1) Start off with a scene that is already interesting, HDR wont make an uninteresting image good.
2) Effects are most pronounced in scenes with high variations from highlights to shadows. (for example scenes where you would normally take the picture, and get blown out highlights)
3) Don't overdo it (you'll know when you get glowing around objects).
4) For the point and shoot, set it up on a tripod, use the lowest ISO, and use exposure compensation to take a dark, neutral and highly exposed image of the same scene. Combine them with photomatix.

thanks for the steps!! tried to keep the glow to a minimal! :)

ok so i have attached some BEGINNER images, i sun came out so i thought about just taking some pictures and seeing how i went.

these images are really bad, i can tell that much (there is no structure to them or no meaning) - i am just after a bit of feedback on the settings i have used to create the HDR. anything would be great :)

Ohk :p…regarding the settings you pretty well are at the sweet spot - the fence and the grass boarder well, but you see the glow around the tree on your first image…you gotta try and avoid that. Maybe some dodging and burning in PS. Or less intensity in photomatix
See the area at the top left how it is blown out, when taking your three images, make your first image very dark until that part of the sky reveals clouds.

One thing to consider is:
HDR seams really amazing at first, but you soon learn there are usually better ways to get great images.

-Taking photos with natural sunlight light without HDR really do look the better, especially when you get some dark clouds in the background but the foreground is lit gold. You get more natural tones and a better looking image. Given the rainy weather and sun breaks as of late, try going out in the arvo and shoot with your back to the sun and carefully watch where the light is falling, (and take a look at Doylems pictures in the POTD thread.) :)

That said you can still get great results with HDR, just be very careful where and when you use it.

good to hear that my settings are not bad. i did notice the glow around the tree and i thought it looked cool, i had an idea about emphasising the whole tree in photoshop but my knowledge doesnt span that far (would the burn tool do it maybe ). --duh you said "burn" tool haha!

ill try to avoid the glow though when i make some "proper" shots.

the thing that gets me is that they can look so surreal, and almost cartoon like. it gives me a different perspective on everything and makes me look at the little things.. (thats just how i see it haha)

a natural image really shows the "atmosphere" of the picture, and can START to give you a feel of how it must feel to be there in person, i agree totally with you there.

the rain just started coming down when i shot the sky picture, i didnt think about shooting against the rays though :) good idea!

That said you can still get great results with HDR, just be very careful where and when you use it.

 Did you look at the photo of the day thread before you poasted that???
Talk about (another) coincidence!!

EDIT: Yeah, not saying its bad, just its often very hard to get outstanding results, unless your Valdore.

Heres a try from me. I feel it looks more like a real photo than an over processed HDR, but its still 5 images merged together.

Looks great as a 16x20 on my wall, granted I cropped it on the right side, but still get the total effect.

Help...

I would like to post a HDR picture and I made the file size small enough as a jpeg to fit the requirements but when I attach the picture my browswer both firefox and safari time out and nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong or is there another way to upload pictures?

Sorry for being a noob, I just wanted to share my first HDR and receive some c/c. Thanks, and sorry for having to ask.

My second attempt at HDR

This was taken at Thanksgiving Point in Utah. Please post your c/c. Don't worry about hurting my feelings, I want to learn so I need the truth.

My second attempt (ever) at HDR...
Wish I could have got the picture to come out half as cool as the sky looked when I took this, it was really sunny all day and then the weather turned instantly to overcast and very heavy rain.
I just pointed the camera out of the window trying not to get it wet, but wasn't sure what to expose for, the sky or the fields/trees.

The B&W shots are from my hometown last spring when it was remade for the shooting of Johnny Depp's new film Public Enemies. The other 2 are of course Alcatraz,
