Riwam: What is the configuration of your MP6,1 ? I ask as reading through this long post/thread is just too time consuming for me to find out if you posted this info. Thanks.

BTW... I have the 12-core MP6,1 (fully loaded with 64GB RAM) and it operates perfectly without any sort of whining since being received Feb 24th. In fact none of the people I've spoken with in the office can hear it at all, and the system is located in a 'quiet' room. The MP6,1 is placed on a hard surface on a table top that is maybe 18" off the floor.

I have only updated the software saying I should do so, Saschke.
Am I not supposed to be told by the computer to install any newly appeared and necessary upgrade?
I have not seen any such message yet...

Hmm, they are so fresh out of the factory, that update might in fact be pre-installed. I'll let you know how my replacement comes in.

Even when it's encoding with HandBrake it is what I would call "silent". I was shocked.

Truly Silent MacPro Here

Got mine yesterday...
6C@3.5Ghz 32GbRAM 2xD700 512GbPCIe

Tested w/ 4k@12, 2.7@30 and 1080p@100 GoPro footage, Parallels VM with 3D visualizations and data crunching...

My ear to the metal and the only thing i hear is my skin against the micro brushed finish of the nMP

;)

Cheers!

The requested info... And a question

Here is the configuration I received:
6 core, 1 TB, D500, 3x4 GB
It is after 5 days as quiet as yours, thanks God (and thanks Apple) :p

Tried the exact same thing and yup, same issue, except for me it still does it on the L & R side of the screen.

You mention the screeching coil whine is pretty bad but in my case i really would have to almost put my ear on top of the mp to hear it.

Does this actually mean the bmp i received has a defect somewhere or shouldn't this affect the overall performance and see it for what it is "a harmlous sound"...because if this is the case i won't even bother in contacting Apple about this to be honest.

For me I can easily replicate the issue by doing the following:
1. Open a photo in CS6
2. Filter/blur/field blur
3. A little circle shows up in the middle of the photo. I place my pointer onto the circle, hold down the track pad and move my finger up and down to increase, decrease the blur and as I do that the machine exhibits the screeching coil whine pretty bad. Whats interesting is if I move the photoshop window more toward the right side of the screen then it doesn't do it. I wonder if its using a different GPU and its one of the GPUs that has a bad coil etc. My return date is March 28th, If Apple has not come up with anything by then its going back.

Tried the Photoshop CS6 Blur thing...

Did it with a 4.96Gb RAW picture.. applied the field blur.. came with a 23 Gb file... did not flinch or anything...

If your computer screeches like you say take it back like NOW!

My main concern or question is "Is this some sort of defect or is it nothing more than just a noise thats a bit annoying when you focus on it?"

If it's not really a big deal and won't have any effect on my computers performance in the future *hence a prelude to a component that is going to break...than i can live with it really...it's not as if its really loud in my case, i'd have to really really listen carefully to hear it or put my ear on top of the computer so i don't really wanna make a big deal out of something that's really not that big of a deal....

Dude that started this thread wanted to instill fear in the hearts of new mp owners. Turns out he was freaking out about nothing, his is silent.

Whatever problem exists with your machine if any, call apple and let the forum know how it goes.

Censorship?

Nice people over here...
Making lemonade makes them as sweet as their beverage :D

The "Dude" who started this thread based it on already existing reports of different users in different countries with differently configured nMPs...and didn't make it up by himself!

The nMP of that "Dude" is at present not showing that bug, although it had a different problem concerning shaking/trembling in the display when moving anything.
The "Dude" reported it in another thread and how he solved it, just in case it happens to somebody else.:)

At least 2 of the people concerned by noise problems reported that the noise only appeared after a certain time in an initial quiet nMP.
The "Dude" who started this thread has received his nMP just 8 days ago!, so he is monitoring his computer and hopes that no bug of any kind will appear. That has nothing to do with the ridiculous accusation of trying to create fear

Sharing information was always useful and if someone is not concerned or interested by any thread, he should quit instead of blaming "Dudes"

You are not sharing info. You are spreading unsubstantiated fear. You are not a dude?

I just share information provided by other users

.....................
Of course I am sharing information.
Information provided by different users, some of them reporting to be very satisfied, others having some kind of issue with their nMP and therefore legitimately worried about it.
The whole info and the details of the issues of those reporting one, come from those concerned users and certainly not from me.
I personally find the nMP an extraordinary machine.
Why would anybody spread fear about it?

Bright guy with bright ideas...

Lock this mess.
.............................................................................
I do not have neither the "keys" nor the rights to "lock" any thread and I believe it applies to you as well.
As long as people are interested and want to post in any thread, it goes on, wether you like it or not.
When nobody is any longer interested in that subject, the thread goes to the end of the list and that's it...
AFAIK this forum is not in North Korea or in Iran...
:D

I'm going to set an event in iCal to remind myself to come here and make a posting, just to keep it alive forever to piss off those that see themselves as the self appointed censors of information here (cough, lemonade-maker, cough)

Quit yer' whining, "dude"

Before doing that, check the forum rules about pointless "bumping" of threads.

In the normal use, I do not hear any noise from my nMP. When I put my ear on the top of the nMP (nearly touching the top edge of the cylinder), I can hear the air flow and a mechanical sound that, I think, is coming from the fan. This does not bother me at all.

If that mechanical sound were not present, I could call my nMP a "truly silent nMP".
