Try creating a new user account and see whether the problem persists.
If not you may try to delete (first rename) your /Users/~/Library/Cashes folder and/or your /Users/~/Library/Preferences folder.
If it's not solved I don't have any idea…

Unfortunately both doesn't help. What i do notice now is that when i drag a window up and down with the mouse it lags/ghosting..normally that means that i have no qe or ci?? And that that's the reason i see no icons/symbols? How do i enable it...i fixed permissions...

EDIT: I have found the fix...i changed name of the destination disk to ML .....all is now working fine!! Great job fellaz of the MLPostfactor i enjoy now 10.8.4

? about Tamo's EFI, SFOTT and ML on iMac 5,1

Hello Everyone,

This is my first post. I've been blown away with the work of many on ways to get older Macs running unsupported OS's. Amazing stuff. I have an iMac 5,1 with 4GB of RAM running Lion, and I'm thinking about going to Mountain Lion with it until MacPostFactor gets released when hopefully there will be some graphics support for my ATI x1600 GPU.

Anyhow... my question is this: I have been reading up about Chameleon as one method and tiamo's magic efi with SFOTT installation as an alternate method. I understand I can get ML installed with the Chameleon method, but in reading it seems that the tiamo/SFOTT install has less overhead and easier, in general.

Is it possible to use the tiamo/SFOTT method to install Mountain Lion onto my iMac 5,1 (intel2coreduo) or should I just stick with tried-and-true Chameleon? Tiamo/SFOTT seems more geared towwards Mavericks on unsupported hardware and not ML.

TIA! ;)

You shouldn't even concider using Chameleon. ;) It is _much_ slower due to it's need for BIOS emulation. Additional the hardware detection is worse and you may have troubles enabling audio... Also there are issues with apple's x1600 BIOS rom which may result in artefacts and system freezes if running OS X. (Somewhere months back I posted a image presenting the issue.

This is the long answer. The short one is: You should use the EFI way.*

*The only issues you'll have when going this way is, that you way not be able to update OS X via the AppStore, but have to use apple provided Delta/Combo updates. Also you sometimes have to re-replace the boot.efi file, as it get's overwritten by the updates. To do so you need to have another bootable drive laying around (if you don't mind using the terminal a recovery hd will be enougth).
As Mountain Lion properly won't get updates anymore this is not an issue at all.

Very strange... However it's great you could solve it.

Excellent. What is the video performance? OpenGL tests etc? I have exactly the same Mini (DIY upgrades... :))at home running Lion, maybe I'd give it a shot (as long as the video performance allows my XBMC to work in 1080p with the CrystalHD card)?

Well it seems to run alright on my 1080p display, but I've not found my iLife disc yet to run some video encodes etc.

What benchmarking software would you recommend to try?

Go for something utterly basic, even XBench would do (at least in the video section).
XBench only tests CPU, not GPU and therefore does not provide a reliable benchmark as far as graphics performance is concerned.

One should not expect much out of a GMA950 chip, it's totally obsolete now and not very powerful by today's standards.

Oh OK, won't do that one then, as it is the graphics performance I am most worried about - the Intel 950 wasn't the best back in its day...8 years later...

It wasn't, however the sole reason I keep my Mini 1,1 is that I've upgraded it to C2D 2.33 and a Broadcom CrystalHD, so my bigscreen XBMC experience is more than satisfactory on Lion. I just wonder if ML would break it, or if I can upgrade... The CrystalHD kext is 32-bit only...

Anyone had probs installing iLife '11 with this ML upgrade?

I've got the retail boxed version, worked fine when I ran SL, now it fails when installing. Error messages range from "missing component" to "package not available" to "checksum failed".

That's no problem at all, as the MLPF hack basically just makes ML to run with a 32bit kernel to guarantee compatibility to those old machines. Saying this it means that concerning the driver layout it should work although it might not due to other incompatibilities. The only way to find out is trying.

Anyway the CrystallHD should work with stock ML, too (check the web), as there are not only kext drivers but also userspace ones, which are available as dylib files and so should work with any (32bit ?) software.

Perhaps I am a little confused, however might I know what use MLPostFactor provides to the general unsupported mac world any longer ? With a graphics card upgrade and Tiamos's boot.efi, any unsupported Mac Pro can run the current (10.9.1) OS X version. Any ATI X1600 mac can run Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.5 in 64 bit mode with the appropriate kexts files, both the patched Open GL/CL frameworks and the same Tiamo's boot.efi. As I do not own a mac that possess either the GMA 950 or X3100 inboard graphics, are these the only two candidates mac wise that cannot run Mountain Lion without MLPostFactor ?

Yep. But as a whole lot of MacBooks, Mac mini's and even iMac's have those onboard graphics, it concern a great deal of users. I'd say there are a lot more of those then mentioned Mac Pro's or iMac's (though the last group is probably more adventurous with this).

Too bad this project has died some time ago. Even the special website is down (404), not even an upgrade of MLPF to support 10.8.5

Too bad....

SMB temporary solution

Hello! First of all, thanks to HackerWayne for creating this amazing tool.

Thanks to MLPostFactor my early-2008 :apple: Macbook Black has acquired over years of life. Sorry for my english, I'm from Argentina. ;)

I installed OS X 10.8.5 using 10.8.4 MLPostFactor config and I found a temporary solution to the SMB problem. Using muCommander can access the Windows network: copy, move, etc... by typing "smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/" just like in Finder.

See the screenshot.

I hope my contribution helps others with the same problem.

Saludos!!!

Security Update 2014-001 (Mountain Lion)

I'm using MLPostfactor for some time now on my iMac 5,1 model. Working perfectly!

I wonder if todays security update can be installed without problems?
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1729
Does anyone know if it breaks MLPostfactor or can it be installed without troubles?

Personally, as you and or anyone else with an unsupported Mac and ATI X1600 graphics can run Mountain Lion OS X 10.8.5 in 64 bit mode with the appropriate kexts files, both the patched Open GL/CL frameworks and Tiamo's boot.efi, I would completely get rid of MLPostFactor as it runs OS X 10.8 in 32 bit mode, is unnecessary/not needed, and seemingly is no longer even being developed.

The Mountain Lion 2014-001 Security Update WILL BRICK YOUR CURRENT SYSTEM as it replaces both the ATISupport.kext and the ATIFramebuffer.kext as well as the patched OpenCL.framework folder.

As I am not entirely certain where exactly those files are located in a MLPostfactor, 10.8 system, I would not install the update if you do not know where those items are located either.

The problem with not installing the update however is that I believe the security update was issued due to the fact that OS X 10.8.5 was also severely crippled by the SSL bug as OS X 10.9 - 10.9.1 had been, so without the update your are leaving your OS X system dangerously vulnerable to attack.

If I were you, I would abandon your current MLPostfactor system and reinstall OS X 10.8.5 without it. In order to do so, you will either need another OS X partition or Mac so that you will be able to replace the original system kext/framework files with the appropriate ones as I have mentioned before.

In my case (early-2008 Macbook) the Security Update 2014-001 (Mountain Lion) installed without problems. All works fine.

As I believe your inboard graphics is Intel GMA X3100, my understanding is that the option to run OS X 10.8 without MLPostfactor is not possible in your case so my advice earlier would not be applicable.

I went to the app store and purchased the ML app. I could not download it, I get a message saying my computer is not supported. Is there some way of getting the app store to allow me to download the mountain lion installer ? Using a mac mini 2007 .

I didn't mention before: I have OS X version 10.8.4 (on MLPostfactor)
is this version also vulnerable to the SSL bug?

Another question; My MLPostFactor installation was much faster than my previous 10.7.(Lion) installation. Your suggestion to reinstall to a fully 64 bit on this machine, I wonder if this slows down the performance?

(edit)
I have been searching for those 'appropriate kexts files' , patched Open GL/CL frameworks and Tiamo's boot.efi. So far I could only find Tiamo's boot.efi in a Mavericks post.
So now rest the X1600 (0x71c5) kexts and Open GL/CL ...

and... I rather continue this discussion in a non-MLPF thread, should I start a new one or can anyone suggest one to follow...
