Yeah, but they save the trouble of "OH SHI-, there is a new game out that needs 500GB RAM and a 20 Core CPU just to animate my characters face!"

My old PlayStation 2, purchased on day one, plays all games that have been made over the last 8 years (for the PlayStation 2). And I expect my PlayStation 3 to do the same.

You don't get that kind of mileage out of a gaming PC.

Wow it appears you don't have any concept of PC gaming at all.

I've got a 2 year old iMac that I still use as a gaming system, sure I have to turn games down but so what? The graphic card is still as powerful as ever. If games kept looking below par then it'd carry on going for another 8 years. But PC gaming is progressive.
Besides there's always the independent market - you rarely need a powerful system to run them games.

And? :) Movies are made in 24 fps, most TV shows are below 30 fps. The human eye barely notices anything above 30fps.
Does the game drop below 30fps on the Xbox? I haven't even noticed and don't care! I'm sitting here about to play GTA 4 and you're not :0
Whoaaaa nelly. Most TV's are not locked to 30fps. Most TV's infact, any modern TV with a progressive mode, runs at 60fps. All HDTV's run at 60fps, though some have options to run at 24fps (I think my Bravia does at least).
Rockstar like to limit their GTA games to 30fps, btw. So it's very likely that it is 30fps. It's certainly not 60, even from just playing the 360 version that's obvious enough!

Hehe. or $200 for a 360.
+an extra £20 per game than PC gaming, +£40 to play online a year, +locked hardware that you can't fix yourself, +extra for silly locked proprietary drives, wifi and any other accessory you might need. :D Switching to PC gaming was the best value decision I made just from saving money on games alone.

I don't understand why more people don't just use their computer for computing and buy a console for gaming? Gaming on a sofa in front of the TV is a lot more comfortable!
Then get a comfier PC chair. I much prefer playing PC games because (I feel like I have to write this list out at least once a week now :D) they're cheaper, have more control options, free to play online, free DLC (for the most case), faster load times, better graphics (both texture and resolution) and mods.

:D

GTAIV2008-12-0218-28-39-84.jpg

I only have 512 megs on my video card. :)

Can you specify your system specs and what framerates with those settings.

I finally got GTA IV to run ok at 1024X768 on my mid 2007 MBP with low settings...:(

Performance on 515Mmb 9600 Unibody

ive tried running this on my new 512Mb 9600 Unibody 4Gb RAM 2.53 under XP and can say that its is choppy as hell.
auto configure went for the MBP's normal resolution of 1400x900 (ish) which is a bit optimistic to say the least. i get 15fps at that resolution on medium.

i think i have enough texture memory as moving the sliders down from medium to low makes no difference to the frame rate.

dropping resolutions makes minimal difference unless you go right down to 800x600 and performance comes up to 30fps according to benchmark.

playing at this sort of speed is quite doable but its pretty annoying that this really should not be the case.

FYI, as with anything you do using the 9600 card you could start selling hotdogs of the top of your laptop there's so much heat given off! (fans whirring)

come on rockstar, sort it out!

I have exactly the same computer and the issue here, the game is ridiculously slow and quite ugly sometimes.
Do you guys think this might be fixed via update from R* ?

anyone tried it on early 08 MP with 8800 :) ?
man i went with 8800GT just for that game, id get 2600 otherwise :D

That was posted on Shack News. My vid card only has 512 megs, that guys had 1011 -- so probably an SLI setup, so he didn't even meet the requirements to run this game on high.

How much VRAM do you have on your MBP? The one I have here has 256, but I don't play games on it, I use it for everything else. From what I understand, 256 is the minimum requirement.

I believe more and more that the patch will indeed fix the heavy graphics instability. I've read even people with the most powerful rigs have been seeing terrible falters in the graphics performance. Your 9600m GT 512mb runs it just as well as my 8600m GT 128mb does, resolution and all... and that shouldn't be so.

Sorry to spam, but here is an update on the patch from gta4.net...

"Patch coming in the next few days
Posted by adamcs at 02:07. Category: General
Rockstar have just revealed on our forum that a patch for GTA IV PC is due to be made available in the next few days. Here is what they had to say:

Driver News
We’re pleased to announce that in co-operation with Nvidia a new driver has been released that improves performance and fixes a major issue with 7900 series cards. If you haven’t gotten the driver yet download it here: http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_gtaiv_downloads.html

ATI has also agreed to officially release Catalyst 8.12 which will release on Dec 10th from http://game.amd.com. Expect significant performance improvements when using this new driver.

Patch Is On The Way
We are working on making a patch available in the next few days. Since Grand Theft Auto IV is a Games For Windows – Live game the patch must be certified by Microsoft before release. The patch is already at Microsoft and we expect a speedy approval. The patch contains a variety of fixes including:

A fix to the crash after legal screen that some German customers were reporting.
Numerous improvements to the video editor: Smarter naming of videos, improved rendering quality, better fx during replays
Fix to bowling while using certain sensitive mice
Fix for ATI 1900 shadows
Overall savings to memory
Graphic improvements to particle systems and mirrors
Multiplayer character settings are preserved
Support for DirectInput controllers. Note: The current hack way of supporting these controllers may not work with the improved functionality. So we recommend you remove the hack before upgrading to the patch.
Issues with power management software have also been fixed (slow speed, double speed issues). Even after the patch comes out setting power management software to maximum performance is recommended. We’ve seen cases where power management software does not detect the game is running and puts the CPU in green mode.

Besides the patch we’ve also improved the way the Social Club handles data this should have greatly reduced or eliminated the Mma10 error. If you are still receiving this error after logging in and out of Social Club we would like to know as much info as you can about it.

NVIDIA release new driver for GTA4
Posted by adamcs at 01:00. Category: General
NVIDIA have released a new driver which they are encouraging users to install in order to give them the best experience with Grand Theft Auto IV. The new GeForce v180.84 driver can be downloaded at nZone:

Download GeForce Driver 180.84 (Win XP)
Download GeForce Driver 180.84 (Win XP 64-bit)
Download GeForce Driver 180.84 (Vista)
Download GeForce Driver 180.84 (Vista 64-bit)
Please note however that the driver is still beta, and has not yet passed Microsoft testing and approval, and should therefore be used at your own risk.

Some NVIDIA users at our forum are reporting improvements of up to 10 fps, while some users are reporting no change at all. See the related topic here."

What about the new cards!!

Guys, I got myself GTA and Call of Duty 5.
all runs on bootcamp on macpro 1st gen. all runs ok but the grafic cards are killer. 256MB is not enough.

I guess I need 1.5tb to run this game in full detail and smooth.

How can you play this game in 800x600? I spend money and I'm done with playing till new cards will arrive. January hopefully?

What do you mean, IS the refresh suppose to include Better graphics cards?

grafic card update

OH my friend Tman1523

I hope so, If you look what PC users have. There will (MUST) be an update in January. If not, that would really suck big time as I run only 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT.

Waiting to upgrade.

Driver Update

i dont think the driver updates issued are yet compatible with Mackbook pros. i dont think that any newer display drivers exist for 9600m gt at all.

i dont remember vice city being like this to control. maybe i should get an external keyboard and something other than this dam mighty mouse.

also, it seem to be the case that you cant save your single player game with out the various online accounts, is that the case? seems insane

Right, they would come over Apple's Software Update and I don't think Apple is going to hurry.
(new drivers for mobile gfx cards usually come from the laptop's vendor)

I agree that it's a little bit notchy (does that make sense in English?)

I've tested this game on the new alu. macbooks. Spec is in my sig. I must say, it runs just as well as my mbp (2.4ghz/6gb/8600gt 256mb) on the GeForce 9400M.

I'm downloading the new drivers to test. I hope I get 10 more fps, and get the texture problems to go away

Edit: just tested with the new drivers. At 800x600, all low, I'm getting 25-40 fps on the MacBook, and on the MBP with the same settings, 15-30 fps.

FPS rating determined standing outside "home"

I would like to know what FPS do you guys have + settings on Unibody MBP 2.53, 9600M GT with 512MB ???
I have 16 FPS with everything at low

What was your fps before the driver update and where did you get a modified .inf file for the drivers?

Has anyone gotten the 180.84 driver to work on laptop GPU's?

Before installing the new GTA IV 180.84 drivers I was running the standard 167.63 drivers supplied by apple bootcamp update 2.1, which are quite dated. Although the game was somewhat playable, I was having serious framing issues and the gpu seemed to bog down under the load, even though the benchmark would generally show about 20 fps. At medium settings the gpu would bog down and textures would disappear and the game would be unplayable. When doing the benchmark, I noticed the textures would disappear halfway through at times. Serious issues there.

I dl and installed the new driver from laptopvideo2go last night and it seems to have eliminated the missing/invisible texture issues I was having, even at higher resolutions. Although my fps seem to still average between 20-25 the gameplay seems vastly improved and smoother. Shading is still grainy at 1152X864, however I am glad I able to even run at that resolution. I will try to force higher resulutions with -norestrictions cmd line and -windowed mode and report back. I am extremely excited about these drivers! I am having confidence now that this game WILL be playable and enjoyable even on my 1 year old MBP!

anyone tried DX10 VS DX9 ? because im really not into vista...

I just updated the drivers on my 2007 iMac (2.4GHz, 2GB RAM, X2600 256MB) to the latest versions offered by ATi using the DriverHeaven Mobility Modder tool. I got about a 10fps increase over the originals.

Here are the 3 benchmarks I have done. First one was using the drivers supplied on the Leopard disc, the second one was performed using the updated Boot Camp drivers from ATi.com and the third was using the absolute latest ATi drivers.

A further GTA IV specific driver update is coming from ATi on Wednesday.
Everything was on minimum and the game was running at 800x600.

The game is now bearable, and I think I will begin to play. I'm trying it out on my 2.0GHz Aluminium MacBook in a moment, although I would appreciate it if someone could point me in the direction of how to modify nVidia's latest drivers to work on the machine.

I just updated to the DOX: Alternative 180.84 drivers, and I must say that it runs better than before.

Render Setting: High
Texture Setting: Medium

The other settings are all different everything less than 40.

Resolution: 800x600.

Benchmarked at 25.5 FPS.

All on a MacBook Pro w/ an nvidia 8600m GT 128mb vram card.

nVidia has done well with this new driver, still runs choppy as hell at native res (1440x900) coming in at 6 fps... pathetic.

Anyway, nVidia has done their part, your turn RockStar.

I just gave up on trying this on my MacBook (Late 2008) because it simply does not run. You can get to the main menu, but it simply crashes when you ask it to render anything.
