Well we do multiple exposures with film too! So I don't think HDR is really cheating (it's just a modern form of multiple exposure with the freedom of tweaking).

Here is a question for you guys. What is the advantage of Nikon's Active D-lighting? I mean it's just in camera processing right? We can achieve the same thing in Photoshop (or D-lighting command in Nikon Capture)?

Attaway to dig up a months old post... this subject has been hashed over again and again, ad nauseum.

But to address D-lighting: I like it, in moderation and only with certain portraiture situations. Otherwise, I'd trust a fill flash or bracketing approach.

Thought i'd run this through Photomatrix, I normally use CS3 for HDR, But PhotoMatrix offers better Tone Mapping.

I think they're all interesting compositions, and all could be good final products, but I think you need to play around with Photomatix a little more. These scream "HDR" at me; a little adjustment of the light smoothing parameter might help to give these a somewhate more natural appearance.

HDR doesn't have to look 'fake'; it wont always look completely realistic (though sometimes I think it actually looks more realistic, given the intrinsic dynamic range differences of a DLSR vs. the human eye), but it doesn't have to look like an illustration either.

Keep at it. Check out Valdore's cityscape work to see HDR done really, really well.

Very good shots, but if you look at the around the edges of the objects there is a white band...thats not that appealing, maybe the white point is to high? i dunno, but none the less very good

Heres one I did of the Grand Canyon during sunset.
I dislike overcooked HDR's that make the shot look like a cartoon and unnatural or something.

First Attempt at HDR

This is my first attempt at HDR (I need a program or clear instructions on how to merge the images together)

See the first 1-2 pages of posts; they answer your question pretty well.

(side note: valdore, may I suggest consolidating most/all of the "tutorial" info throughout the thread into your OP?)

Subtle and practical HDR

I'm really excited about the potential of HDR to bring out the details of photographed sculpture. I made these images from single RAW files that would otherwise be unusable (or at least less effective) photographs.

The next chance I get to photograph sculpture, I'll do some bracketing and see just how far I can take it before the images slip into surrealism.

I happened upon this thread just yesterday. It was the first I'd heard of HDR, so these are among my very first attempts to use it.

This is my first attempt ever at HDR. I haven't bought the right software yet so I am just using the photomatix software (hence the reason the word is watermarked all of the picture). I completely over did the whole HDR thing but o well. It was fun and next time I will actually attempt to make it look more "artistic".

my first few attempts at HDR. Both done with 3 JPEGS, handheld, & made with photoshop.

I feel this one has that typical "HDR" look to it.

While this one doesnt have that "HDR" look to it, it has a high dynamic range, and really illuminates everything.

where's the point of taking the trouble to make 3 exposures, merging them to hdr only to end up with an image that has a dynamic range that is inferior to one correctly exposed one?

I like the "ghostly" look that I came up with. I took the picture really late at night, so there was no light coming into my room, and my overhead light doesnt provide enough light. so, the correctly exposed one, in my opinion, looked terrible. while this doesnt have a high dynamic range, i like the effect it has.

This was taken at the WWII Memorial in DC this past weekend:D

snip

Great colours.

This one might benefit from some lens corrections in Photoshop, to keep the memorial from "leaning". Also, you may have some dust on your sensor (or water on the lens?); look immediately to the left and right of the top corner of the monument.

Otherwise, very nice. Great skies for HDR.

Lol yeah it was water, it had started to sprinkle...but i was going for the tilted-effect...i get kind of tired of straight pictures, they are so generic, so i just wanted to try out a new angle hahaha
