Good news.
Quick question, my father has got an old iMac from late 2006 (on which I installed ML already by using MLPF) with the following specs:

Intel C2D
3 GB Ram
GeForce 7600 GT

Wikipedia says the video card is 64 Bit. So would it work with MacPostFactor (Mavericks, or Yosemite in the future) as well? You only talk about the Mac Pro, so I'm not sure about his iMac...
nVidia GeForce 7xxx are not supported in 64bit OS X versions. Your best shot for full graphics support on that old iMac remains 32bit mode ML.

What do I need to add to the Install OS X Mountain Lion.app from the Mac OS X Install ESD disk image in order to make MacPostFactor recognize it as an OS X installation app when dropped into the Applications folder?

uploaded to where?

Some of it is here: https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/20525246/

I'll dig around some more, might update the link a few times. Since that post is from around christmas, not Jan 4th.

If you just want to install Mountain Lion on one of the older MacBooks, MLPostFactor probably works better: http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/MLPostFactor.shtml

Can some one explain why use macpostfactor instead of MLPF.
Do the people that already have a working MLPF install, will gain anything if they reinstall with macpostfactor?

Not sure about that but maybe there are a few bug fixes, like some people (including me once) were having iMessage/Facetime issues, or bluetooth didn't work properly.
Although there are ways to fix these manually (like I did), MacPostFactor might prevent these right from the start.

So no, people who have a perfectly running system now don't have to redo all the stuff.

Regarding Mountain Lion, that new MacPostFactor (v0.2b1) is supposed to be the UberGod of all OS X installers and fix those bugs that remained in MLPF (eg: lack of connection to SMB servers, Bluetooth niggles). However, according to posted users feedback, it appears to be more buggy than MLPF at the moment! Oops

There are reports on the guru's Twitter account from unlucky people who tried it but ended up with non-bootable systems. Did someone write about "private BetaTesters" ? :D

https://twitter.com/Wayne_819/status/548167463796355072

An updated version v0.2b2 is supposed to be coming soon or be uploaded somewhere (since the 4th of jan), you know, the usual... It seems you'd be better off sticking with your current MLPF installation for the time being.

All in all, it would probably be very useful if the guru would detail or list the files or kexts to replace on an existing MLPF installation to fix those bugs (maybe with a script), rather than proceed with a total re-installation. In other words: a "patch"...

Nothing to be done. You need the actual original ML installation application, i.e. the container of that ESD image. Otherwise, the MLPF or MPF installer considers (fairly genuinely so) that it is in the presence of a pirate copy of ML. Read page #1 of this thread...

Success on macmini 2.1

Hello,
I 've successfully installed ML on my macmini 2.1 f(2.0 ghz Core2duo, 4Go RAM) from 10.7.5 with Macpostfactor 0.2b1.
Everything was ok during the install except the Info5 (newer OS alert). I was obliged to put an external HDD. I checked the GMA fix too.

Finally, I've a ML with no recognized gma950.
Then I've installed the 5 kexts for gma950 (from Hack_ML.zip) with Kextutility. The material is ok in System info (Intel GMA 950 64 mb) but there is still no graphic acceleration (tested on ibooks author)

Any ideas ?

Thanks for your help.

Did you check your kernel mode through Terminal command uname -a? Obviously you need (and should be) in 32bit mode: "i386". If you are, DVDPlayer is an excellent tool to verify graphics acceleration (Help->Show Supported Features). Because... iBooks Author? on ML? Are you sure?

Unless it's Mavericks (or Yosemite) you installed, in which case forget it. There's no and never will be any graphics support for those obsolete Intel GMA chips in 64bit kernel mode (sole official OS X mode since ML).

If it's ML indeed, then I guess it's probably a major bug in that v0.2b1...

Ask the guru…

If I were you, I'd stick to known working solutions that have been going on for a while. Unless you like to be teased for years of course...

Greetings all,

I've installed MLPF v 0.3, and I followed the instructions over at osxhackers.tk. After I boot into Mountain Lion post-install, I just get the Apple screen with the spinning circle under the apple. I tried installing 10.8.4, and then 10.8.0 (just for curiousity's sake), and it makes no difference. I do have a legit installer from the App Store, but is there something else I need to do additional? I've read that this only works for 10.8.3, but MLPF v 0.3 has an option for 10.8.4 (????).

I have (or I should say I am working on) an iMac 4,1 (with the 5,1 flash), C2D, currently has 10.7.5, and an x1600 video card. All the research I've seen says it can work with this machine, but do I still have to change the PlatformSupport.plist file like I did in Lion to make that work?

I also noticed that, when installing, I have to physically shut off the system for it to restart. I don't have a problem restarting or shutting down in Lion, but I just wanted to state that if any of these issues are related.

Looking forward to hear back and test some things.

Thanks!

Did you run the MLPostFactor.app pre install and then (again before booting up) post install via the install/boot usb drive?

Did you use a chip drive? There is a bug if you use a usb hard drive.
I did 10.8.4 (app) and then updated to ...5. Yes restart bombs out.

Thanks for the reply. I did the pre- and post-install MLPF procedure. I will try and install without an external HDD and post back the results.

Thanks!

Ok, so I successfully installed 10.8.4 :)! It was the external HDD method for installing that was the culprit. Shout-out to MLforAll and HackerWayne for developing this tool!

I have one question - how in the world did you guys upgrade to 10.8.5? I did software update through the App Store (as I think in 10.8 forward updates were solely through the App Store), and it gave me some basic updates (like iTunes, etc.) but not 10.8.5. I tried to download the combo update from Apple from their support website direct, but it came time for the install it gave me some flak about Java and can't install 10.8.5 on the HDD. I didn't do anything with Java yet as I was just trying to see if this process works.

Any advice on getting to 10.8.5?

Thanks!

Success installing OS 10.8

I was able to successfully install Mountain Lion 10.8 on my early 2007 MacMini using MLPostfactor v3.0

The most difficult part was figuring out how to download 10.8 from the App store onto a computer that doesn't let me download it. My work around was to download the OS 10.8 installer on my work computer and then copy it to the MacMini.

Also I did not read the instructions carefully and did not not follow the step to reboot to the Install drive a second time and launch MLPostfactor from the Utility Menu. Once I did that, I was able to restart on the ML partition and it worked beautifully.

Thanks for all of the great info on this thread!

I will give it if you ask again:). But don't upgrade, 8.4 works best. I had to downgrade. I read many recent post about staying on. 4, in this thread.

Here is a post on upping https://forums.macrumors.com/posts/20254492/
I did the 8.5 combo which is all around the net and many things like diskmaker X bombed.

Turn on your PMs. When I click on your username there is no PM option.

Sorry Mavericks not ML.

I turned it on. I have no clue how to get the .app Mountain Lion.

I'd run Mavericks, but I don't wanna deal with the bugs and no hardware video support.

But that leads me to another question. If the macbook is only used for watching dvd's, netflix, spotify, word processing, and internet/email, is it worth it to install Yosemite on it even with the hardware video support missing?

I used the official 10.8.5 installer right from the start, that's why I didn't have to update through the App Store.

Anyway, have you ever checked the system profiler ('About this Mac')?
You should see something like '10.8.4 MLPostFactor', which can not be recognized by the App Store (it seems that the App Store checks the system profiler to determine whether there's an update or not). Once you've changed it back to the correct versioning '10.8.4', the App Store will come up with the 10.8.5 update.

Go to /System/Library/CoreServices and copy "SystemVersion.plist" to your desktop.
Open it with a text editor and change every '10.8.4 MLPostFactor' to '10.8.4'. Save the file, drag it back to /CoreServices, type in your password and overwrite the old one.

You might have to re-run MLPF afterwards.

How on earth am I supposed to get the MAC store version of OS X Mountain Lion ?

The only one I have access to is the one that creates the desktop MAC OS X INSTALL ESD that has "Install OS X Mountain Lion.app" "library" folder - "packages" folder - and "system" folder.
