I have some serious insights here:

1. Apple will announce new iPhones in the fall. The Pro series will have new A17 bionic chip and will be based on TSMC 3NM production.

2. The iPhones will come in similar sizes to those of the 14 series and may, or may not, get a 10% increase in size which may, or may not, be limited to the Pro series.

3. Apple will announce a new M3 chipset in 2024 that is based on 3NM technology or 4NM technology or 5NM technology.

4. New updates to the iMac and MacBook Pro models will come out in late 2023 or early 2024 or mid-2024 or late 2024.

5. Apple will either cancel or not cancel the Mac Pro due to less than, or greater than, expected sales numbers.

6. Apple will cancel the Mac Studio as it is redundant to the higher priced MacPro. Apple may also decide to keep the Mac Studio as it is a less expensive option for Pro users.

Umm OK, isn't that how it works?

When iPhone 15 is announced this year, they will already be close to finalising iPhone 16's features etc.

The M3 Macs have probably been baked for a while - they are just waiting for TMSC to be able to produce these chips at scale.

With nearly every product that you buy from Apple, they are already planning the next one.

Precisely why I'm waiting on buying a 15 MBA. The M3 15 MBA will be here in less than 12 months.

I don’t understand why. The new model cars get released every year but it doesn’t piss off someone that just bought last year’s model. New iPhones get released every year.

I don’t understand why some people feel that they have to have the current iPhone, car, MacBook etc. Just because the new model came out doesn’t mean the old model magically self-destructs.

At some point you’re old model is going to break or just become outdated. When that happens, it’s great that updates are frequent. Imagine buying a 2020 MacBook Air in 2024 when they wait five years to release a new models. You just bought a computer designed four years ago because you needed it. Now imagine in that same scenario you bought a 2023 MacBook in 2024 when they wait two years. You bought a computer that is only a year old in design.
Follow the MBA 15" threads and ask them that question in Q1 2024.

I've had that experience when Apple insisted on announcing the late 2012 iMac in Oct 2012 but deliver it by Feb 2013 then introducing the late 2013 iMac 7 months later.

If Apple wanted to make it right... delay product introduction by 1 week of ability to actially ship like what they're doing with the MBA 15" M2.

For my iMac it means moving the release of the late 2012 to early 2013 or mid 2013.

If a MBA 15" M3 were to come out by Q1 2024 it will piss off a lot of 2023 owners who bought a little over 6 months earlier.
Moving forward it's in their best interest to update both Airs at the same time, and Apple isn't going to update the laptops in less than a year. So early next year for the M3 MBPs and later next year for the M3 MBAs.

You realize that the M4 MacBook Air will be here in less than 24 months and the M5 should be here in less than 36 months.

If you need a computer now and you’re using a slower Intel model, then I would upgrade. If you’re on anything with Apple Silicon, then it’s really hard to justify an upgrade. 3 to 5 years is pretty much the upgrade cycle for a MacBook. Three years meaning you need to have the latest.

I got crucified in another thread when I said I'm waiting for the M3 15MBA. People said, "why not just hold out for the M4 or M5 then?"

But people don't seen to get the big draw of the M3 is NOT just more power, but the main draw is a much more power-efficient chip, which can bring about an up to 25% battery life improvement over the M2 chip. This is because the M3 is a 3nm chip and the M2 is a 5nm. (M4 and M5 will also be 3nm, so the battery life improvement won't be as great as from M2 to M3).

M3 15MBA is the one to get.

Appel isn't going to cancel the Studio because that would be too great of a price jumbo between the Mini and Pro.

The only Mac without a M2 refresh are the over 2yo 2021 iMac 24" M1 & the nearly 3yo 2020 iMac 27" Intel.

In 2 months, 11 days from now would be the 25th anniversary release of the 1st iMac, the iMac G3.
Yeah and iMacs generally go longer without a refresh of any kind. Macbook Pros generally don't go that long, do they? I'm sure somebody keeps track of these things, I'm just not that somebody lol

I get the thinking that if you wait for the next new tech you'll be waiting forever but the M2 is "old". The first M2 product came out about a year ago.

I don't blame anyone, at this point, for waiting on M3 devices. The M2 is a great chip and I'm sure many people will be happy with it but I'm waiting for M3. I know that it'll soon be replaced by M4 but I want to at least maximise the time I have a "new" product.

Even if you have an M1 product you probably won't want to upgrade until M4 as long as it meets your needs. Buy the product that meets your needs and stop worrying about getting the latest new product.

While I am waiting for an M3 it's only because if I buy a Mac it'll be a secondary device as I have a powerful PC. I have no doubt that if I bought an M2 15" Air it would last me a long time but I can easily wait for an M3 refresh. If you need a laptop now then get an M2.

I agree but keep the annual refresh to approx 12 months like the iPhones and not half year.

Historically iMacs at most have a 2yr refresh cycle.

All the MBP have M2, M2 Pro and M2 Max already.

3nm M3 will likely be out Q1 2024.

Will Apple release a M2 Ultra for the MBP 16"? Do they have excess supply of the chip SKU?

In Q1 2024 people will be talking about how disappointed they are with M3 and they should wait for M4

That’s a decade ago with Intel chips. I know they were having problems with the Intel upgrade cycle. With Apple Silicon I think people forgot about the Intel upgrade cycle. It wasn’t every year. I am not aware of the specific issue with this iMac.

If Apple wanted to make it right... delay product introduction by 1 week of ability to actially ship like what they're doing with the MBA 15" M2.
Delay the 15 inch MacBook Air for a week? You think that if they did that they could come out with M3? They put whatever processor design in the iPhone first then he gets down to the Mac. I don’t think October is in a week.

For my iMac it means moving the release of the late 2012 to early 2013 or mid 2013.
I don’t think it makes sense to say Apple did this a decade ago with Intel processors so this relates to what’s going on now. There’s not going to be a big enough jump between M2 and M3 for most users to say M2 has become unusable and I need to replace it. This isn’t going to be like the change from Intel to Apple Silicon where there was a significant difference in performance. I couldn’t imagine buying an Intel MacBook Air right before Apple Silicon came out.

Apple is already developing 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models with the M3 chip, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. In his Power On newsletter today, Gurman said he expects the updated laptops to be released in 2024.

The current 13-inch MacBook Air was announced in June 2022, while the 15-inch model was introduced last week. Both models are currently powered by the M2 chip, manufactured based on TSMC's 5nm process. The M3 chip is expected to be built on TSMC's 3nm process, resulting in significant performance and power efficiency improvements. Gurman said the M3 chip should have similar CPU and GPU core counts as the M2 chip.

Priced starting at $1,299, the 15-inch MacBook Air's primary differences compared to the 13-inch model are a larger display and six speakers instead of four. Apple says the laptops have equal battery life, and they share the same overall design. For a more detailed comparison, read our 13-inch vs. 15-inch MacBook Air Buyer's Guide.

Gurman reiterated that new iMac and 13-inch MacBook Pro models with the M3 chip are also in development. He expects the new iMac to launch by early next year with a similar design as the current model from 2020, which still has an M1 chip.

The 15-inch MacBook Air can be ordered now and launches this Tuesday.

Does anyone know if m3 chip guarantees dual monitor functionality? Or TBD?
