i don't know how to view that file in the finder - aren't all the installers invisible unless you use the terminal.
How do I make them visible in the finder? (assuming that is what i need to do).
(Sorry if this is stupidly basic)
Firstly, if you had read the posts in this thread you would already have your answer. The answer is to not fool with all the monkey business associated with creating a modified OSInstall.mpkg file and simply download one ready to go, as in this one:
http://www.broadbandreports.com/r0/...2c6f2be47c4b7280666aff6/NewOSInstall.mpkg.zip
Next, as to your question about visible in the finder, again it was answered before in this thread. Here it is again: download TinkerTool and open it, then under the category of "Finder" check the check box that says "Show hidden and system files." At this point all the files you need will be visible. In the installer main window, first go to System, then Installation, then Packages, then you will find the OSInstall.mpkg file in which you need to throw the old one in the trash and insert the modified one that you download above (at the right time in the process). Keep in mind that you can't burn to a disc until you throw out the printer packages, foreign language packages (both in the same directory as the OSInstall.mpkg file), and the xcode tools under the "Optional Installs" folder in the main window of the installer (is not invisible). For more details of how to take a full size installer file of 6.66 GB and turn it into a burnable file of 4.2GB refer to my earlier post or follow the following steps taken verbatim from an InsanelyMac forum posting and add the step of changing out the OSInstall.mpkg file before you burn the "burn.sparseimage" file:
QUOTE
1. Mount the Original Leopard DMG (jus double click u idiot!!)
2. Open Disc Utility (under Applications -> Utilities)
3. Click on New Image (at the top u fool!!)
4. Name the image as dump (save on desktop!!)
5. Put the type as sparse image
6. Put the size as DL-DVD (8Gb), and click create
7. Mount dump.sparse
8. In disc utility, select the dump image and click the restore tab
9. Drag the mounted Mac OS X Install DVD to the Restore from field
10. Drag the mounted dump to the Restore to field (or equivalent)
11. Click Restore and wait.. (have some patience... ZEN...)
12. Once that is done, open up the dump mounted image
13. Remove the Developers Tools under Optional Installs
[NOTE: using TinkerTool makes step 14 obsolete, just go there in the Finder]
14. Use finder's Go to Folder option and navigate to /Volumes/dump/System
15. Go to Installation -> Packages
16. Proceed to remove anything that has Printer in it (u can always get from vendors)
17. Proceed to remove languages that you do not need (like french, german)
18. Verify in Disc Utility on the size of your dump (should be 4.3Gb or less)
19. Return to Disc Utility
20. Click on New Image
21. Name the image as burn (save on desktop!!)
22. Put the type as sparse image
23. Put the size as SL-DVD(4.7Gb), and click create
24. Select the burn image and click the restore tab
25. Drag the mounted dump to the Restore from field
26. Drag the mounted burn to the Restore to field (dont mix up!!!)
27. Click Restore and wait.. (have some patience... ZEN...)
[EDIT: swap OSInstall.mpkg file now by throwing first one in trash, emptying trash and then adding modified one to the same spot in the folder]
28. Once its done, burn it to DVD (in Tiger, not leopard)

Note also that when installing, you MUST hit "Options" then Archive and Install, and also hit the "Customize" button before hitting the final "Install" button and deselect the foreign languages, the x11, and the printers. Then hit Install and it will work.
