OK sorry if this has already been covered but I'm confused. I need the developer tools apparently, but the ADC download page only offers XCode 3.0 (which also apparently only works in Leopard).

I don't have my Dev. CD that came with my Mac. Is there somewhere I can get XCode 2? I got the OSInstall.mpkg file but don't know what to do with it (or if it even has anything to do with me).

EDIT: Nevermind, I found it here: https://connect.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MemberSite.woa/204/wo/bK3zhM6lLKkk2NwD1RJ1irIp6GM/0.0.17.2.1.3.0.1.2.1.1.0

Mhz g4 validation

Does 10.5 perform a hardware validation every time it starts up or opens an app?

The reason I ask: I have a 1.53 upgrade which lepoard will see as an 133Mhz machine, if I underclock the CPU to 1.463Ghz an whole number multiplication of the 133Mhz bus (ie 133Mhz x11 as opposed to 133Mhz x11.5=1.5295) Leopard, I am told, will see the machine as 1.47Ghz and install.

However, will it still work if I re clock the machine back to its native 1.53Ghz ie does Leopard perform a hardware validation ever time the machine is booted or an app such as DVD player is launched or just at the install stage?

If it performs a validation every time, I better follow your excellent instructions. Otherwise I might just be able to install without the hassle.

Thanks in advance,

Powers

just wonder.... why apple do this to macbook and imac...

var badMachines = ['MacBook3,1','iMac','PowerBook1,1',....

No Dice on GE G4

So I got this to work and install on my gigabit ethernet G4, but when it tries to boot up it shuts down (no error/KP, just turns off) right after the grey apple comes up. I'm thinking this could be one of the following things:
• Graphics card. I'm still running the stock Rage128 Pro. Anyone gotten this to work with a non-core graphics supported card? You would think I'd at least be able to boot the Rage128....
• Firmware upgrade. Just picked up this machine on CL and I doubt its been upgraded. Can someone report on whether applying this update is ness?

Has only gotten a GE to work at all? Seems a lot of people are having issues with sawtooths- anyone gotten those to work? Just to reiterate I am NOT seeing the no driver KP on my machine, just a cold shut down.
To make things a bit easier than paging through this thread, I've created a wiki to put knowledge on. Please put success/failure stories under the appropriate category for your machine. Here's the link:

Will keep you all posted. Thanks....

I tried to extract as much of the relevant info as I could onto the wiki. I'm still baffled as to why the DP GE's have no issues but the 400mhz is KPing. Going to try the firmware update...

Sawtooth with Dual 500Mhz? - Updated

So last night I made a bootable firewire drive of the install image. I used the Restore method from the Disk Utility app. The drive when plugged into my iBook g4 is seen and able to be booted. The Sawtooth does not even see the drive. I put the IDE drive in the Sawtooth and it does not even see it. Very strange. The system was all SCSI. Any thoughts?

the Geforce2 mx is a non Core graphics card and it works fine for me. and this person seems to have a GE G4 with a rage 128 in leopard running https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/371144/ altho the rage 128 only has 16mb vram so its going to have worse performance then my Geforce2 MX does. maybe you are having a hardware issue other then the video card

How the heck are you guys burning 7gb of data to a DVD?

Step 7: Burn it baby!
Now it is time to burn the image to a DVD. You can do one of two things, burn the sparseimage or make a read only cd master out of the image. I originally made a cdr image, but that didn't work too well. Burning the sparseimage worked best for me. Your mileage may vary. Note though, my DVD burner is a max 4x. Anyhow, try the sparseimage out, if that doesn't work try to make a read only image.

You can use diskutil to burn the image.

The sparse image I have created is 7.11gb. The original Mac OS X install disk image is 6.66gb.

How the heck do you burn these onto a DVD (max 4.6gb)?

If you guys all have Double Layer DVD burners, it would seem you would have the latest Intel models... in which case you wouldn't need to do this hack in the first place.

Anyone want to let me in on the secret? I tried burning to a regular DVD in toast (just to see what would happen) and of course I got a tracking error.

So, it's a simple question: How do you burn 7.11gb to a regular DVD?

Or is the hidden instruction (not listed): go buy a double layer DVD RW drive?

no u can't ... u hv to use dvd dl, i think you have 2 options

1. convert dmg to iso then burn it with any PC eqiupped with dvd dl recorder
2. restore(clone) your dmg to a USB HDD and install via target disk mode (hold option key before you turn on your mac)

actually i found out that using TDM is faster than using DVD

I'll refer you back to post #150 for your answer.

or you can say we upgraded the optical drive in the Mac. My G4 is far from a Intel Mac. i removed the stock drive and put my Pioneer DVR-110D in it. you dont have to have a intel Mac to have a drive capable of burning DVD DL.

no intel Mac needs Leopard installed with this mod, they are supported

O, thanks a lot; that patch together made it work for me;
the fiddling with the right c compiler didn't work out for me and I painstakingly downloaded xcode 3 and it seemed to not work on tiger after all; the patch was a godsend

and finally leopard managed to copy all of my preferences from another partition;
even preferences of third party software and hardware, without having to reinstall of re plugin anything; a dream come true.
I haven't tested everything yet til so far, but it seems to be a bit faster than tiger, even when indexing is still busy.

Thanks :) :apple:

iMac G4 700mhz, 512ram.

How do I change the sparceimage back to a regular .dmg? I've followed all the steps up until that one. Note: I'm gonna install from my firewire iPod.

i think you would do it the same way as you made the sparseimage from the .DMG. like mount the sparseimage and use what ever you used to make the image from the DMG.

I think it is but not in my case!! may be my macbook v1 is not an intel cpu (j/king) but actually it KP me for "Unable to find drivers for this Platform: ACPI" when i use the official DVD to install.

my config: macbook v1, C2D 1.83Ghz, Combo, 80G, 2G

weird rite?

You can indeed. If you've cleaned off your hard drive (ipod), just use disk utility and place the image in the top field as the source. Then put your drive in the bottom destination field. When you restart, hold down the option key and select the drive you just imaged, it'll act like the cd -- only faster :)

*Note: Only works for firewire drives and ipods

Everytime I try to do this it says "An error (16) occurred while copying. (Resource busy)" which it's not.

Dude, i was halfway dead when i posted that

what i ment to say was, Leroard does not need to be modded in anyway before it will install on a intel Mac, because they are all supported.

Software update?

Many thanks for the hack. But what will happen when you run Software Update for 10.5.1?

it will work the same, those blocks and limits was just on the installer (that is what the mod was for, to work around those blocks and limits for the installer to run to be able to install Leopard). there is no blocks or limits on the OS once it is installed ( unless its a G3 or a Yikes G4). so you have nothing to worry about.

Firstly, if you had read the posts in this thread you would already have your answer. The answer is to not fool with all the monkey business associated with creating a modified OSInstall.mpkg file and simply download one ready to go, as in this one:

http://www.broadbandreports.com/r0/...2c6f2be47c4b7280666aff6/NewOSInstall.mpkg.zip
yes I had already noticed that half way through the process - I would never have managed to create one myself.

Next, as to your question about visible in the finder, again it was answered before in this thread. Here it is again: download TinkerTool and open it, then under the category of "Finder" check the check box that says "Show hidden and system files." At this point all the files you need will be visible.

that seems to make everything in the finder grey - presumably that is normal?

In the installer main window, first go to System, then Installation, then Packages, then you will find the OSInstall.mpkg file in which you need to throw the old one in the trash and insert the modified one that you download above (at the right time in the process).

I'm using an external hard drive so thankfully the stuff about burning a dvd isn't important - i just made a sparseimage on teh extrenal hard drive using Carbon Copy Cloner. However, when I try to delete the .mpkg it won't allow me to do this. If I try to make it read/writable I get error code 195.

Any idea what i did wrong?

G4 Sawtooth working!

G4 Sawtooth working!:)

You need to add replace the following kext´s to get it to work:

Add:
AppleCore99PE.kext
AppleMLANAudio.kext

Replace:
AppleMPIC.kext
ApplePMU.kext

I´m using the kext´s from Leopard preview but I think you can also take them from Tiger! I also put this on the above mentioned wiki.

have fun

Did you do an Upgrade Install? I ask because I had the exact same issue on my friend's G4 (AGP Graphics) when I did an Upgrade Install. After a few attempts to start up I ended up doing an Archive and Install and it worked without a hitch. I'm not sure why this is, he didn't have much installed in Tiger but obviously it was something.

After a some struggles I finally got this to work. Thank you again for everything guys! Works nicely (as nice as Leopard could work on my old machine).

Also, is anyone else having this problem? My screen won't seem to turn off. Like the screensaver will come on, but when the times up and the screen is supposed to turn off, instead of turning off it just freezes and shows whatevers on the screen at the time. A simple mouse movement or keyboard click brings it back, but I was wondering if this was happening to anyone else, regardless if they're on a "Leopard-ready" Mac or not.

Sawtooth Update

I tried moving back to the single CPU in the box. No love. I still get the KP with the no driver for PowerMac3,1. Looks like a Sawtooth is out unless Xpostfacto figures it out.
