I am a college student who just play league of legends, watch youtube videos and do college assignments.
I am not sure if I go for an M2 air with 16gb and 1tb memory; a M3 pro with M3 chip with 8gb ram and 512gb.
Or other options…

Please I accept any suggestions/help

I can't really feel a 15-30% performance increase. And definitely not for this kind of money.
My 14" M1 Pro / 32GB / 1TB (still a wonderful machine) will have to truck on at least until the M4 Pro.

... Other option is waiting. My 2014 13" Pro is dated but it's only really a problem with lightroom. But the speakers are broken and the space is all filled up, so while I could last another year, and probably should since the computer is mostly still okay, I dont really want to.

Decisions decisions....

You have clearly waited long enough. Bravo! Going from a 2014 13" Pro to any of the current Macs will simply blow your socks off. I wholeheartedly recommend that you upgrade right. now. You deserve it.

I like to think I'm a "power user" but in reality I'm not. My M1 Mac mini (base 8/256) has been awesome for me for three years now. Gotta admit I'm thinking about getting a base M3 14" MBP and using it in clamshell mode to replace my Mac mini 95% of the time and as a portable 5% of the time. Any thoughts on this approach?

It has more storage, bigger and better screen, better speakers, better battery life, more I/O than the last 3 generations of the 13" Pr

It's an entry level MBP. Aside from battery, what advantage to everyday light weight tasks does it have over the same spec 2020 intel MBP? Let alone M1 or M2 13 inch MBP.

Can only support a single monitor if that’s important to you.

1. A 9000 inch screen with notch.
2. A 14 inch screen without notch.

I would choose number 2. every time, because there is nothing ruining the screen.
I would choose 2 because 1 won't fit in my bag, but my NotchBook Pro does fit in my bag. I would choose a 14" screen with notch over a 14" screen with a no notch but a thick top bezel.
It's like a car with a black spot on the front window: Useless and painful to look at.
Most modern car windshields have a notch where the rearview mirror is (and active safety and lane-centering/keep tech).

They're not the same specs, though.

If you're just doing lightweight tasks, buy the M2 Air, which is a better computer than the 2020 Intel in every way.

Macrumors not everyone has this kind of disposable income.

Dump a 1 year old notebook? Is that really a recommendation?
My thoughts exactly! If you have last years model there is no reason to upgrade if you don’t have the $$$ to do so. In this economy lots of folks have to make what they have last longer. Thankfully the M series processors, including the M1, makes this pretty easy.

But why should you upgrade for these kinds of tasks even from Intel 2020 to M2 Air with the same RAM/SSD specs? Again, aside from the battery life.

One of the least cited reasons to upgrade is silence. By the end the Intel MBs would have their fans spinning loud enough to hear if you even thought about launching an app.

Absolute nonsense. I have 2020 Intel MBP runnig Ventura and it's completely silent.

  • Fanless - ie. quiet.
  • Faster browsing, snappier overall
  • Better battery
  • Bigger and better screen
  • Better speakers
  • Better webcam
  • Better I/O
  • MagSafe
If one values any of these features then it's worth the upgrade.
