for peeps with the newest unibody macbook pro:

what graphic settings are you guys using? im just using auto and the highest res i can use is 800x600. anyone using a mac pro also?

Yeah, you might want to upgrade to the 180.84 drivers, it does indeed help. I used the DOX driver and it work well, problem is... it will not wake from standby anymore, or if the screen goes off... you have to hold the power button down until it shuts off and restart it.

Kinda sucks, but that's what we'll have to do until RockStar shows results.

I just updated to the DOX: Alternative 180.84 drivers, and I must say that it runs better than before.

Render Setting: High
Texture Setting: Medium

The other settings are all different everything less than 40.

Resolution: 800x600.

Benchmarked at 25.5 FPS.

All on a MacBook Pro w/ an nvidia 8600m GT 128mb vram card.

nVidia has done well with this new driver, still runs choppy as hell at native res (1440x900) coming in at 6 fps... pathetic.

Anyway, nVidia has done their part, your turn RockStar.

One question Markov. Is your Nvidia control panel working with the DOX version? I noticed with the regular 180.84 version, the panel is flaky because altering/creating new profiles crashes the nvidia control panel.

I finally got it to work on my Late 2008 MacBook. It ran, just not very well. It's not really worth bothering with if you have one of those machines.

800*600 sound really bad, so if I understand it's a compromise between either good FPS (i have 17 max on new MBP...) or good Resolution

Do you think that an update from R* will improve the graphics at low resolution or improve the FPS at high res ??

i use a MP (8800GT). haven tried it yet on unibody.
i have only 444mb resources?! (wtf)

i can run it on native resolution (1280*1024)
very high render settings, ~40 distance, full distance detail
only medium texture quality.
but itruns BUTTER SMOOTH. no chopping no anything.
i dont know why i cant increase it.. :( sucks completely.
and yeah, i have the latest driver.
im running it on x64 so i have full 4Gigs of ram up and running.
i dont get it..

SolRayz:

It does work, in both versions. The non DOX version actually caused my computer to completely freeze up anytime I tried to use any program that directly accessed the GPU for any kind of test or hardware acceleration... it was odd. But in any case, yes, it did work.

Try this, completely uninstall your graphics driver, reboot, install the DOX version (you will have to extract it, let it copy its files, choose alternate, then close the setup box. Next go into device manager and install the graphics driver that way, it works a hell of a lot better.) After installation, reboot again and everything should be working.

ibanana:

I have heard that the current version has too heavy of a load on the CPU and GPU which is creating a bottleneck of sorts... and I have also hear there is a massive memory leak. A patch could fix either of these problems and possibly/ HOPEFULLY boost performance by a long shot.

If not, there will probably be an angry mod outside of rockstar the day the patch is released. lol

Anybody find that some resolutions don't fill the widescreen? I'm having to run it at 1024 x 600 on my 20" iMac.

It runs smoothly at that res with medium rendering and low everything else. It just creeps over the 256Mb of the Radeon 2600, but never mind.

I'm running the 12th November ATI drivers. Hopefully the new one will let me bump it up to 1280 resolution.

alright!

news:
everything maxed out (using 1449MB of 444MB)
runs smooth on MP 8x2,8 8800gt 4gig ram
x64

see ya :D

Thanks Markov. Cleaned out the drivers and tried again with the DOX version this time around. All seems to be fine now. Haven't had a chance to test out the game but we will see later tonight. Thanks...been years since I did the whole winblows driver thing!

This driver isn't available for macs!:(
Did anyone tried it on a PC? Is it any good?

ohh...I guess I will have to wait for game patch.

I have a similar mac pro as you and it definitely runs smoothly.

However, it is necessary to have the 8800GT in order to run it well. I had the Radeon 2600XT but it could not run the game well. The maximum resolution was 1024x768 with medium and low settings (about 20fps). I upgraded to the 8800GT and the game started to work as it should. With the 8800GT, I can run it at 1920 x 1200 (60 Hz), Texture Quality: Medium, Render Quality: Highest, View Distance: 25, Detail Distance: 75, Vehicle density: 50 (or 100, but too many cars to drive fast on the streets), Shadow density: 1 and the game runs well at 25-45fps (typically 30-35 fps, benchmark gives 41fps).

Really nice and good looking game but be prepared for a hw upgrade. Also use the latest nvidia driver (in my case 180.84 beta).

I tried GTA4 on my new MBP unibody@2,53 using Dox Optimised 180.84 driver and well i get 14 frames on native resolution and all maxed = unplayable. When turning everything on low and playing on 800*600 Resolution i get about 22!( WTF?) frames= unplayable for me and looks like Crazy Taxi.. i guess GTA4 for pc was made by some drunked monkeys... sucks

cool!

here i use 8800gt with 180.84 as well.
i guess im lucky i have a small screen (19")
try adding commandline.txt file to the main dir and write in it "-norestrictions"
i was able to increase it to max everything @1280x1024 (says it uses 1449M/444mb of resources lol)
and the best thing is it still runs smoothly!! maxed out.
and maxed out drivers (16q antialias, triplebuffer, etc.)
but as i said i only have 1280x1024 of native resolution. :)
be sure to enable the support for multithreading in nvidia center.
i think it really takes advantage of many cores.

Camera/keyboard issue with new patch
Posted by adamcs at 15:57. Category: General

Some users are experiencing a "spinning camera" issue after installing the new GTA IV PC patch. Rockstar Games has apologised for this, and provided a temporary solution at our forums:

To fix the issue:

A1) Unplug any DirectInput controllers (gamepads, joysticks etc..)
A2) Reboot your computer
A3) Launch GTA IV

If the issue persists, the following instructions are provided as a guide to assist you in deleting the conflicting DirectInput drivers:

B1) Exit game
B2) Go to Start->Control Panel->System->Hardware Tab->Device Manager->Human Interface Devices
B3) Locate drivers for devices
B4) Delete drivers for devices
B5) Launch GTA IV

**Some users are able to reinstall the drivers for their DirectInput devices, with the device attached, and have found that it will work in game. If you do attempt to reinstall your device and the problem resurfaces, please follow steps B1-B5 again.

The only issue I have with the drivers, is that the display tends to not "wake up" after it has been put into standby, or even just fallen asleep. Sometimes it will, and other times it will not. It's hit or miss with it. They do seem to improve graphics stability in the game.

All in all, they are relatively safe.

thanks for the quick reply markov...its hard to get hard info on bootcamp video card drivers sigh....

ok i will try it tonight then on the imac and see what gta does or doesnt haha

one last question....last time when i tried to update video drivers and it didnt work....the "rollback driver" or whatever button was greyed out and i had major stress trying to get back to the apple bootcamp ye olde video driver..... is there any way to back them up manual or are they downloadable somewhere if i get stuck again?? paranoid

again thanks for advice!!

UPDATE: I upgraded to dox drivers using markov etc advice and worked!!!...havent tested a lot yet and not GTAIV yet BUT fallout3 runs at native resn (1920) about maybe 10 fps faster than before.....its proooobably a little cooler to i think?? but too early to say for sure

Thanks for the help!!!
