Yeah the 5.8” display with rounded edges was a great size and feeling phone.

As a side, I picked up a patient’s 12 Mini they dropped and wow what a cool device to hold. Too bad they just weren’t popular. I’d consider adding a Mini just to switch back and forth. I do think the more rounded edges of the 15 Pro/16 Pro are nicer to hold than the 12/13/14 models.

It wasn’t just the rounded edges; there was such a precision that iPhones used to have that they just don’t anymore.

I’ve been an iPhone user since the first one 18 years ago. When things slowly change you don’t really notice it, like the analogy of the frog in the pot of water slowly boiling.

The X wasn’t even that long ago in my mind, and I really think that the industrial of the iPhone is deteriorating. They used to feel compact and pleasant and joyful in your hand. They currently feel… just lazier designed.

I’ve got my eye on this Air model for this reason alone. I want to love holding my phone again. I don’t love holding my 15 Pro.
fully agree, still my favorite phone they have ever made.

I took my old iPhone 4S out of storage the other day, and while it's still one of my all-time favorite devices, I definitely think a bit of nostalgia bias plays a role. Next to my 15 Pro, the newer iPhone looks cleaner. Side by side, it really becomes clear to me:

Never held a 14 Pro in my hand until I got a 15 Pro myself. I heard it was supposed to be more comfortable because of its less angular edges and my god the 14 felt BAD. I think the 14 Pro has a different and also very nice aesthetic and it looks sharp, but it also feels like it.
I never got to hold or use a mini, but I once held a 12 helping someone set it up and I had to double check if it was real because it felt so light compared to my 11 Pro at that time (which is actually 1g heavier than the 15 Pro, incredibly).

The iPhone X and XS design is my favorite one to date so far. The all-in glass design, rounded edges, comfortable in hand, it was a joy to use. If it wasn't because of the poor battery life, I'd probably keep my XS even today as my daily driver.

My very favorite iPhone to hold is and will always be the iPhone 5s.

Frankly, I upgraded from an iPhone Xʀ to the 16 Plus and the only difference in terms of discomfort is size. I can no longer comfortably take a picture with one hand, it feels as if I’m trying to balance it to prevent it from falling. Otherwise, it’s pretty much the same for me.

I don’t notice a difference when holding the regular iPhone 16.
Get a Momostick.

Agreed, the X was Apple's last great phone. Now they're just mass produced, over priced, commodities.
Once 120hz is available across the lineup I will never get a "Pro" iPhone again.

The X was by far my favorite iPhone!
My mom still has my old X and every time I pick it up I notice exactly the same things—how much nicer it feels in the hands and overall, how well it was designed. I miss the rounded corners till this day.

“Held an Ten for the first time…”
I loved that shape too. But iirc people were complaining about it and wanting to go back to the iPhone 4/5 flat edged style.

I bet they could fit a slightly larger screen into that same body size now, too. A 6.1" display with razor thin bezels in a iPhone X-sized device (with curved edges!) would be a masterpiece.

Basically the new 16e is what you describing minus the curved edges, it’s only 3mm higher than X/XS but 10g lighter.

The x is definitely one of the iconic iPhone chassis (I’d say the the original iPhone and the iPhone 4 are the others).

I would love apple to go bank to this form factor & prioritise making an iPhone that is easy to hold ie round / curved sides but also grippy. We either got one or the other but never both.

Agreed. It's not just the shape. It's the size.
Agree. iPhone X was peak iPhone in my opinion. It was a phone — not a phablet. It was elegant, light, easily usable in one hand, had good battery life, a great display, great overall utility as a personal information appliance and optimized for overall user experience. I think current iPhones are very good, high quality devices but they feel more optimized for functionality vs experience. Current iPhones are definitely post-Ive devices.

Same. As nice as a larger display can be at times, I still don’t think the X is too small. Unfortunately, phablets have indeed been practically forced upon us.

Yes maybe. I had an XS (recently replaced it with a 16) and due to those famous rounded glass edges it's the only phone I repeatedly dropped *and* the screen broke. The glass edges make it easier for it to slip *and* the glass is directly exposed. The metal edged phones are somewhat protected.

I could have got more than 5.5 years out of it if the cracks hadn't started to expand...
For me, it was a cheap phone holder on my bike that failed, not my hands. The X isn’t complaining, although, because of the glass cracks, Apple won’t replace the battery. Therefore, I’d need to go to a third-party.

Beyond the additional cost, “without logo” would be at least a small disappointment.

Nonetheless, perhaps someday.

I indeed still have the X. And keeping the former device is not common for me. I normally stick with gadgets/stuff until they're realistically unusable and then recycle or otherwise properly dispose. Or, I try to find them a good new home (i.e., gift/donate).

Don't tell Apple that! Then we'll never get it in the base models.

While we're at it, make sure to tell Apple you'd really hate it if the second lens in the base models was a telephoto instead of the less-useful ultrawide ;)

100% agree on the camera lens. I would love for them to replace the ultra wide with a telephoto. That would make the non pro models incredible, even if they gave it 3x and left 5x for the Pro's.

I upgraded from a X to 15 Pro and the first thing I noticed was how unbalanced the 15 Pro feels in your hand. I even dropped it a few times because the camera bump is like a weight on the end of a lever.

I personally feel the iPhone 6 was the perfect weight, thinness and feel. Before that it was the Slate iPhone 5. Since then everything has felt wors3 in the hand and the current ones feel like glass bricks.

I hate to break it to you all, but I’ve still got my iPhone XS Max from 2018, and it’s still working great after seven years. The only issue I have is that the 4G network isn't as strong or widespread as the 5G network, but it still performs well.

Whenever I replace the screen protector or phone case, people are always surprised at how great a condition it’s in. To them, it looks brand new, with no cracks or damage.

They often ask how long I’ve had the phone and how I keep it in such good shape compared to most newer phones on the market.

I treat my iPhone Xs Max like an Aston Martin or Ferrari, caring for it to keep it looking good and performing well for a long time.
