Being asked about your phone is very different to it be classed as a status symbol. What you say here sounds very unpleasant to me. I’d hate attention like that and would likely buy a case to disguise it. That’s just me though. Some here, not suggesting you, like to show off and convey the notion they are wealthy. I don’t need to do that and the X isn’t an example of that IMO.

Well, you were saying about certain category of products attracting attention and that you didn’t think the X was one such product. I said that I had a different opinion because the X attracted tons of attention on its own.

This attention doesn’t have anything to do with showing off, as you seem to think. It’s just enough to use the phone when you’re out - and mind you, no case will hide the notch and the OLED ‘ears’.

But on the whole, I agree that it’s not a status symbol. If you take into account the user base and the fact that it is one of the bestselling smartphones in the world now, it’s anything but exclusive.

I was careful not to suggest you show off, it’s obvious which person here does that without naming names.

I’m curious to see how well the X has sold seeing as I am yet to physically see one in public or meet anybody that’s bought one. It’s the rarest iPhone to date yet many are already claiming it’s one of the best selling. Weird. Yeah it’s not a status symbol as far as I’m concerned, its £1k not £10k. It’s just expensive for a smartphone and fairly rare as smartphones go as far as I can tell.

I've seen one in Chipotle owned by a former Apple employee. She loves it!

Maybe people haven't been updating phones as much as we think but this year is more evident because of the new design. Before this year it wasn't easy to tell if someone had a 6, 6s, or 7.

Let’s put it this way: iPhones are like cars from BMW or Mercedes - expensive and using ‘premium’ materials, but due to the sheer number of units sold each year, not exclusive anymore.

Re sales again - I don’t remember seeing much more iPhones 6/6 Plus back in the day and that was the most successful iPhone launch to date, if I’m correct. So the fact that some of us have already seen many Xs in the wild (eg me) and some none (eg you), doesn’t mean much for now.

I think there’s bound to be a bit of a difference as the iPhone 6 base model could be bought for £615 and the base model X is £999 so I think that’s played a big part. I saw a lot of iPhone 6’s soon after launch and every salesman I encountered had one. The X is so illusive where I am I still haven’t seen a single one. The fact threads exist asking if we’ve seen any iPhone X’s and countless people from around the globe suggesting they are not a common sight probably means they are rarer than an iPhone 6 ever was. I could be wrong but I don’t think I am at this point in time.

yeah, I guess you’re not wrong, most likely because iPhone 6 went on sale one month and a half earlier, was available in two sizes and, as you mentioned, was way cheaper. And the thread... isn’t it just every year’s business on this forum?

Anyways, I’m not claiming that the X is as popular as 6, because most likely it is not, but I still claim that it is popular and sales are strong ;)

Haven’t seen it at work yet but my sister and bff upgraded to an X. One from a 5 and another 6s.

I’m sure it is strong for its particular market segment, but yeah it’s never going to be the prime seller due to its limitations. I suppose it’s a bit like the Hermes or ceramic Apple watches. They sell well for their particular part of the market but the aluminium is the more popular line due to it’s price point and appeal.

My friend bought one, and another friend bought one for his girlfriend. These are the only iphones X that i've seen till now. These things just dont sell well - they are too expensive for what they offer and people are just not willing to pay that much money, when Samsung and LG phones can do the same stuff for lot less money.

I haven’t seen a single iPhone X out in the wild yet even though I live in a rich city with the Porsche and Mercedes HQ.

However people are known to be cheap f here so I am not actually surprised haha

Just want to use your post as a reference, but an iPhone X or any smart phone will never define How wealthy somebody is. It's a smart phone. There are those who cannot afford an iPhone X payment, but they financed through their carrier anyway. It just goes to show you that you can't define find somebody based off what smart phone they use for overall wealth status.

Hmm, I remember seeing an iPhone 6 the day it was released, same goes for the original Apple Watch on its release day. As for the X, I've never ever seen one that wasn't strapped to a table.

I think I saw about 4 in 3 months. Never seen a design change iPhone being so rare.
The previous few generations are too similar to distinguish. And the iPhone X is more expensive.

Not to mention that spending money does not equal having money. More often than not, it equals having debt.

I'd like to see the numbers of people who paid outright for the phone v. the people who bought on a payment plan through carriers v. those who are part of IUP.

People love to use the argument that it is $1000+ but I would venture a guess that the individuals who went in and paid that outright are the minority. It is way easier to justify the monthly payment of the various carriers or through IUP than it is just to walk in and drop a $1000. It isn't a $1000 to a lot of people, it is $50 a month (or less) with zero percent interest - I would even go further in saying that to most people who upgraded to the X it is justified by saying, it is only $xx more a month than my current phone.
Considering how much I use my phone, I had no issue paying outright. Where I live it is cheaper to negotiate a low cost, BYOD plan than pay for an expensive two year contract to subsidize the phone. Plus it’s unlocked out of the box for travel.

Not sure why I’m replying to this haha, but just this last weekend I was talking with a family friend. His net worth is in the neighborhood of about 300M. He’s using an iPhone 6 and could give 2 S***s about what phone he has as long as it makes calls and lets him access email. Some of the wealthiest people I know are the most down to earth and unassuming people around.

I know quite a few people that have an X, 8 or 8+. I’ve only seen a couple in the wild though. I do admit I don’t really look at what kind of phone someone is using unless they make it obvious.

The guy who owns the company I work for is worth over €100m and uses an iPhone 7 Plus. I think it’s only those who want people to think they are richer than they are who like to brag and flash material items to give false impressions. If you’re rich you don’t need admiration using a mobile phone.

Or people who have a 5 whos phone is shutting down and need a replacement

Lewis Hamilton, one of the richest sportsmen on the planet using an older iPhone at today’s photo shoot. This may be his preference or he’s just not into gadgets? lol

Living in LA, I have seen plenty of iPhone X around the past month. I really think it depends on the locale on the immediate popularity of a phone. Here, you always see the latest and greatest around for both Samsung and Apple near release date.

Yup.

Similarly, if I go out, I'm guaranteed to see an Apple Watch on at least several other peoples' wrists here in the DC area (and it's been that way almost since launch day), while my mom back in the Midwest claimed, for a year and a half, to never see them anywhere.
