I met the guy who played the rock band leader of "The Zits" in the original "Degrassi Junior High". If you don't know who I am talking about, then I guess you should watch more TV. I also met Mitsou, a french singer from Quebec. I don't think she sings anymore, as I saw her on a talk show. ;)

and while trying to catch the ferry home from Vancouver I was at the bus station and they were filming a scene for X-Files...I saw Gillian Anderson standing about 15 feet away....the director guy was telling people they could walk through and everything but to not look or smile at the camera...I was going to wait so I could say I was on the X-Files but I had to get that ferry.....damn.....oh yeah!
I was on the set of the X-Files (first season) before David and Gillian became famous. I was about 10 feet or so from the set and both David and Gillian were sitting at the set. They looked really bored waiting for the crew to set up lights, etc. This was for about an hour that I hung around. They didn't look particularly like attractive actors either. And when someone on the set said the name of the show was called the X-Files, I thought it was a stupid name and the show wouldn't last past the first pilot. How wrong I was.

I'm only 16, so I haven't met many famous people (so, yeah, not any) but anyone that is a huge water polo fan in the states would know Taylor Lapin from LB, CA. He's the best high school goalie in the nation, and I play water polo and swim with him.

My mom worked at a grocery store that the Jackson 5 would go to every few days (of course, this was decades ago). She's told me that when they were young, all of them were quite nice and respectful, and ever so fearful of their dad.

I'v met and talked on the phone to Trevor Linden (famous hockey player)

I'v talked to Howard Gordon (producer and writer of 24) and Joseph Hodges (production designer of 24) on the phone.

I know there are more, if I think of them I will post later.

he plays street ball down the block from my house sometimes. Very nice and layed back guy, its ashame that people view him as a no-good gangster.

my dad, who worked as room service in the Adam's Mark hotel in Philadelphia about 7 years ago mentioned that Shaq and Will Smith would stay there a lot. They apparently tip very well, but shaq would cuss a whole lot (especially when making jokes)

I used to work at the Children's Museum in Boston, and I sold tickets to:

> Alan Alda: I was a fan of him from when he was on M*A*S*H. I just blurted out "Hey! Alan Alda!" (couldn't think of anything else) and he was kind of like 'yeah yeah just give me my tickets' in a polite way. I don't blame him. He's REALLY TALL.

> Maria from Sesame Street. She was nice, but it was really crowded and she looked to be in a hurry.

I saw Joe Shortsleeve (sp?), Liz Walker and Randy Price (at different times) all from WBZ-TV in and around Boston. They were all jerks though (real arrogant, and I didn't even try talking to them.) They symbolize why I dislike famous people.

The 6 o'clock news ain't Hollywood

Back in 1993 I went to Munich when we had a guest performance with Peer Gynt (in Norwegian) as a part of the marketing before the 1994 Olympics at Lillehammer.

The standing joke before we left was that we were going to Munich to visit Derrick (probably not very well known outside Europe). Well, guess who showed up, early one morning:

I used to be the band director/music teacher at Columbia High School in Maplewood, NJ. This school, by all accounts a fairly normal HS in a semi-urban setting near the largest city in NJ, has had much more than its fair share of celebrities in attendance over the years. One of them, Andrew Shue, decided that he would create a "hall of fame" where graduates could return and be honored for their contributions to society. (some contributions are debateable, but that's not my point...) As the band director, we were always present at the assembly, and as a voting and nominating member of the committee, I got to do lunch with most of these folks afterwards. Here is a short list of recent inductees off the top of my head:

Andrew Shue (actor)
Elizabeth Shue (very hot actress)
Max Weinberg (more on him at the end)
Roy Schieder (actor)
Lauren Hill (singer, Grammy winner)
Alfred Kinsey (posthumously inducted)
Frank Langella (missed the ceremony)
Arthur Bartner (big deal in educational music, director of USC band?)

a Supreme Court Justice, a children's author, a poet, and more you've probably heard of but I can't think of their names right now....

and some who will be elected soon, probably:
Ahmed Best (voice of Jar-Jar Binks - I know, you hated him....)
Leigh Stevens (world's best marimba player, bar none...)
Zach Braniff (sp? the scrubs dude)
Buzzy Hellring/Joel Silver (inventors of Ultimate Frisbee, 1968)
(BTW: Joel Silver is the famous movie director/producer - but the staff at the school just hated the guy and they refuse to elect him...)

architects, artists, poets, etc...

anyway, about Max Weinberg (drummer for Conan and some guy named Bruce....)
Max's mom still lives in Maplewood. When he was elected to the hall of fame, he came back, and he brought his mom up to the band room for a tour of where he spent most hours of the day instead of going to his other classes. He also played an assembly with our jazz band - which was pretty cool for everyone involved (including me). Additionally, when Conan had Andrew Shue as a guest, Max called me and had me call his answering machine at home and sing the school's alma mater so he could transcribe it and play it as Andrew entered the stage. It was pretty funny to Max and Andrew but not very many other people.... He is a very nice, down to earth person, unlike most of the other people on that list.

Oh, and I met the pope when our school band and brass ensemble played at the Easter Mass at the vatican. Well, I kissed his ring, anyway - it wasn't like "hey, JP, how's it hangin'" or anything...

Oh, and the jazz band played for the launch party of ESPN the Magazine, and we got our picture taken with a mildly drunk Stuart Scott.

Fun thread.

I went to columbia high school! class of '99. I never took any music classes though. That place is going down the tubes now though. I remember lauryn hill came back and gave a speech during my senior year. That was pretty nuts. My 8th grade math teacher said I sat in the same seat as Max Weinberg, which he found very entertaining since my name is max as well.

Have you met any celebrities?

Maybe I'm just a little too cynical and jaded, but I honestly don't pay any attention to anyone whose only claim to fame is being able to repeat lines from memory that were actually written by someone else - and sometimes they don't even do that too well, but are still popular nevertheless.

Now people like Dr Jonas Salk, Dr Christian Barnard, Chuck Yeager, Buzz Aldrin etc those are the *real* celebrities IMHO. And of course the hundreds of thousands of others whose names we rarely hear of let alone remember.

I was interviewed (and so were a few other people) by CBS local news anchor Laura Diaz for a "special report", but she didn't use my part in the eventual broadcast. Maybe I shouldn't have tried to get her to switch to Mac during the interview. :D

By the way, don't leave that Laura Diaz bio page open. It has nasty scripting that makes it bring itself to the front without permission every once in a while. Not to mention the pop-up windows. Grrrrr. I'm switching to another news station to get even with them.

You're probably right, but don't spoil everyone's fun. Even though celebreties are, for the most part, fairly worthless human beings, It's still fun and exciting when one gets to meet them. I don't know why...

I'd like to meet Nicole Kidman. You see her in movies, TV and magazine ads, that to see her in real life would be very surreal.

I ran into Andy Dick at Universal Studios, LA. He was waiting to get on the new Mummy Ride. Dark gold striped suit and sunglasses. He didn't look too happy that I was snapping photos with flash in his eyes.

Recognized Harry Winkler (the Fonz on Happy Days) at an Italian joint in old town pasadena. Got his autograph.

On a Southwest flight between Los Angeles and Sacramento, I ran into California governor Gray Davis. He was surrounded by law enforcement and body guards. Once the plane landed, he classily waved, wished the cabin luck, and exited into a waiting Lincoln towncar.

I'd rather meet Elisha Cuthbert than any astronaut you could name. I'd rather meet Salma Hayek than any world leader you could name. Hottie status is far more prestigious than life experience or achievement.

So it's not. But man are those two women hot.

I met and hung out with Angelina Jolie... many moons ago. Before she became what she is now, and before she was known to anybody. Oh well.

I have also met Whoppi Goldberg, and most of the Original Star Trek cast through my work.

I have also met and hung out with a lot of "celebs." Who cares? In my line of work it is all normal; I never watch TV, but when I am at a friend's house, I see a few friends and people I konow on commercials, talk shows, etc.

Oh yeah: the only one I care to mention as a "true" experience: I had a beer with Elliot Smith backstage at First Avenue in Minneapolis. It was amazing; he was extremely humble and intelligent. I miss that man and his music: he was a beautiful artist... Why do the best die young?

Oops, sorry for being the party pooper on this thread :D

As for those who'd like to meet celebs, I can vouch for Los Angeles as being an ideal spot. What with the movie studios having their HQs here and all those *in* spots like Spagos etc

Reminds me of when I worked diagonally across the street from Spagos. It was quite fun to see them roll out the red carpet for the important celebs (movie stars, politicians etc) and watch all the wannabes hanging around trying to get themselves noticed. Quite pathetic really.

Also Vancouver is a great spot to see celebrities (well not compared to LA, but it is still good)

Recently filming around here I'v seen such people as Will Smith, Halle Berry, that guy (I forget his name)
