500 posts just to get recognized? thats ridiculous. granted that i've never come up to a forum with this 'process' (only ones where donators may have an avatar i understand), seems like not-so-friendly way to attract 'newcomers'.

Who says you need an avatar to be recognized? Contribute to the discussions, offer valuable opinions, help people out - that's how you truly get recognized by your peers - by being an active member on the Forum.

whatever. this rant adds onto my useless goal to 500 posts.

It's not good to have useless goals in life. All your goals should have meaning. Also, be careful not to spam, or post useless posts, as that is considered spam and will not be tolerated. Just some friendly advice.

In conclusion on this whole avatar matter, if people put such a high priority on having a little picture under their name perhaps they are here for the wrong reasons...

you should also, its not there. if you found it, good job.

"you must have a hierarchy to have an avatar here!"

whatever. this rant adds onto my useless goal to 500 posts.

holy high frack o_O is an avatar really that important???

I know a bunch of people that got recognized before having an avatar (myself included because i am so loved ^_^)

Well, maybe you should have read the thread BEFORE asking a stupid question, rather than just skimming it. As for me, I have an avatar, and have had it for some time (that was over 3500 posts ago).

If getting to 500 posts (outside Politics, not in wastelanded threads, and none deleted) seems to be a challenge for you, you're free to go to a forum where they allow 25MB 1024x768 5 minute long animated gifs to new members.

Glad to see something like this got "stickied". Maybe it'll keep posting the same question down some, even if "Hey" is misspelled.

Its been 'stickied' for over a year and we still get the same insane rants about 500 posts and 'help, I can't get my avatar to work'. But, who knows how many it has stopped. No way to tell.

I never cease to be amazed at how important an avatar is to one's self worth.

We've spoiled our kids with instant gratification and giving them everything they want, when they want it, especially if the pitch a fit about it. Even young couples today go into deep debt so that they can have immediately everything that their parents spent a lifetime accumulating.

Wonder what the average age of the avatar complainer is?
Bet it is under 25, probably under 20
Bet nobody over 35 ever complains about not having an avatar

It's just a 75X75 picture folks! Get a grip.
If not having one keeps you from participating here, you were here for the wrong reason anyway.

Contributing to MacRumors (by means of money) elevates one's status to a god or goddess (I think); does that bypass the whole '500 post == avatar' issue?

Correct me if I'm wrong about that. I figured instead of complaining sending money might help stop stuff like this. :D

nope you still need to reach 500 posts to get a 'tar even if you pay up.

Do you think allowing that would be a good thing?

Maybe it's irrelevant...it is after all, just a picture.

As I said above, it is just a picture. I say leave it at 500 posts. And ban anyone who tries to spam in order to reach it quickly.

I was thinking of it from a more expoloitative side: those who are obsessed with getting a tiny picture on the forums get to help fund the site.

Just an idea is all...though I doubt anyone who would complain about this would go through with shelling out cash.

We don't want people like that here though. MacRumors isn't about avatars, donations and exploitation.

Sounds like you need the "senior special" -- Metamucil and Prune Juice with a dose of Preparation H to make it all flow better.

Coming from an avatarless member who has nevertheless been around a while, I think it's still a good way to recognize active MR members from others and to maybe pay more attention to posts from tar'ed members  Personally I'm more interested in a MR mug than a tar... :D

I also would like a MacRumors mug - I don't think they are offered anymore, not for the past few years I believe. I think someone posted a link once to MacRumors shitrs, but that was about it. Does anyone have any further information on this, because I'd be all over a MR mug like white on rice.

You could drink apple cider out of it, and enjoy it with your sandwidges. :)
