Was 5 days a week enough time to let your body recover?

I would train Monday through Friday for approximately 1.5 hours each day, with full rest stays on Saturday and Sundays. It worked for me, but with plenty of sleep involved as well.

When I was running if I tried to do this every day, by day 5, I was spent. Instead, I allowed a day off between each workout to recover.

I’m noticing as usual that when I cut most sugar out of my diet, I start craving it, not right away, but eventually, not a lot of it at first, but enough to get that satisfactory zing.

Not a lot of it” boils down to famous last words. ;)Oh, I’ll just eat one of my miniature candy bars, only 80 calories”, and next week I’ll be eating a cake. No, unlike my Dad (on the wagon alcoholic, not obese) when it comes to sweets, I won’t sit there and gorge myself, but the addition of 500 calories a day in the form of sweets is something I just don’t need.

So I seek something else. Salty and/or vinegary something like a pickle helps stay the urge. But in the long run, the only hope is that it goes away. I can equate this to the same type of addiction as alcoholism, yet I’m fortunate that it does not have the same catastrophic effects as alcohol, yet it can have a significant impact on one’s health if not controlled. The fight continues! :)

I had 5 slices of pizza on Friday and 2 pork chops last night, and I’ve somehow lost weight lol. With this quarantine, I’ve actually been eating 3 meals a day, where it would normally be 2. It’s probably cutting down the urge to snack during the day, which explains the weight loss.

I don't have much of a sweet tooth but I crave crunchy stuff and so gravitate towards tortilla chips if they're in the house. I can only stay away from potato chips if I just don't buy them at all. At least w/ the tortila chips I can usually ration them out into a bowl, have them will some salsa or guacamole and not refill that bowl. The potato chips never even got to see a bowl...

In terms of ‘crunchy‘, my preference is pretzels. And I don’t know what it is lately, but I have been on a mad hummus kick for like the last six months with Sabra [As in..I tried every flavor]. And every time they come out with a new flavor, it’s like I have to have it! What I like about Hummus, it’s kind of a ‘guilt free‘ snack, low calorie, relatively healthy.

This ‘new taco inspired hummus‘, basically pairs with just about anything, pretzels/tortilla chips/pita bread....

^^^ I used to be on auto-pilot about hummus selections, and sometimes have shopped at BJ's which is where Instacart now shops out my orders of perishable goods... but I always just picked basic "original" hummus offerings by Sabra.

Right, so one day my Instacart shopper provided something else for the Sabra plain stuff. I dunno, the one with extra garlic piled in the middle of the top or something. It was an eye opener, and delicious. I was like wow, they have this, so I wonder what else there is...

Yeah. So now I'm like you and every time out w/ Instacart after that I've have been making my way through whatever all BJ's has of Sabra's stuff. I've become a junkie for hummus options whereas before it was just something I kept in the fridge for when I had no idea what to make for breakfast or lunch and there was no leftover oatmeal or something quick to grab.

Tortilla chips are my usual go-to crunchy thing now as a base for any dip. I like mini pretzels though, I'll have to see how I like them w/ hummus. I love having hummus w/ mini-naan but the calories can pile up on that.

Uhhh...Hey Liz... If you can’t find the roasted garlic hummus [Which is stoked with flavor, where not even mouthwash and/or winter-mint gum will even tackle the aftertaste.😁] it’s because I basically bought the entire stock pile. It’s that good.

Seriously, Sabra should be contacting me for marketing stamina as much business as I give them.😁

What I like about hummus, (or at least Sabras brand), it actually has a relatively long shelf life. It doesn’t get watery or lose its flavor.

I have the 13" Air. I think a 19' one would be pretty unwieldy. Cool for movies though.

Hah, in my enthusiasm over the hummus part I glossed over that part of his post... even though I had meant to tack on admiration for the look of the laptop in the photo!

Gee if my neighbor had a 19-foot MacBook Air parked where I could see the screen through his bay window, I could skip toying with the idea of signing up for HBO Now when the freebie period is over... as it is he has some kind of humongous TV screen such that I can tell the difference between a commercial and programming content if I glance down the way over there in winter time and squint a little bit.

May I suggest you stay away from Sabra products? I am almost a 100% certain their guacamole was what poisoned me (Listeria which became sepsis) in 2018.

I need to lay off cereal, the sugar in it is almost an instant trigger for mom and I. Of course we have three boxes here. I was so much better when I was juicing, staying away from processed carbs, etc.

And I need to exercise...badly.

Anyway...I think it is great folks are managing to continue good routines during this time.

Yeah avocados are something to be careful with. It has never occurred to me to buy guacamole from any vendor anyway, but especially since having become aware of that possibility of the listeria on avocados.

You should see me now before I cut into an avocado even after I've thoroughly washed it. You'd think I was a scrub nurse in an operating room preparing to assist in heart surgery on the thing. Each avocado gets a freshly washed knife even if it and all its pals have been scrubbed within an inch of their lives.

You're right that various manufacturers' hummus products occasionally turn up recalled for either listeria or salmonella. There was a huge one in 2019 in the UK. Life is a dice roll when it comes to dips, unless you want to make all your stuff from scratch. I can't quite get there most of the time when it comes to hummus. Even though it's not that hard to make it, I'm too lazy.

cant wait to go back to gym after all this covid stuff is over

I’ve been wondering about this. And I decided to make the sacrifice of leaving the gym for now until things can somewhat ‘stabilize’.[See my post on the previous page of this thread.] I think the ‘home gym movement’ will see a surge of new activity with ‘gym goers’ creating a new movement at home With make-shift rooms converted into gyms, where it may not exactly be ideal, but it takes away the vulnerabilities that Gym environments present given the crowds/close quarters and well, Constant touching of equipment, shared locker-rooms, ect .

I think there will be people like yourself, who will lineup at the gym doors on day one when they reopen (Which There is nothing wrong with that), but then I also think that gym owners are facing a new era of ‘regulars’ like myself canceling/postponing their memberships, in light of the uncertainty of C/19.

Ultimately in terms of being safe and staying fit, I’m curious to see what movements gyms take.

My spare bedroom is now my new Home-gym, and you know what, it has everything I could possibly need to still be productive, but in the safety of my own home. And for that, I’m grateful that I have a house that allows the opportunity.

I can't wait for the gym to be open again. Although my wife and I built a decent home gym, and we subscribed to an online fitness service (Les Mills), I can see and feel the difference. It's just not the same thing, it's not as nearly as effective. The gym used to be my "safe space": noise canceling headphones on, no TV on, no kids, no problems, phone notifications off, etc. One hour or two of pure disconnect from the world, mostly focused on the moment itself. At the house, I am too close to "real life problems", I am too close to the sofa, I am too close to a nice chocolate chip cookie... I don't know, it's just different. Not bad for maintenance, of for when I truly can't go to the gym, but it's not nearly the same thing in my opinion.

I opt’d for a home gym in the late 90’s and the gains were outstanding. A minor downside was to develop the discipline not to be in it every available minute.

Yeah, don’t get me wrong, I envy those who are waiting for the moment for Gyms to reopen, as I want to be one of those individuals, but I have to think outside the ‘realm’ of just working-out when it comes to safety. And I personally feel gyms will be in the worst possible areas to be in with C/19.

The gym was my life for 18 months/five days a week, and I loved everything about it. I put on some serious Muscle mass during that time, and I know I’m not quitting on my on myself by not attending the gym anymore, as much as I value health and being fit, I value my health in controlling something where I just don’t want to risk it.

And I say that, being how much I witnessed over the last 18 months. And I mean by people who don’t wipe down equipment, come to the gym sick because ‘they feel they need to conquer the day type of mentality’, poor sanitary considerations in locker rooms by other individuals, ect. I know Gyms will take the necessary precautions to sanitize as much as possible, but it’s a vicious cycle that Will only take one person to cause an upset.

But more power to you and Keep us posted how you’re experience is once they reopen.

Eat healthy. . .
Stay fit. . .
Die anyway. . .

Not starting a fight, but are you saying, nothing matters because we are all gonna die anyway? ?
I’ll counter there're better and worse ways to live your life and the resulting quality of that life while it lasts.

I never thought there would be a time where you literally had to ‘pre-plan’ ahead of time where you could buy red meat. Not only that, but they’re (Grocery stores) restricting a limited purchase per customer of only ‘one package’ quantity. Let’s just say, I’m glad I’m not on my bodybuilder diet anymore, otherwise I’d be screwed.😁

I’m becoming convinced that walking, although it burns substantial calories is not good for my back. Since I started this routine a month or so ago, my back on a day to day basis is more tender and I notice it more when I‘m laying in bed at night.

Gyms will be opening on 18 May in Texas, so I have high hopes the YMCA will open then and I can get back into the pool. I may just take it easy for another 10 days.
