It has got a Samsung Screen - and yep it has yellowing...

Not a happy bunny 2 weeks I have waited for this baby..

I originally had a 2.4 but they wouldn't upgrade the HDD and no one else would. Screen was amazing. But sent it back. Ordered this one online, and the screen has yellowing / tobaccoing when you look at it at an angle... :(

It is a Samsung screen which I hear is the culprit. This issue has been going on for a while - not impressed they are still using them!

On the phone to apple care this morning me thinks...

This is from colour profiler showing the model number.

Mine finally arrived. It's joyful all the way!
Now, to figure out what to order next. :):p

Thanks SammyAD for the supporting words during my troubled times... ;)

I've been using a Panasonic SD5 since it came out, a couple of months I guess. I'm also in the market for a new MBP to replace my 12" PowerBook G4. There is no real urgency for me to do so since I do video editing on my MacPro Quad 3Ghz. I can tell you that even on this very powerful machine, downloading AVCHD files is extremely slow. It happens in "real time" at best. I put the 4Gb SDHC card in a reader and plug it in to the USB on the front of my MacPro. I am led to believe that this is the most efficient way to move the data, but I'd sure be happy if someone could tell me of a faster way. Thirty minutes of video takes about thirty minutes to download. AVCHD is a relatively new, advanced format. Hopefully improvements will be forthcoming. On the plus side, the camera works beautifully and the images are spectacular. Contrary to much of what we've been hearing iMovie 08 is fine. Now Final Cut Express handles AVCHD too, but I haven't tried it yet.

So back to your question, my sense is that your new MBP will have similar performance with AVCHD as my MacPro, maybe a hair slower. SpeedMark tests available online may give you some point of reference for that. I'm waiting until Mac World in January to buy a new MBP so I can take my video "on the road". I'm not sure if Penryn will significantly improve MBP performance with AVCHD, but because it is such a power intensive process I want every ounce of juice I can get. I look forward to putting video up on iWeb in almost real time as I travel!

Congrats on both of your purchases: you've got a couple of very cool new toys! Enjoy!

Thanks for your information, it let me know what I'll be expecting when I receive my package. I know the MacBook Pro will never be as fast as the Mac Pro (even if I hope it would:p), but I hope it'll be an substantial upgrade from my PowerBook G4 and PowerMac dual G5 in handling AVCHD and H.264 files (for converting movies/videos for iPod/Apple TV). I will consider upgrading my PowerMac, if necessary or if I have $$$, next year when the new Intel chips come out. :)

P.S: BTW, I'm loving my Panasonic SD5 already, so small, simple to use, and outputs incredible picture in 1080i. Now, all I need is some editing platform and software, and that's where my new MacBook Pro comes in.

the war wages on....

Saw your post on here and the Apple forums Steve77uk!

Same problem here - I've been on the phone with apple for 2 hours and so far no has ever heard of a yellowing/discoloration of the screen on the 15.4inch Macbook pro's.

I've messed with the color settings, PRAM, everything.

The dreaded Sansung yellow screens are still out there people!

So disappointed - I finally get my first mac and the screen is crap. You know, if you pay about $3000 for a laptop, it had better damn well have a kick-ass screen.

UPDATE: After talking to 4 different people through Apple Care, i was able to secure a repair, given the choice of either a repair, or a replacement. Considering i don't want to play my chances again at getting a bad screen, i just had them repair it. Box should be here monday and back by Friday of that week. I must say, Apple really does have great service, after you get through talking to people in India.

Mine is going back later this month. They are letting me keep it until the end of the semester to finish work etc. My screen is trashed, something with the card...

Are your screens that bad? Mine is barely noticeable. I mean i agree it should be perfect for $3000, but it is hardly noticeable. In fact everyone here at work say it is the best screen they have seen. I wonder if mine just isnt as bad as your guys screen. When I am looking at it straight forward it is very hardly noticeable, only if you are looking carefully for it. With the color tests in the other thread with the 2 white boxes it is noticeable however. But it seems like it isnt that big of a deal. I hope it is just that mine isnt that bad.

I wish the only problem with my screen was the yellowing, I wouldn't have to send it back. Mine has a mechanical issue with the LED and it goes into some kind of Phase effect and becomes really blurry and unreadable.

2.6 chip ordered Oct 30 recieved Nov 19th

I put together a order on line but didn't send it, just saved it. 2 days later I got a message from Apple from a sales rep who said he could help me with my tenative order. I called him and he was great very helpful and he saved me $350 dollars off the on line price.

Got the
2.6 chip
200 gig 7200rpm drive
high rez screen
2 gigs memory - already upgraded to 4 gigs for only $119.00

The order did take 3 weeks to get to me - 2 days ahead of the on line estimated date.

So after 6 yeras on a PC I have come "home" to Mac once again> I had a Mac from the Mac SE days yup thats like Paul Mccartney before "Wings".

Damn I feel sorry for the ones that got the yellow-tint issue with these amazing 2.6ghz 200/250rpm drives.

Looks like the only way to get the best mbp with those bto options is to order it with the 17" w/hi-res ofcourse.

Well my second one is due in today.

Let's see whether I will be a happy bunny, or a sad and peed off monster!!! lol

I have decided that if this one is faulty, I will just return it and ask for a refund as it is a nightmare waiting and it seems to be a bit of a lottery at the moment!

Does the yellowing issue present immediatley or does it phase in gradually?

I primarily use a HDTV as a monitor so my MBP is shut like 99% of the time but for the odd occaison when i do use it as a regular laptop would i see yellowing straight away if my screen is affected? or does it need to be running for a certain amount of time

i find the lack of pics in this thread disappointing! someone should post pics of them unboxing it, turning it on..etc! help ease your fellow macs with pics of u getting yours!

The yellowing is there from the start. I call it more of a tabacco colour really - when looking at it face on get a black picture with a white box at the top and a white box at the bottom. Look at the screen from the side too where it becomes more apparent. It is hard to take photos of a computer screen but will try later

I'm going to be giving Apple a call here soon also. When I got it back from the repair center the Macbook pro had a darker top part of the screen than the bottom, with the bottom portion slightly yellowing. It also has the "sparkly" effect on the top part of screen, and when working in a worksheet, that is very annoying. Also, the left side, when closed is about 3-4mm up above the right because they didn't put the lid to the machine on squarely. That kind of scared me, because the lid has to bend a little bit when closed, and that can't be good for anything. Oh well, looks like I'm going for a full replacement this time. I sure hope they give me some money off, this is ridiculous.

Just got my windows Vista DVD in the mail too, dangit. I really wanted to see the gaming capabilities of this machine in action. Oh well, I'm sure as hell not installing it on this computer. *sigh* I'm starting to become disappointed in Apple.
