Don't you have to connect with at least one of them?

Not necessarily. You need to have an Internet connection (in order to look-up the ID in the Skyhook database), which doesn't necessarily have to be through WiFi.

In the OP's case, though, yes. Didn't think of that, LOL. On a WiFi iPad, the only way to get an Internet connection is through a Wifi connection.

I believe the Location system does buffer up data on surrounding WiFi routers whenever it does get a connection.

Kind of a catch-22, though. You're going to have to set it for "ask to make connection" and be constantly dismissing dialogs as you drive down the street. Not so practical.

Maybe somebody with an iPod Touch can jump in here for yucks...

Even if apple were to put a GPS in a WiFi device for who knows WHAT reason, they sure as hell wouldn't enable it. The iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G, AND the iPad have an FM tuner/transmitter, yet I do not have FM radio on my iPhone, and still have to buy a third party transmitter. BECAUSE APPLE DISABLES IT!

What you're seeing is a just a simulation, or skyhook.... GET OVER IT

Why wouldn't the Wifi have GPS if the 3G is gonna have it? Would be a cheap move if that's the case :p

Everyone saying there's no GPS in the WiFi model is right. It's, quite literally, physically. Not. There.

Period.

The "GPS" you claim to be seeing (and apparently will be taking a video of) is based on Skyhook, which can be remarkably accurate in certain locations. Which others have already, quite accurately, mentioned in this thread. That's it.

Let it go. You're wrong, and judging from your posts, not very intelligent either. Listen to those who are more intelligent than you.

And yes, the chip Apple uses for 3G on the iPhone, and presumably the iPad as well, does GPS as well.

Hey guys I just checked my iPhone 3GS and there was an iPad stuffed in there. Just saved myself $500 sweet!
lol

I don't see what all the hubbub is about. I was messing around yesterday on my way to work I tethered my wifi ipad to my phone and tried using the google maps to get me to work and it worked fine. I suspect the gps will operate the same in the 3g version just it will use the internal 3g connection intead of having to be tethered?

After using it though I think it pretty much sucks compared to the google maps navigation on my phone so I don't ever see myself using it. The phone has voice nav so you dont have to look at the screen and you dont have to enter the addresses you can just talk to it and say navigate to pizza etc.. then just click the address of the place you want to go. It's so much more convenient when you are in the car.

No,
Your
iPad
Didn't
Use
The
GPS
In
Your
Phone.

Really.

I can't believe I forgot about this thread.

It should be a good lesson for making unequivocal posts when you're not 100% sure what you're talking about.

And yes, I will eat my words if the evidence is ever produced.

My ipad is the samething.

I was driving teh same day i got the ipad (launch day)

I decided to test the ipad and see if it would read my location and lo and behold It recognised my location. No wifi no3g nothing.

I installed navgon on it and I use it as my gps system for my car :)

And yes i was not connected to anything. I have been using computers for over 10 years i know when im connected.

The wifi ipad certainly does have a gps chip in it.

It doesn't have to be connected to work with wifi. It just needs to see hotspots. Try turning off wifi and seeing if it works then.

lets end this. our wifi version dont have GPS.

i have loaded GPS drive and turned-off the wifi and it did not work.

so there you are. no GPS chip inside.

Oh boy... where are you guys driving? By coffee shops, densely populated neighborhoods, etc.? Turn off your wifi, then try it... poof... You can use wifi to get general directions but it is in no way, shape or form a reliable turn by turn GPS.

I also have great news. I found a turkey sandwich in my iPad.

ash =o)

Gratz.

We finally have someone who understands how gps works. Thanks.

These other guys are probably driving around NYC.

I think this is the same thing that makes people post that they were able to JB a 3.1.3 iPhone 3GS without SHSH backups.

Hi,

When I was visiting Ottawa last fall I brought my iPod Touch to use the Maps App. As we were driving around trying to find the UofO I noticed that my location marker was moving on the Map, but only in populated areas (not on the freeway).

This sounds like the same thing.
