Z Flip5, Z Fold5 and 15 Pro owner here…..it’s nice to have options! I wouldn’t buy a Chinese brand though for warranty and security reasons alone.

While there is a lot for me to like here (RAM, Peak nits, 239g weight, multitasking approach, barely noticeable crease, overall size, fast charger in the box, etc.) I just can't buy a OnePlus phone for three reasons:

1. Chinese company
2. Past record of hardware and software issues
3. Probably the worst support in the game

I almost pulled the trigger just to give it a shot, but I know better.
If you go around anyone's home I wonder how many branded items are made in China? I'm sure if the Chinese government wanted to play spy games with our equipment they could at the factor end no matter what company is involved, and if China want to see pictures of my cats and millions sadly of mens d*ck pics then let them have at it.

Looking around my home most of my equipment is made in China, including my last iPhone, a 1TB 14 Pro, alone with my router, my Mac, etc as I said I don't know what happens in those factories (I doubt anything tbh) I like the fact that boundaries are being pushed, and considering how buggy iOS is getting I can hardly hold that up any more as a shining light of 'it just works' also I am pretty sure if this was a Apple device the usual grumbling about it "not being useful" or "I can see the point in it" would probably change to "have my money"

I think foldable phones will be great further down the line, a phone and a tablet all in one, so much better than two devices for myself at least, and considering my disability if it ways less than a iPad and a iPhone put together, even better. I'm sure Apple is playing with these ideas themselves in their R&D departments and if they came out with one yes I would probably buy it. I just wonder just how long Apple would take, with their drip fed level of innovation to actually get one to market?

The foldable concept is interesting - I don’t know why anyone would deny it. But even when they’re consumer-ready (no crease, reliant durability), the question will be if slab phones will become so good that foldables will be acceptable. What I mean is that, in the same thickness, you can include 2x (actually more) more battery in a slab phone, a better screen, better cameras, etc. So will people give up an incredible slab phone in order to get a less incredible foldable phone? Because that will be always the case.

Typical macrumors member "Folding phones are dumb!"

in the next year 'Apple Announces folding iphone!' "macrumors member - take my money!!!":p
I've never gotten my head around it. So assuming;
  • They have found the technology to allow screens to fold without undue deterioration.
  • It's not to heavy.
  • It's not too thick.
  • The OS has been tweaked to suit.
How can someone be negative about it?

Yes, I want a Pro Max that unfolds into an iPad Mini in my pocket. Imagine multi app use or even editing ProRaw photos in the unfolded state 😍
That‘s not going to happen, because no matter on what axis you fold an iPad Mini, you end up with a stupid form factor. Or you get an iPad Mini with a stupid form factor, like the guy in this article who looks at a square photo on his device.

The best one yet, they are getting there, slowly. Hopefully, they improve the front panel next time to have a consistent bezel, improve the ipx rating, and improve the crease further.

I wonder why no one has thought of a sliding instead of folding mechanism yet? Like instead of folding it, it would slight out from behind the smaller compact screen and merge into one screen. obviously needs a solution for covering a gap problem though but I am not an engineer

Because these prerequisites require Apple to pretty much cut the thickness and weight of current iPhones in half and surpass obvious physical limitations of display technology.

amazing hardware and a good software attempt from all things considered. as always though costly and the support and durability from one plus is always a concern in terms of what they can be trusted. they have nailed the front display.

Can we talk about how good that screen looks? Amazing. If this is available as a trade in. I'd be a highly tempted.

Chinese is not a race. It could be either a nationality or ethnicity, but not a race.

Human is the race regardless of the other two things.

As for the post you replied to, I also don’t trust the Chinese govt so this would also be a hard stop for me.
Oh, that makes sense, they are terrible!

What's the phone with 22:12 on screen is that the 2023 Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5? That's really looooong!

Watching Loki, Killers of the Flower Moon, The Boys, John Wick: Chapter 4 & The Mandalorian must be nice not having to see black bars on the top and bottom of the screen.

He did mention he owns the fold, flip and iPhone. So by elimination, I believe that’s the galaxy fold. Maybe it’s the angle of the photo that makes it appear a little taller and narrower than it really is.

What really buffles me is the price of these things.

I get it - the “novelty” factor, one device to do it all, etc., but 1700$ for something that will be old news and lagging in 2-3 years?

15 Pro Max starts at 1199$, so we have extra 500$ to spare for a good enough iPad 10 with bigger screen.

I would be interested in Apple foldable, but certainly not at this price.

Foldables in this format are just weird to me.

Maybe if they unfolded twice into a real 16:9 screen, but the square shape of the screen on these “Fold” type of phones is just… weird.

That screen ratio is not good for consuming content.

Haters gon hate. If this had iMessage I’d switch. This phone is a beauty, well done. Meanwhile us poor iPhone saps will have yet another model in a year that looks like our iPhone 12’s. Apple is waiting because this will cannibilize iPad sales.
I don't remember how it was phrased exactly, but there was something written about Apple trying it, and not being fans of the foldable screens or something along those lines a couple years back.

I would be interested in atleast how they would implement it, being Apple.

Personally I love the sturdiness and feel of a solid brick in my hand, I think the foldable screen would feel more fragile.
But I'm here to be surprised :)

Terrific phone, one of the best foldables I've seen yet. I can't wait for Apple to do one. Remember when the first Galaxy Note came out and all the Apple fans made fun of it (I was one of them)? "Why would I carry a tablet around in my pocket, it's so absurd." Now the Pro Max (same size bracket) is the best selling iPhone model.

Foldable tech is getting to the point where the folded state has approximately the same weight and thickness as a regular slab phone. The first generation crease issues are being improved year over year and OnePlus have done the best job so far as far as I can recall.

The problem with the screen crease is… it get worse.

It may look “barely noticeable” in reviews where they are filming a brand new phone but with a couple of months of usage they become way more visible and it just looks straight up ugly.

I don’t want a $1800 device that’s going to show wear and tear on the screen within a year like it’s a cheap pair of H&M pants. That’s not good for me as a consumer or good for the environment.
