I'm at about 2.5 years of membership with just over 200 posts. I'll easily beat your record at my current glacial pace! :p

Yeah, I used to have a different account (that I forgot I had,) that I started on 12/12/02, then started this account on 9/15/03, so it has taken me a little over 3 years to hit the mark. (I somehow had one old Mac logged in on the old account, and created a new account on a newer Mac, and didn't even realize that I was posting under two names. A mod pointed it out, and folded the other account's posts into this one, then got rid of the other account.)

I'd feel a whole lot better about the "how to" description in message 1 of this thread if I actually had an "Edit Avatar" in my CP menu.

So what do I do?

If you've only just made 500 posts, then the forum might not have 'caught up' yet, as it were. It's common for it to take a while to register the fact that you're 'tar worthy.

Give it an hour or so and you shouldn't have any problems. :)

psh! Don't listen to them. You don't really need 500 posts to get an avatar, edesignuk's pulling your leg and everyone is running with it.

Check out my post count and see for yourself.

Wow, you sure must like posting in a lot of useless threads... :p

Hyper

I clicked on a hyperlink that lead me to this thread. Now, I realize, I've got to have 500 posts. I don't get this criteria...will this not lead to fivolous posts?

Apparently it does...

Some people stick to useful posts no matter what the rules are, and some people make frivolous ones no matter what the rules are. It's true that some people post more than they would otherwise to eventually qualify for an avatar, but the moderators are there to remove frivolous posts.

The main reason for post-count minimums is to make sure that other forum members have a chance to get to know you before you can participate in certain forums or be given the privilege to use an avatar. If people post based on their post count rather than when they have something useful to say, other members (and the moderators) will have plenty of chances to spot the lack of quality, so again the rule serves its purpose.

500 posts

Hmmm. The PC forum does not require 500 posts to get an Avatar. But then, their Avatars are not as cool or creative as these here. :D

We've had a couple of people ask about the avatar rules again today.

Perhaps this will help: We've expanded the explanations (yet again) on the Edit Profile Picture and Edit Avatar pages in the Control Panel so that more people have a chance to understand the difference.

However, if people still ask, please continue to give them the answer or point them to this thread or the FAQ.

Thanks as always for your help, Q. If the threads continue, the next step should be flashing text...bold pink Comic Sans.

Actually,

I have adopted this policy on my forums as well. We switched from Invision board, to vBulletin as recently as this week. Along with the Avatar limit, we do not allow new users to post attachments until they reach a specific post count.

Since attachments and Avatars take up server space, and bandwidth, we want to only grant those privileges to those that are interested in our site, and have contributed to the culture of our forums.

Is there any way to limit newbies posting links? If their links were somehow disabled (obviously still visible though), then this might reduce our SPAM slightly.

Hmm.. I have 501 posts, but no Edit Avatar option. Do I have to wait so long or something?

Wow that's ironic. The FAQ explained that but I failed to see it. Never mind! :D

Edit x2: I'll go to bed now and when I wake up I might magically have an Edit Avatar option sitting in my CP.

No avatar??? call me crazy...

I'm pretty new at the computer world, but around enough. So why can't we have an avatar, unless you have 500 posts? Just seems little silly to me...

You need to earn respect, we don't just give out avatars to anyone around here.:)
