than half the power of a 5700XT in super-basic tests (it'll render in 27 seconds what a single 5700XT does in 14 – and all three GPUs do it in 7 secs). Not a major uplift but adds a useful chunk of additional grunt.

"Due to high demand, orders will be shipped within 2 weeks."

Sounds pretty optimistic to me given the short supply of GPUs these days. Also, this eyesore will require a hood. :p

That thing sure is ugly as sin. It's also their 'gaming' lineup, not to be confused with their workstation line here:

Thankfully, just black boxes. And those compute builds - hoo boy, that's power.

Sure, the workstations will crush a Mac Pro even harder... But so will the equivalently priced one I linked.

I am just really glad I sold my Mac Pro and have a higher performing computer for less money...

Do you use your computer or do you just look at it all day? I am also well aware that's the gaming line, it doesn't take anything away from that computers usability for actual work.

I think based on replies I get on these forums, most people are either just doing office based work like word and email, or are hobbiests rather than ’actual work’. I have a PC stuck under my desk for ‘actual work’ and it smashes through it. I have mentioned before on here somewhere, that the genius at the Apple store told me my PC is better than the MacPro and was half the base price....... I love Buying tech, but there is a limit !

I have a HEDT PC box under my desk doing work all day. That doesn't make my statement any less true. ?‍♂️?‍♀️

More on topic, I'd be very interested in seeing how AS scores on OctaneBench. Does anyone have numbers? It should give some baseline for future developments going forward.

(Also, you quoted me twice, two hours apart?)

So you bought a Mac Pro just to look at, got it. Nothing wrong with that I guess.

Uh, I don't have a MP. I just think that the EKWB box you linked is ugly. I think most neon / RGB setups are. I have a Fractal Meshify S2 with the lights turned off that's rather handsome. We're getting wildly off-topic here in a thread that's already kind of a trainwreck, so I'll leave it at that.

It’s amazing the time and energy some people spend in denigrating or mocking other peoples hardware choices - usually without knowing that persons‘ personal situation, preferences or needs. It’s arrogant, rude, pointless and kind of pathetic. I don’t hang around Ford forums telling people they’re idiots and should buy a BMW, but, weirdly, Mac forums are full of these kinds of people. I guess if it makes you feel better about yourself then great. But it’s really sad.

So you're aware that the RGB can be turned off... geez.

from otoy forums, appears to be time in seconds to render

Thanks.

So here's my rough napkin math. Hope I didn't screw this up.

5700XT = 225W under load, 21s render time
M1 = ~10W* under load, 101s render time

5700XT perf/watt -> 100% perf / 225W = 0.4
M1 perf/watt -> 20.7% perf / 10W = 2

Normalized, the M1 5x the efficiency of the 5700XT. The huge caveat here is that power efficiency is not a linear scale. You can't just build a giant M1 and pump oodles of power into it expecting to maintain this efficiency lead, but it's promising that a SoC can be workable at all for these kinds of tasks. The fact that a little integrated GPU can keep up with a full-sized GPU from the last gen of MPs is kind of remarkable.

I wish we had numbers to compare to other integrated GPUs - AMD's Renoir and Intel's Xe. I guess we never will since they don't support CUDA and none of them are going to be running MacOS / Metal anytime soon.

* M1 mini draws 39W under full load, and 1/4 of the SoC die is dedicated to the GPU. This is a pretty ugly approximation but it's hard to separate the integrated GPU draw from the system. Open to suggestions.

I do realize everyone is waiting for the April 20th and maybe finally at least some news bits for the eager.

At the same time at my lab (=kitchen table), I am experimenting with my 2009 single CPU 3xVII with C4D and ProRender. Pixlas Mod & Radeon VII Install Mac Pro 5,1.

Is ProRender really dead for C4D from now on? After the RedShift merger/buyout? Or have I misunderstood the silent writing on the wall?

I'm not a CG artist or a movie guy, but I do have appetite for quicker than CPU computed realistic renderings.

A 2009 Fusion Kitchen. The color do make justice to approx. 705 watts..
