Who here is a weirdo like me who was most excited for this new Mac Mini?
Me. I preordered a M4 Pro with a few bells and whistles. Honestly, people are right, it'll be just like the lappy, put it into sleep mode and you should be okay. Hard powering is a rarity these days anyway.

I know people mock this but I used to think it was stupid and someone on this board made a very reasonable post on why it is 100% intentional. Many people haven't used wireless mice and having the charge port in any place that might allow it to be used while charging would be confusing. So the most impossible charging cable location for charging and using it is the bottom. Apple 100% knows what they are doing and you might not like it but it's not a mistake or oversight. It is working as intended.
They indeed know what they are doing with the charging port on the bottom: it’s to prevent people from using the mouse wired. To Apple the customers aren’t users, they are breathing advertisements. Take the Apple logo which looks upside down to the user when they close the laptop, but looks the right side up to all people looking at the user with the laptop open while they’re sitting in a coffeeshop. Similar thing with the mouse: if you allow people to work with the cable attached, they will. A percentage will even just always keep it plugged in so they don’t have to think about charging. But then people will look at users with MacBooks and see a wriggly or perhaps annoying cable and Apple can’t have those associations with their products. So they simply prevent you from using the mouse with the cable attached. Now every single time you see someone use their MacBooks, it’s with a trackpad or wireless mouse. It’s as simple as that; the air of a premium product / focus on aesthetics will always come first to Apple, not actual usability.

Which I think is totally fine. No one uses that mouse professionally, it’s exclusively for people who value form over function. And that’s a choice everyone’s free to make.

I’ll never use it you are supposed to put your Mac into sleep mode unless you are unplugging it
Apple commits to being 100 percent carbon neutral and at the same time they assume that we always leave the computer in sleep mode (wasting energy) - it makes sense!

The Mac mini wastes 0.50-0.55W in sleep mode (Product Environmental Report - Mac mini). It should be easy to turn it on/off if we want - that small act (multiplied by millions) also helps the environment.

So what you're saying is that it wastes absolutely no power and that if you want to turn it off you still can really easily but you're really annoyed by it. If you want to offset that usage, perhaps turn a light bulb off when you leave a room or any one of a million other things that would save more power. Or, you know, turn it off using the power button that isn't that hard to access.

I had 4 Macs which died of heat:
2008 MBP 14
2011 MBP 17
2011 iMac
Mac mini (forgot the year, but old)

iMac and MBPros, had that heat issue when the GPUs started to get unsoldered.
I took so much care of those and for nothing.
MacMini had its Power Supply module overheating.

You can be as sure as you want, I know I am 😀
And I have a 2011 MBP that I still use almost everyday for streaming. Still works great. Anecdotal evidence just like yours. You have any real data to back up your claims? Nope, didn't think so.

I don't need this at all but I'm so tempted to buy it because its so small lol.

After announcing new iMac, Mac mini, and MacBook Pro models this week, Apple invited selected journalists and content creators to check out the products in person.

The Verge attended the gathering, and it has now shared hands-on photos of the dramatically smaller Mac mini, the refreshed color options for the iMac, the updated Magic accessories with USB-C ports, and more. We have highlighted a few of these photos below, and we encourage you to check out their article for a complete gallery.

There are also some hands-on videos, including ones from Brian Tong and AppleDsign:

All of the products are available to order now. The new Magic accessories have already started arriving to customers, and the new Macs launch Friday, November 8.

In the various articles and reviews circulating on the Web, I have never read anything regarding the audio component of the new Mac Mini. I presume it is of little relevance. Is that so? Does anyone know anything about it?

Didn't I just list 4 products that died on me?
What world we live in....

It’s too bad they didn’t take this opportunity to revise the keyboard and mouse even a little bit.

That mouse is an abomination, designed primarily for how it looks. It has potential—scrolling and swiping on it are brilliant. But the ergonomics and utility of it are awful and always have been.

If I buy one, I'll do it even if I have to lift it perhaps.

You're assuming I don't, but I already switch off a light bulb when I leave a room I won't be back in for a while.

The fact that I, or other people, do it and other things (or not) doesn't justify Apple not making it easier to do it on the Mac mini - maybe they want Macs to be on for as long as possible.

Because someone else is also thinking about this...

The dimensions read 5-inches in width, 5-inches in depth and just 1.96-inches in height.
By comparison, the Apple TV 4K is almost 4-inches in width and depth, and 1.22-inch in height.

The headphone jack has same description for Studio , iMac , and mini.

“ …
  • 3.5 mm headphone jack with advanced support for high-impedance headphones
…”

There is very likely little difference there as Apple is likely to use same components on all three systems to get better economies of scale .

The audio formats supported list isn’t there for the older Studio ( but don’t think there is a major leap there; just Apple being more complete in explicitly listed specs) .

“ …
  • Supported formats include AAC, MP3, Apple Lossless, FLAC, Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby Atmos
…”

( high overlap with AppleTV audio specs which are ‘ worded’ differently
https://www.apple.com/apple-tv-4k/specs/ )

In short , digital audio out is primarily handed by HDMI socket by default. And digital ‘in’ is primarily punted to some 3rd party adapter.

We commonly deploy the Mac Mini in conference rooms. It's just thin enough to be able to hide behind a wall-mounted flat panel TV. I'm worried that the new M4 mini isn't going to permit that anymore... it's much higher.

Apple is doing a good job of convincing me to get a Mac Mini, but then I'd love for them to create an Apple display that is designed with better support for multiple inputs.
