Hey everyone just letting you know that you can indeed still use xar without Darwin Ports if you have gcc installed already…

package problem

I have having the same problem as rumac. I got all the steps done up to the point to replace the package in the image and then nothing I did worked. I tried changing the privilages and got error -195. I even tried making a an image that was read write and that didn't work. Still get you can't modify package comment. Any help would be great.

Thanks Suneohair for posting this solution. I'm almost there but for the life of me I just cant seem to be able to change file names or drop files into the sparse dmg! Steps 1-5 went fine.
Finder reports- The item 'NewOSInstall.mpkg could not be moved because 'Packages' cannot be modified.
I had no problem editing and saving the distribution file but finder will not let me modify names or drop the newOSinstall.mpkg into the /System/Installation/Packages folder. Is there some way to do this from terminal or is there something very simple that I'm missing?
Edit: get info on mounted image says I can read/write.....baffled :-( please help

I am having the exact same problem. Any solution?

^ I get an "Operation Not Permitted" when I try that. Does it need to be a .iso as opposed to a .dmg? Any suggestions?

leopard

I get an "Operation Not Permitted" when I try that, also. Any suggestions?

Update:

tupring is right.....get info on unmounted dmg. Thanks!
Typing now on 10.5.

So how did you end up getting permission? I've changed it to myself (who is admin,) but it still won't let me edit the sparse image..

i think once you have the .dmg of the disk . get info on the unmounted image and expand ownership & permissions and expand details and make sure that everything is set correctly. which i dont know what it is

i wish someone would elaborate on it. i am in the prosess of downloading xcode and going to install it and install macports and then xar. i already have carbon copy cloner. so any more info would greatly be appreciated .

ok i have xcode installed and installed macports, when i type CD /opt/local/bin/portslocation/dports/xar it tells me that the directory don't exist.

i skippd that part and typed sudo port install xar and it started downloading and installing something called bzip2. is something wrong with what i did. or is this what it downloads.

It needs to download/compile dependencies before it can compile xar. It took > hour to do this on mine.

once i installed xcode i installed macports i did the terminal command shown on the page and all went well i let it do what it was doing untill it was done. then when i tryed to do that CD command it told me that the directory didnt exist, that is when i skipped to the next command "sudo port install xar" and it started to download bzip2,

what i am asking is, is it suppose to be downloading bzip2

once this is done doing what its doing , i need to make a sparse image. what do you mean by that, do i mount the image and copy the mounted image to another part of the HDD which puts it into a folder, or what. i do have CCC installed on my DA but i am doing the work on my Yikes. maybe i should download that freeDMG on the Yikes.

sorry for being such a nOOb, but this is the first time doing this

change all the permissions you see to 'your user name' I guess that is pokey 3.
If you still can't change file names you should be able to drag files to the trash and drop new files in. When you're done change all the permissions back.
Good luck. I'm on 10.5 now and it's faster than 10.4 on my imacg4 800.
One heck of a sleep bug though. Seems to kill the screen but on reboot everything is fine.

have you tryed logging out and back in or rebooting the system or try to see if the permissions is screwed up. or set the privlages to the account you are using.

i am almost there, but i am stuck. i made a .dmg already but i need to make a sparse image from the dmg i made. if i do, how do i do that using freedmg. can someone tell me what they did.

BTW the image i made is already read and write. but what do i need to do

transic

get info on the file you're trying to delete and change the permissions to you.
That should do it.

should i make the .dmg i made into a read only image and then make the sparse image from it. right now its a read and write image, i havent mounted it yet ( i have herd that if you mount one like that it will make it not bootable).

i seen in freedmg when you convert the image to select sparse. boy is it taking forever to do on my Yikes. but its getting there. i also went ahead and made the first .dmg a read only before i started to convert it to a sparce image.

sorry i was getting a head of myself and getting worried for nothing

leopard

I think I have some good news. Try Carbon Copy Cloner to make the Sparse Image. When I used that program I had no problem adding the files to the image. I am burning the image now and will post results soon. Crossing my fingers.

i got the sparse image using freeDMG by mounting the .dmg and selected the mounted vilume to use to make the sparseimage and so far so good but i get a error trying to use xar. it gives me Error opening xar archive:

i dont know what i am doing wrong. maybe i need to do something with the file permissions.

EDIT... nope i was getting the folder location wrong. just made the edits and put everything back together and redid the desktop to hide things again, and transferring the image back to the DA to be burned. this will tell me if i made the edits correctly or not

wish me luck

Edit: again, just got done burning and it BOOTED my DA with no issue and everything seemed to be real smooth and snappy. I went all the way to where you select the HDD to install to and i quit to come back here to tell the good news, but it wont boot the Yikes G4 ( oh well its staying with tiger anyway)

can somebody provide the modified OSInstall.mpkg to us so we just replace the orginal one, and then all g3 powerpc can install the leopard?

i have the orginal one and don't know if i can link the link here for you to modify.

I can confirm that using Carbon Copy Cloner to make the sparseimage, then setting the permissions on the outputted sparseimage to yourself WORKS. I was able to drop in the OSInstall.mpkg into the sparseimage.

So, USE CARBON COPY CLONER!! :)
