It is fine, I have been at a location all day where there are very high powered electro-magnets near by, they ruin my signal, so all day it has been searching for signal and keeps losing it every few seconds. My battery is usually better than that.

Also ur backlight proly is brighter setting

Owned mine for a few days now...

Usage 4 hours 22 minutes
45% Battery left
Stand by 22 hours 15 minutes

Not bad :)

2 days later...it says i plugged it in even though i don't remember ever doing so. *Shrugs*

Normal ????

Here is a sample of my battery life after 2 conditions one every two weeks.

I only plugged it in the sync cable to sync my contacts in for like 30 seconds

Yawn what is the obsession with swapping phones here? You had 4 3G iphones too, i suppose all those were faulty?

My 3G does not have a problem till now since day 1 when I got it.. probably all the OP got were lemons

What do u guys think of this?

Usage: 5hrs, 25min
Standby: 1 Day, 8hrs

Wifi ON for when I'm in range
3G ON
PUSH MobileMe
PUSH BeeJiveIM
Location Services ON
Bluetooth OFF
Brightness @ default, AUTO ON.

Here is mine from last night. This is (my second) 3GS

usage: 1h 37 mins standby 8h 57 mins 11 mins of talk time 36%

checked on it a 30 mins later, yes 30 mins. It was asleep and no apps were running:

usage: 1h 44 mins standby 9h 40 mins 11 mins of talk time 29% ??

Woke up this morning and phone was completely dead. plugged it into computer and it took 45 mins to have enough charge to turn on the phone. What the hell. I had same issues with my first 3GS. My old iphone lasted WAY longer. At to this all sorts of other issues and I am at the point I might try and return it and just go back to my old 1st gen iphone. Apple has not been much help.

  1. Out of the box, I'm guessing that a 3GS needs to have the battery meter recalibrated (via one full charge/discharge cycle, which you seem to have done :D ). Don't expect the meter to be all that accurate before that.

  2. That said, your battery lifetime isn't all that inconsistent with other peoples' experiences. And, I'll go even farther and guess that you only have 2-3 bars or less of signal: fewer bars == shorter battery life. My 3GS spends most of its time in an area with 0-2 bars, and I tend to get, oh, maybe 12 hours or less before the meter hits 10-20% (note that most of the people here who report long battery lifetimes appear to be getting 5 bars). I've now started to charge the phone in the middle of the day.

  3. Your old 2G iPhone didn't use the power-sucking 3G. For a better apples-to-apples comparison :D , turn off 3G on the 3GS.

Can anyone give me some advice?
I have the 16Gb iPhone 3GS and the battery life in the last week or so has been terrible. My 3G is off, Bluetooth is off, location services are off, although I'm not sure if any of my apps are draining it even when I'm not using them?
I have restarted the handset, restored the factory settings and reinstalled my data from the backup through iTunes, run the battery down to 4%, when it shut itself off and then charged it up fully whilst running a downloaded a Battery Doctor application. Yet today, these are my stats:

Since last full charge -

Usage: 1hr 27mins
Standby: 7hrs 49mins

Batt: 20%

I just got the warning as I sent this, it's gone down 10% in the last couple of minutes!! It seems I'm getting ridiculously little usage out of my phone at this point. The only thing I've used it for today is texting, I've sent/received maybe around 30-40 in total? However, in the past, I would check Facebook incessantly, text constantly, use Safari as often as I felt like and download music on iTunes, yet now I don't think it would be viable without needing several charges throughout the day.
Any advice?

everyones will vary depending on what they use it for. If people usage cosists of just texting and stanby, the phone will last much longer then someone who plays games and surfs the web on theirs.

Dont use this thread as a benchmark to see how yours compares. I could get a few days out of mine if i just texted and made the occasional call. But i would get less then a day out of it if i surfed the web and played games for hours.

I would try out a new restore instead of using your backup. It could be a corrupt program running on your backup. If that doesn't work then its off to apple world.

Extreme use:
5 hours Usage
13 hours Standby

Average use:
9 hours Usage
29 hours standby

Several 3GS later. I'm very pleased.

2 hours, 17 minutes usage
7 hours, 41 minutes stand by

65% left, bluetooth off, location services on, push notifications on, 3g on

Almost all the usage has been web browsing and about 80 text messages.

Overall that seems normal to me

Battery life seems completely random. My wife has a 3G. She can go 10 hours at work on a given day and it's down to 70%. The next day, she can pull out the phone and it has shut itself down and won't start until a charge hits it - less than 10% power left. We bought her a Mophie Air over the holidays and that's nice - if she catches it before it goes down below 10%. It's frustrating not to be able to tell what an "average day" will bring.

My 3GS is not much better. This morning, I went and worked out for 65 minutes - had my phone sitting next to the side with nothing happening. It was fully charged - 100% before I left. When I picked it back up, it was really hot and I looked - it was down to 69% after just 65 minutes. I rebooted it - then did a couple of errands and ran with the Nike+ sensor for 70 minutes - and it was only down to 65%. Go figure. Some days, I can go four hours, checking e-mail, making a few calls, etc. and it's down to 90%. Other days, I can do nothing for four hours - e.g. it's in a locker just with a 15 minute fetch, and it will go down 50%.

I can deal with poor battery life - I just want some understanding of the completely non-deterministic behavior. This was made SO much worse after 3.1 and 3.1.2. Before updating to 3.1, I could reliably expect to go 8 hours and only go down 20 or 30%. Now, I can't depend on anything besides having a charger with me.

Mine:

Usage: 5 hours, 20 minutes
Standby: 3 days, 14 hours

Type of usage: Approximately 1.5 hours of video, exploring the apps and the phone for a bit~, didn't surf at all.

Phone: put at lowest brightness, off push, off 3G, wireless on

connected to the computer a few times sometimes up to 10-15 minutes... (meaning that it has charged a bit)

Seems like it isn't very good huh considering I didn't surf and I did charge a bit here and there?

forgot to mention, my batt was about 20 percent when i posted this

I have a 3GS.

Usage: 7 hours, 21 minutes.
Stand by: 21 hours, 30 minutes.

44% battery life. My usage is some web surfing, some app store, facebook, twitter, a few games and listening to music, one call and a bit of texting. I keep my brightness at about 1/3 with the auto-brightness on. Wifi, 3G, and Push Notifications are on.

So far, I've been pretty impressed by the 3GS battery compared to my old Palm Pre. What do you guys think?

Usage: 4hrs, 3 min
Standby: 18 Hrs, 42 min

Battery remaining: 16%

Brightness - 50%
Wifi - OFF
Bluetooth - ON for a 20 minute call, OFF for the rest of the time
Location Services - ON
Beejive push - ON
Google Exchange Push (mail, contacts, calendar) - ON

Usage throughout the day was mostly 3G web browsing, watched a 20 minute TV show, sent a bunch of SMS and Beejive IM messages (maybe 100 total), downloaded a few apps over 3G, and made about 30 minutes of calls (20 of which were over a bluetooth headset).
