Hello, was wondering if that procedure will work with a G3 mac (Ibook) laptop computer 512 mb ram/800 mhz? Thanks

ahhh. OMG cant people read.

Leopard WILL NOT WORK ON A G3 SYSTEM PERIOD. only systems with a G4 CPU will run leopard.

how many times on page 3 did i say this, and how many more times will i say it

Oh btw i forgot my manners

Thank you suneohair for the guide, it made it allot easier to get this done.
i think the only thing that is keeping the AGP G4's from booting is the virtual speed block for any AGP system under 867mhz. also a CPU upgrade (867mhz +) will allow you to install Leopard without modding the installer, cause there is no Machine ID block for AGP systems (sawtooth and up). the Yikes G4 is the only G4 system that will have issues cause it has the same Machine ID as the B&W.

Things you will need
  • Darwin Ports with xar installed, if running Tiger or below. Don't need this if running Leopard.

Could one not use the Terminal.app that can opened from the install disc and perform the xar operations from there? The utilities apps are accessible even though the Mac is not supported. That way one could get around the installation of xar on Tiger.

well when i was doing the edit i realized that non of the AGP Mac's are blocked by the Machine ID, you can also see the list on page 1 of this topic. the only thing that was blocking the installer for AGP Macs was the virtual speed block (for G4's under 867mhz) and that can be worked around with a CPU upgrade. so in the beginning i was right on having a CPU upgrade above 867mhz would get past the virtual block, and would allow you to install 10.5,

http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/26/leopard-on-an-8-year-old-g4-power-mac-can-it-be-done/

i found that after i got everything edited and burned and made a successful modded Leopard install DVD. he is using a G4 7455 CPU upgrade i do think cause of the L3 cache. i am going to be getting the dual G4 7455 1.4ghz cpu upgrade for my DA. which should run Leopard fine.

i would not know if one could use the terminal app from the leopard disk or not. so far i have sen issues using app's for one OS to another, that would make them not as backwards compatible as one would think

So, since I have a DP 500 I have been trying to figure out a way to get Leopard onto it, since the installer kindly tells me my Mac is unsupported. My build is 9A466, however it should work for the GM as well. Without further delay.... the guide.

This is super cool! Thanks a bunch :)

I'd already copied my Leopard install DVD to a partition on an external drive for disaster recovery purposes, so I made the edits to that.

Unfortunately it wouldn't boot on a Power Mac G4, presumably as the drive is using a GUID partition map.

So I cloned it to another drive, and it's now installing on a Dual 533MHz Power Mac G4 with Radeon 9600 (hopefully Core Image will be hardware accelerated which will help performance greatly) :D

Note that I simply changed the "false" operator to "true" - I left the CPU speed as it was. So I can confirm this does work.

i burned the sparse image to a dual layer disk. ran the installer. rebooted and i get as far as the preparing installer screen. then i get an error that sayd i should try cleaning the disk and reinstall. please help.

also if someone could explain the problems that some are running into with step six.

no one can help? or have any ideas?

this is the error message:
"There was a problem reading the Mac OS X installation disc. Carefully clean the disc, and try reinstalling."

it says this even when i restored the image to my 2nd internal drive. this is driving me crazy.

heres the error message

Typing this using Leopard on a Dual 533MHz Power Mac G4 with Radeon 9600. Core Image: Hardware Accelerated. :D

I'd say it's running faster than Tiger. I love old Macs and new Mac OSes

regarding my last post

i think i may have narrowed down my problem. the error to clean and reinstall that i get seems to always pop up around the same time as the message that notifies you about not being able to install bc your system doesn't support. so since it does this for both the external drive and the cd. i suspect that i may have made a mistake when creating the newosinstall.mpkg. when i type the command in terminal to create the new .mpkg, i get this error.

Error adding file ./

can anyone explain. also before i also noticed a change. when i created the new .mpkg the first time, i noticed the terminal still copying a load of files after the newosinstall.mpkg was created on my desktop. this could be the problem. the 2nd time around it didnt do this but i got that error. so i will try again and see.

some advice would be greatly appreciated.

I Did It

Thank you very much for your excellent manual. I also have a 2xG4@500MHz and Im actually writing you this as one of the first things Im doing with Leopard.

I have just one question and Im wondering if this is also hapening to you.

Under Tiger I was able to do iChat videoconferencing but now with Leopard a message appears saying that "This computer does not support video conferencing" :(

Any workaround on this issue???

Without it I would feel like mmmm like mmmm like mmmm like if go to the street and forge my cell phone in my house (you know the feeling?)

Thanks a lot for any help,

Eloy

iChat in leopard more then likely has a few checks in it to not allow it with a certain set CPU speed.

... But I also got the same Kernel Panic on a Tray Loading iMac that has been upgraded with a DVD drive and a G4 processor… Any idea why it won't boot up from the DVD on that machine?

I suspect the problem might be with the iMac's graphics card. It seems Leopard is dependent upon Core Graphics, which require an AGP card. I'm wondering too about my B&W that's been upgraded to a G4. iMovie has been crabbing for months about my lack of an AGP card.... maybe the PCI graphics are the real reason that "Yikes" and everything below are excluded.

I see a whole lot of effort here, and I wonder if it's necessary. I installed Leopard on a 400 mhz PB (first one made), and I didn't go through any of this. Am I missing something? I am going to call the PB Target, and the iBook (900 mhz, Leopard) I used, Host. Here's what I did:

1. Put the Target in Target Mode, and connected to the Host
2. Started the Host, and inserted the Leopard disk
3. Ran the installer to the point where I selected the Target as the install volume.
4. Ran the installer, and restarted.

This started the Host, with the Target as the startup volume. I then selected the Host as startup, in the Startup Pane, hit restart, and pulled the firewire cable at the black screen. Restarted the Target (PB 400), and it runs perfectly.

I bet it WILL work on G3's upgraded with a G4 CPU upgrade card... ;-)

Anyone try it?! I am very curious...

ahhhh, let me say this again. no G3 system will run Leopard. everything was compiled for a G4 +. everything requires altvec. every test to try to boot a G3 with Leopard makes the system KP or freeze. this was tested with a external firewire drive with leopard installed to it, the same drive works just fine booting a 400mhz G4 GBE and a ton of other G4 macs. all of this info was posted here

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/371144/

scroll down a bit to mc68k post about the G3's tested. the reason why they did this is cause everything requires altvec meaning a G4 or above.

I would try upgrading to a Graphics card which is Core Image enabled...

Thanks suneohair. 10.5 is faster and more robust than tiger ever was on my g4imac 800. I just recorded 16 audio tracks and 10 instrument tracks with logic 8. Easy...felt like it could have done more.
One thing stopping me from using this as my main working OS is the sleep issue. On sleep...my screen fades to white then goes black then sleeps.
On wake all I get is a black screen. Only a reboot will bring it back.
I've tried reinstall, pram reset, permissions etc. No luck.
Could need a reinstall of nvidia geforce4 mx driver??
Any ideas anyone?

Would be cool if we could do this with the iPhone... ;-) Anyone find a way? I think we need to add USB Mass Storage support to the iPhone to enable this, right?

You can indeed. If you've cleaned off your hard drive (ipod), just use disk utility and place the image in the top field as the source. Then put your drive in the bottom destination field. When you restart, hold down the option key and select the drive you just imaged, it'll act like the cd -- only faster :)

*Note: Only works for firewire drives and ipods

What graphics card do you have?

what do you think a Yikes G4 is, its just a B&W with a G4 CPU and the ADB port removed in a different color case. it refused to boot the Leopard install disk i modded. but booted just fine on my DA. i should have took that first few lines out.
