Meet the new gym:

Second week down. Finished off with back and shoulders.

The advantage of working out at 1 AM, there’s nobody here, and I literally have the entire gym to myself as you can see. -Pure Bliss-.

The gym itself is actually combination of CrossFit, powerlifting, bodybuilding and even MMA training. All the artwork you see on the walls is custom painted, which really gives this gym the ‘kingdom vibe’ that it’s known for. This Is raw as a gym as you’re going to find, especially the rarity that it combines specialized sports. (Not pictured is the cardio section, but it does have everything you would expect.)

By far the ‘Keiser pneumatic machines’ are my favorite. Most gyms don’t carry these machines, because they’re extremely expensive, so this would be worth the price of admission alone for my membership fee.Pneumatics are air controlled for resistance and isotonic repetitions based on your performance. It’s Using the inertia and acceleration from the resistance of the air controller versus using actual steel weights, thus digs much deeper into the muscle fascia, causing a much greater stimuli you’re performing the exercise with good form, and if course controlling the contraction. What you’re seeing here is two leg machines and then a crossover cable variation [Which can be converted into like 15 different types of exercises.] You can literally control the resistance from the air regulation so whatever degree you want.

Looks great.

My Planet Fitness would have people at 1 AM though. I dropped them 15 months ago and don't plan to go back as I have a membership at the YMCA and they have a lot more and three facilities. I really miss running on the indoor track too.

I didn't realize that Keiser made strength equipment.

This is a recovery week for me. Just running a mile a day. Last week was four miles per day. Tennis, strength and yoga as well so mixing it up.

Planet Fitness has come a long way and they are very competitive with their pricing for the amenities offered. But I could never join with their ‘cult like’ rules they have. But in terms of being an all around gym for the best choice for the average go-er, they’re probably the best option.

This is my first experience with Keiser machines, but I’ve heard of them through videos I’ve watched and other lifters discussing them through podcasts. Other than what I mentioned above about the lifting benefits, they are considerably smaller in size to your typical ‘weight machine’, and consume less space. I see why the gym owner mentioned these to me when no one else typically has these.

I need improve my cardio. They have a stair stepper I should use at the end of my lifting sessions. Or make time to walk on my off days. (Which I’m off for three days now.) Spring is settling in earlier here, so I can take advantage of the nicer days to pick up the pace on my non-lifting days.

4 miles per day? That’s great. I wouldn’t be able to run four miles, mainly because my stamina isn’t that conditioned. Do you run indoor on a treadmill or outdoor/trail?

I bought a Keiser Spin Bike last Spring and it's a great machine. It's small, easy to use and nearly silent. They invented some magnetic technology for resistance that most other companies have copied to some degree. It's the standard spin bikes at the YMCA for studio spinning. The general cardio room has Precors, Expressos and the like.

I was running outdoors this winter and it was quite a challenge given the weather in Northern New England. I have cold weather gear and bought additional pieces to run in freezing temperatures. I normally just run around the neighborhood when I don't have other options.

I sometimes go to a quarter-mile track when the weather is good to work on intervals or if I want a run that I don't have to think about. Running outside - you have curves, dogs, animals, insects, cars, bad roads to deal with. The track is easier to navigate. I started going back to the gym two weeks ago so I can run early in the morning or late at night on the treadmill. Also started doing some of the core machines. I would really like to run on the indoor tracks available (3) but they only allow walking right now and you have to wear a mask. So I try to find the most isolated treadmill and run on it.

I use my watch to track my steps and have it set for 10K/day. I'm on day 21 right now. My previous best streak was 34 days. The fitness watches remind you to move, get in your steps, get enough sleep, drink water, etc.

I used to run trails but I'd have to drive to get to the trails and I haven't been up to doing that this year; and it's likely snowy or muddy. We have about 20 miles of trails in the next city over. I used to run a lot more but got cancer and I'm recovering from treatment side-effects for the past few years.

i drank nothing but water, no other liquids. and i took out about 90% of any sugar intake. ran 3 miles every other day. did p90x3 cardio on days when in didnt run.

running or not. diet is number one. sugars turn into fat, sucks. anything but water is not good.
Green tea is fine. I'm glad you mentioned sugar. It is so toxic that it amazes me that we give it to children :(

I was browsing Keisers website, they have some really impressive equipment. They’ve Even have educational tutorial courses, that basically allows the athlete to fully take advantage of understanding how the technology works and applying it effectively. Surprisingly, I didn’t see anything that they actually offer a rowing machine, which would probably be the only piece of equipment I would add to my house, but leave all the strength training to the gym.

Years ago, I never made excuses for running outside, and I live in a state where 100 inches of snow annually isn’t uncommon with a stretch of temperatures reaching well below -10°, once I started favoring weightlifting, I cut back just to walking. Two years ago, I bought a pair of ‘Yak tracks’, which I’m sure you’ve heard of, they’re essentially like snow cleats to give the runner traction on ice, a necessary investment to protect yourself from falling. One of the problems I found running where I do, I live in the countryside, and the roads/infrastructure here is horrible, mainly due to the snow plows destroying the roadways, making it uneven, dodging potholes, ect. I Really enjoy the fresh air, and the lack of traffic in the countryside. I found what I learned the most about running, is invest in a really good pair of shoes, Brooks Ascends being my favorite, and Asics Kayanos as a close follow up. (I’m sure you probably have a decent pair yourself being a runner.)

Glad to hear that you’re recovering from your cancer battle, hope that all is going well there for you. And more than anything, sounds like your health regimen is dialed in.

Doesn’t look like much, but there’s a lot going on in this 12oz glass from the blender.

So here’s the breakdown:

* 2 Bananas (Potassium)
* 12 Almonds (Fats)
* Half cup of raw oatmeal (fiber)
* 1 Tbsp Peanut butter (Fats)
* 2% milk (Protein)
* 1 tsp of cocoa powder (Basic flavor)
* Frozen pineapple (Anti-oxidant)
E1E316BE-67D6-475A-B596-ACD5C1C52670.jpeg

I usually consume about four of these a day [Sometimes 5], which is equivalent to approximately 14g of protein per glass X4 is approximately 60g of protein just in liquid source. I also add my creatine source mixed in.

In the past, I’ve posted the different variations of protein powders, this time around, I decided not to use protein powder, using all food sources consistently across the board.

Spring Break + Wife’s Birthday, this is how I look right now:

Week 3: Complete

I can’t believe I’m already headed into my fourth week next week. It’s been a really good experience this far, getting acclimated to the gym, finding what works and what doesn’t, and taking my time to capitalize on stretching, retrain muscle groups and focus on things to get a bit more serious starting in April after the orientation month is over.

The things I need to improve upon, is getting my meals in every two hours, which can be a struggle at times because of other tasks, focus on my water content to at least average 72 ounces, and continue with the cardio as part of the program.

The gym owner actually just purchased two new pieces of training equipment in, one is a really unique chest machine made by ‘Arsenal’ and also a cardio ‘escalator stepper’, which is really unique looking, both of which I will snap a photo of.

Press on!

Now that I’m cooking a lot at home with chicken and steak, I am finding out that it can be Challenging to diversify when you’re eating the same foods all the time. So to remedy that, I made homemade guacamole that turned out excellent, but I went a little strong on the lime. And some fresh pico de gallo to boot.

I literally put this on everything, with my chicken, steak and eggs. It All works really well.

One recipe I found, if you like tortilla chips...
Get low cal corn tortillas.
Cut them in triangles and put them on a baking sheet.
Oven (broil)
Turn/scramble them after 5 mins.
They’re ready after 3 to 5 more mins.

What you get is low calorie, non greasy, low sodium (I do add some salt) crunchy chips

Sounds amazing. And simplistic enough to try it. If I ever make those, I’ll post them on here.

If I had time in my Weight training regimen to actually fit this in my schedule, I would. It’s a ‘hill escalator’. It’s basically exactly what it looks like, you’re essentially setting the level of restriction you want, and then you start climbing, almost having your body in a position as you would on a steep incline or hill. I haven’t tried this yet, but it looks like it be a serious quad/glute burner.

Oh, it’s brand new, the owner just got this in last week.

That looks... painful.

There was a guy trying it yesterday, and he was struggling to keep up with it. Honestly, I think this type of equipment is kind of advanced, I definitely wouldn’t recommend this for a ‘first time’ trial, unless you’re at a very low speed and you set the resistance also very low. When you’re climbing, it puts your back on a slope, so it really is all drive strictly from the legs.

I explained to my doctor at my annual physical that I was putting in a lot of effort, but not being rewarded with weight loss. I realize that calorie intake is the culprit, but he confirmed that metabolism wise that 4 small intakes of food during the day, the first at breakfast might make a difference, so I am trying this. I had been trying to skip breakfast as a method to reduce calorie intake, but it was pointed out in this thread previously that that was a mistake. 😐

My wife was diagnosed as borderline diabetic (runs in the family) so she is busy altering her diet. We usually eat pork bacon once a week, and she suggested turkey bacon, but this article indicates that Turkey bacon is only marginally better than pork.

Yes, as a general rule (there will be exceptions, obviously) the “substitute” version of a non-healthy food is not really that much better than the “fattening” original one.

Restricting quantities (and frequency) of the original version is often the healthiest choice.

I've increased my running over the last three months, going from every other day, to two days on, one day off, to starting to run T/W/Th/Sa/Su. I've been able to do this throughout the winter thanks to some cold/wet weather specific shoes (which are AMAZING), and I just picked up a pair of trail running shoes to add some variety. The middle of 2020 was really tough training-wise, and I'm hoping I'm setting myself up for success with the improvements I've made.

My heart belongs to running and I miss it, but swimming is a worthy, life saving substitute, not as good though, for me, getting into the zone.

You may recall a couple of back and forths we've had about swimming a year or two ago. My wife and I stopped going to the rec center when the pandemic hit and, thus, my pool was gone. I'm due to be completely vaccinated in a couple weeks and hope that, a couple weeks after that, we'll feel comfortable enough to get back there. I'm sure I've lost my swimming legs, but at least I knew what they felt like! :)

Looks like your gym doesn't have screens. If so, I love it. One of the unfortunate things of LA Fitness is that they have many screens (*). The newest LA Fitness near me - I go there once or twice a week due to better machines and more space - sadly has screens on each and every cardio equipment. Of course the screen can be turned off, but the end result is that I just stare at the reflection of myself (the philosopher in me would argue that it's a good thing to examine my own soul).

(*) I noticed that they often have music videos on by disparate artists that are in fashion: 1) it's clear I am totally out of the loop. I barely recognize anyone. 2) it's incredible how videos are similar, almost cookie cutter. Most are pretending to be "strange/edgy" with quick cuts, possibly some weird lighting and clothing. If the singer is male, he's often accompanied by 2/4/6 young women that you briefly see in provocative poses. 3) watching snippets of those videos without any sound related to them makes them quite hilarious.

Me and wife have recently used the Calorie Counter app. The app works well with my iPhone, iPad & Apple Watch. It’s really focused us both on what we are eating and helped us to lose weight and eat more healthy and with more variety.

You know, I didn’t even notice it right away when I started here at this gym, that he doesn’t have any screens or TVs anywhere. The Gym owner is pretty hard-core, and he mentioned he doesn’t believe in tanning beds or the need for ‘entertainment’ at a gym, when people are here to work. I’d have to agree. The previous gym that I attended back in 2019 before the pandemic started, they had TVs everywhere, and too many guys standing around looking at highlights from sportscenter rather than focusing on their next set and tying up the equipment from those who actually want to accomplish something.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with bringing an iPad to the gym when you’re on the elliptical or looking at a TV, but just make sure that person is accomplishing your goals. You either go to the gym for two reasons, to build muscle or promote endurance/strength training. All I need is some Killswitch Engage on my AirPods and raw motivation with maximum effort , that’s it.:cool:

You mentioned it later, but it certainly depends on what you’re doing. If you’re on cardio equipment, then you might just need something to break the monotony.

On the one hand for me, my outdoor runs are just me, my watch, and the road. On the other hand, when I’m on my indoor bike trainer, it gets really boring staring at my garage wall for an hour or more, so Netflix is a must.
