Thank you. The response.
This is my first MacBook:apple:. I won it from a colleague. I replaced the drive and the battery. And I'm already ML.

But now it's getting anyway ... and God help buying a Macbook pro.

thks

@mrazevedo: consider this Mavericks project dead, dead, dead. I don't think Wayne works on this any longer (he's a very young lad who seems to have found new & probably more exciting interests in life at the moment - can't blame him!) and his last appearance on this matter was... november 2013! After 9 or 10 months of complete silence, I think we can most certainly conclude that he's moved on since...

MLforAll seems to have continued on his own but has failed to meet success and things have been at a deadlock since the beginning of the year. Don't let your bear grow until success is met, unless you're ready to look like Panoramix!

Joking apart, I've long been saying it but I'll say it again, everyone should definitely abandon any hope of running Mavericks with graphics acceleration these old and obsolete GPUs (Intel GMA950/X3100, nVidia GeForce 7x00, ATI X1x00, etc) and therefore on those old Mac built on them.

At best, you've got ML with MLPF (or MCPF if that ever sees the light ) and that ain't too bad in itself!

Mavericks on Macbook mid 2007 2,1

There are directions that work for getting Mavericks on a Macbook mid 2007 2,1:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1661990/

See post 16

It doesn't work as well as ML Post Factor --- screen won't dim and can't wake Macbook from sleep. If you really need Mavericks and you have a Macbook 2,1 it might be an option.

Hi all!

So I gather that installing Mavericks on a polycarbonate iMac is really useless, which leaves Mountain Lion as an option. I know there is MLPostFactor, but user gpatpandp (and maybe others) have mentioned a way to use kext to get a working Mountain Lion system. Is this the way to go? Could someone give a pros and cons list of either method? Do both have graphics acceleration and are pretty stable? Thank you!

@RV-ABZ:

It's not useless to install Mavericks on a Macbook 2,1:

1. There is graphics acceleration. QE/CI doesn't work but that doesn't mean that there isn't any graphics acceleration. There's a big performance difference in video before and after installing the GMA950 kexts. After the GMA950 kexts are installed I can't tell a difference in graphics performance between ML for All and Mavericks on this Macbook 2,1.
2. If you measure the "usefulness" of an OS by it's eye candy we have different ways of evaluating. Eye candy is distracting for me so I shut that as much of that stuff off as I can.
3. If you want to program for IOS8 you are going to need XCode 6 and that requires Mavericks so installing Mavericks isn't useless for some of us. This was in fact my only motivation for doing this.
4. Why the hate?

Try these kext and let me know of they works.. I have a 3,1 macbook with x3100 gpu and I'm inetersted to have yosemite or at least a fully working mavericks in my macbook

I think using sfott for this mac is not the best thing to do since it is a 64bit boot.efi capable

Maverics installed on MacBook 4,1 Early 2008 (Black)

Hi guys,

I just want to share with you, I managed to install Maverics on MacBook 4,1 (MacBook Black Early 2008). It was quite pain in th *ss (I never "hack" OSX to install it on something else then supported apple computers).

GFX is slow, sound I dont care, I got 4GB RAM.

The thing is, my MacBook Pro Mid 2012 is broken (classic gfx card problem), and while they will fix it, I need to work...I got backup using TimeMachine, and of course I could transfer it just to another Maverics...so thats why I needed to install it...not really for using, just in case if needed...

would you mind trying the kext i've posted just before your post? It will be a very helpful thing to me :)

I can try it (well my keyboard just gone, but...). Anyway, how is proper procedure to do that and check if it is working ? I am really new in this.

Hi there
Could any of you kind people tell me if it's possible to install directly to OS 10.9.4 using SFOTT (1.4.4) from OS 10.6.8?

I'm getting stuck at the point when I try to drag Mavericks installer from the desktop into Sfott. I get the message "Error.. Installer does not match OSX Mavericks"

I don't have access to any earlier versions - 10.9.0/1/2/3

My 10.9.4 usb stick was made just today by a friend with a new machine. It's fully working, as he showed me on his machine when booting and holding the option key.

Im a total noob to Macs after 20 years on a PC. I picked up this Mac Pro 1,1 for next to nothing recently. Upgraded the cpu's to quadcores and the firmware to 2,1 successfully.

Kind regards Lou

Yes, you can create a 10.9.4 Install Medium with SFOTT under 10.6.8 (tested right now).

And no, you cannot simply drag'n'drop the Mavericks Installer onto SFOTT.

To make it easier, leave the Mavericks Installer in the location as it was downloaded from the App-Store: /Applications/Install OS X Mavericks.app.

Install and start the App-Script SFOTT.

It looks like an App, but basically it's a Terminal-Script. When the Terminal window has opened, do the 3) Settings (therein at least No. 2-5), choose the step-by-step mode in 4) and create the Install Medium.

Boot your Mac from the finished Install Medium and install Mavericks.

Please mind that the most GPU's on older Macs are not supported by Mavericks because of the lack of appropriate 64bit Kexts and therefore there's no graphics acceleration.

See this Thread for installing 10.10 Yosemite on a older Mac Pro (only this one), you can find a Guide in the link in this Post.

Got to say I finally installed mavericks today. I have a 24in iMac from 2009, 4gb ram, intel core 2 duo. I came from 10.7 did a clean install from my external, and man i'm pissed i didn't do this sooner. Granted all the bugs are probably worked out by now, but this is real smooth compared to before. Plus wiping the hard drive and starting over is always a plus as well.

Hi atvusr
Thanks for the kind reply. However...
;-)

To make it easier, leave the Mavericks Installer in the location as it was downloaded from the App-Store: /Applications/Install OS X Mavericks.app.

The Mavericks installer is on a USB drive a friend made. Being on 10.6.8 (SL) I'm sadly unable to download it to the Applications folder - or anywhere else. Apple won't allow it for Snow Leopard users.

I even tried copying it from the pen drive to the apps folder and then follow your advice. Sadly, no-go..

3) Settings (therein at least No. 2-5), choose the step-by-step mode in 4) and create the Install Medium.
Aye. Tried this too. Step by step method gave the error message again "Error.. Installer does not match OSX Mavericks" ****!

Please mind that the most GPU's on older Macs are not supported by Mavericks because of the lack of appropriate 64bit Kexts and therefore there's no graphics acceleration.
Yeps. I was ready for that one, at least! I have a bunch of GeForce cards here kicking around that I hope are going to do the business. The GT 210 seems a popular choice with the hackintoshers, and I've got one here.

Well, I'm going to try again with a version of Mountain Lion that I'm dowloading from, ermm.., a torrent site just to see how that goes. If you have any suggestions about the above first two points, please don't hesitate to reply.

Edit: Btw, I also tried a version of 10.9.0, acquired from the very same (fairly reputable - I think!!) torrent site, with no success when dragging the installer from the desktop or otherwise.

Thanks again

Thanks for the kind reply.

It's a little bit difficult to help, because it's hard to see from where the flaws come and the machine is not directly accessible.

When the Mavericks Installer is already on your USB-Flashdrive, try to select it in SFOTT as an alternative source (the /Applications path is the default source).

Or make a backup of any data on your Mac, make a clean Install of 10.6.8 Snow Leopard and try it all over again.

You could try to download the Mavericks Installer from the App-Store. It's not officially supported on a older Mac, but it works with the Download-Enabler (this one or this one). You can also do the SFOTT-steps manually, see the Guide in Post #914. Use the Guide.txt in the linked "Mac-Pro-Xserve.7z" for the Installation.

----UPDATE--SUCCESS!!----

ALRIGHT! Big thanks to Atvusr for his advice.
I did indeed do a fresh install of Snow Leopard. Thank heavens for "illegal" Torrent sites for hosting things like out of date OS's. I got it from Kickass.
One thing, When I installed it it asked me if I wanted to install Rosetta. This was unchecked. I checked it. No idea if this lead to the successful end result.
I then updated to 10.6.8 (the d/l was 10.6.5) from Apple Store.
Next up was to d/l Mavericks 10.9.0, again from Kickass. I decided to get this version first before trying 10.9.4. I ran Sfott and it created the boot USB perfectly. I followed this tutorial to the word (almost - he had launchpad on his Dock. ha!) and the drag and drop of the installer went flawlessly:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eF05shc-e2E
So. USB stick created I booted up from it.. NO! It just hung on selection. Tried different USB ports - same thing. Damn.
Oemden at Sfott suggested mounting on a separate internal Hdd and partition instead of a pendrive. So that was done, and now I sit here in front of my 1,1 Macpro, upgraded to 2,1 with 2xXEON 5355 cpu's (45 bucks on ebay) and OSX 10.9.0.
Surprisingly the graphics don't look too bad on the standard 7300GT, but it's not partcularly fast.
Guess finding a better GPU is the next to-do.

Edit. Just dropped a GeForce 210 in there and it works right away! No apple bootscreen but it works great!

Well. All in all I'm pretty delighted. My old mac lives again! Logic Pro X, here I come!

Massive thanks to Tiamo and Oemden. To atvusr, too for your help mate.

Rosetta is the emulation layer for Mac programs originally written for PowerPC based Macs to run now on Intel based Macs. 10.6 Snow Leopard was the last OS X which has supported Rosetta, more about it in Wikipedia. It has (unfortunately) nothing to do with the successfully installation of Mavericks via SFOTT.

By the way here a list of working Graphics Cards for Mac Pro 1,1/2,1.

As a next step it would be better to download 10.9.4 Mavericks from the App Store and doing again a fresh install of Mavericks - now you're already more familiar with it ....

Congratulations too, that Mavericks is now running fine on your machine. :)

It wasn't void of any hurdles or complications but what hack is. And I was remiss with my initial assertion of "perfection": never shall an OS X system work with Intel Wi-Fi (in this case Intel Wi-Fi Link 5100) but nothing that a few dollars and change "thumbnail" USB Wireless Adapter and it's compatible Ralink 10.9 Mavericks driver couldn't resolve. The biggest road block I faced was my own stubbornness in facing the fact that my E6400 just would not boot from an adjacent though separate FAT32 converted "EFI" partition and that the boot loader and Mavericks needed to reside simultaneously on the same partition. Once I came to terms with that reality and adjusted my blue print accordingly, the rest was fairly straightforward.
I found this thread and could use some help. My son wants a Macbook Pro but he's 15 and I don't want to drop 1k on it. I recently installed Mavericks on a Dell E6400/Core Duo 2 using the Tonyx86Mac instructions plus Multibeast for the drivers and that's where I'm running into some difficulty trying to figure out which ktexts?? will run the ethernet, dvd, sound and microphone. My wireless is fine which is why I'm able to post this. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have very "limited skills"

Hey atvusr

Yeah, I'd like to upgrade from 9.0 to 9.0.4. Mac store won't allow me to d/l it though, insisting it can't run on my system. So, once again, the friendly people at Kickass have provided and I have a version of it on a storage disk.
Oem at Oem's Den instructs that, if you haven't already patched an update with .1, .2, then you will surely have to if you want to go from .00 to .04
However, I'm confused by his instructions.
http://oemden.com/?p=791
What does he mean with point #2:
1) Get the latest release (1.4.2) of the Sfott script
2) Install it on your computer and install it on the Sfott key too (simpler – well more Mac friendly than from the script itself)

Thanks!

Hi!
Hmm. Dammit. Not getting anywhere now, trying to update from 10.9.0 :-(

I downloaded a copy of 10.9.4 and even mounted it on another drive using Disk Utility in its own properly-formatted partition and it gave itself the name of "OS X Base System"

I opened that volume and clicked on the Install Mavericks app icon therein. This opened a big prompt screen with the big X, telling me to click continue if I want to install OS Mavericks.

Clicking continue tells me my computer's eligibility will be verified with Apple - who subsequently tell me rather bluntly: OS MAVERICKS CANNOT BE INSTALLED ON THIS COMPUTER.

So. Following OEMDEN's instructions of "Let the Update run" simply isn't working for me on my copy (Kickass again) or when attempting to dl from App Store. I'm finding that whole set of instructions pretty tough going to follow. I know his native language isn't English, but I'm lost.

I had to download a copy of 10.9.4 from Kickass, as the App Store refused to serve me. Your suggestion of Parallel Desktop got me nowhere. I tried mounting 9.0 and 9.4 on it but PD just hung on a grey apple-logo bootup screen for hours.

I tried booting to the "OS X Base System" Volume/Partition by holding down the Option key after the welcome bong, but it just rebooted straight into the old desktop. If a choice of bootable drives was offered, I didn't see it with this GF210 GPU that doesn't show any boot graphics.

Finally, I fired up SFOTT and tried to figure it all out for myself. Ha! I'm in way over my head! Just when I thought I might be making some progress to becoming an iNerd..

Follow this thread/my guides within it. Mavericks/Yosemite it doesn't matter...the instructions work for both. I know you describe your skill set as "very limited" though remember with all things regarding ANY hack (PC or Mac), GOOGLE is your friend for any questions and/or need for greater detail explanation wise. We all start from a point of zero reference and initially struggle a bit. Maintaining your hack requires the ability to continuously be able to troubleshoot while solving your own issues, so understanding how it works by putting it together yourself is practically essential.

Good luck
