I too had mine swapped due to poor battery performance.

Had a 3g and the way I use it (or don't) I could get a week of battery life. Useing the 3GS the same way, I was lucky to get 2, maybe 3 days. Tech plugged into their computer and agreed there was a problem with battery. Swapped out for a new one - but it was in the plain white box. Can't be a refurb - not yet - can it?

Doubt it.. they send the Apple stores oem boxes of all their stuff for direct swaps.. They come already sealed up their nifty plastic adhesive things.. I got a brand new iPod 160gb when mine stopped charging and it was also in a white box behind the Genius Desk in a drawer.

Let us know how your new one's battery is...

Really?

So is Apple trying to purposely ruin my battery?

From their web site:

http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html

Congratulations.

The plethora of very intricate and detailed guides on here when everyone was freaking out about the 3G's battery all said not to run the battery down to shut off. Thats what I followed and I had great battery life as did those who followed those methods. Also 'hurt' and 'ruin' mean completely different things so no, Apple isnt trying to 'ruin' your battery.

Most said not to do it all the time.

But to do it once a month to calibrate the battery.

That is what this thread said to do: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/525741/

And that is also what the Apple site says.

I was actually being sarcastic as I think Apple has it right.

My 3GS is at:
Usage - 2 Hours 58 Minutes
Standby - 8 Hours 13 Minutes
Took it off the charger today around 11am. It's almost 8pm. I'm at 38% battery.

Sounds alright to me I guess. I've played some 3D games, texted, emailed, couple calls, some internet usage.

I'm at 3:42 usage, 8:43 standby. 15 percent battery left.

I listened to most of the Braves and Yankees streaming over 3G, which I'm sure is what sucked most of the battery. I turned off WiFi when not in use and location services, which has gotten me a little more life than yesterday. I also didn't use my bluetooth headset for audio, which also probably figured into this.

At almost 4 hours of use on 3G in the first couple of battery cycles, that sounds right with "up to 5 hours of battery" on 3G. I hope people now understand why Apple didn't include 3G on the original iPhone.

my usage this period was basically a couple of long phone calls and then some email/texting/surfing. Prolly included about an hour of ipod listening. all on 3g and wifi.

I assume streaming audio will drain the battery a lot quicker since it's constantly downloading data. If I'm looking at a Web page, it gets downloaded to memory and the the connection is pretty idle. My battery life did tick up today, but that was probably from turning off WiFi, GPS and Bluetooth.

pandora and the likes absolutely kill battery life. so do gps tracking type programs. i have BT turned off as well as the irritating ask to join every wireless network I pass.

I'm seeing pretty good battery life, 3 hours 58 minutes of use and 1 day 10 hours of standby, i'm at 28%.

from various reports from people, it looks like some 3GS actually do have defect batteries, and the percentage is not trivial at all.

I will swap mine due to very obvious battery performance difference than my 3G, and would highly recommend all of you experiencing the same problem go to apple store and raise your complain. That way Apple might take action to either publicly admit and recall certain batch, and could improve future product quality.
not that we care about Apple, but we care about money paid :D

It is fairly common in a mass produced item for some of them to have defects that get past inspection, not just the iPhone but all products. That is why we have a warranty.

Here are my numbers right now. Yesterday I ran it dead and then charged via power cable. Not great, but not to bad.

Usage: 4hrs, 16 min
Standby: 18hrs, 27min
Battery: 13%

Here's my stats as of now.

Usage: 6H, 44M
Standby: 8H, 24M

On:
Wifi
3G
Location

Off:
Bluetooth

I've been listening to music for a good 6 hours at least. Been on facebook, app store, fml app and some others. Played a game for a bit.

I'm currently at 61%

Screen Brightness is about 1/5.

Went to the local iPhone store today and they're swapping my 32gb 3GS out...sadly, they had no replacements available in the store, but expected to have some in tomorrow. Regardless, he processed the order and I just need to walk in and do the swap when it arrives.

I explained to him everything I've done including full restore x2 with setup as a new iphone, multiple battery cyclings, disabling of push and all battery draining possibilities, etc. He said they've had "several" similar complaints--whatever that means.

I unplugged my iphone at 10am this morning and walked up to the genius bar at 2pm with 12% battery left after light use this afternoon...

I'll report back after a few days with my new iphone tomorrow.

I'm happy. And I haven't done the whole 'discharge fully calibration' thingie yet either. Only thing off is push notifications. Played several games on it and showed off the Map tool to a bunch of interested folks. Watched some trailers. Cruised AP News, Reuters, Facebook, etc.

That's admirable.

Just done 2 calibrations (completely died) in the past 2 days...feeling that it's worse than my previous 3G....

That looks about right to me. You've done better than I ever have (3G or 3G S).
