Hi there
i stuck in bad situation since yesterday.
i was working with my mac and felt that little bit slow. i decide to shutdown my machine and as soon as turned on again it stuck at gray screen for minutes. shot down again and same thin. sucking on gray screen without showing apple logo or any thing.
i remove all external hard drives and nothing changes.
make story short. i did some online research and someone recommend hold: Shift+Command+R+P when you restart your mac and i did. apple logo shows and goes directly to recovery mode. asking install fresh copy or time machine or disk utility. i dont have time machine but tried to install new fresh and says your hard drive is locked.
tried to run from safe mode but there is no safe mode. i didnt earse anything just did first aid once but cant see my MAC HD drive on utility folders anymore.
did i miss my all pictures and apps and data? that make me really upset cause had lot of work projects there and really dont know what to do.
i attached some pics from my start up and utility and hope some one can help me.
thanks

its older model. 2011 or 2012 i believe.
how can i find out?
That model should have Internet recovery then. Try holding command-option-r at start. Then login to your wifi and you should see a spinning globe while the recovery utility downloads. Then you should see the recovery screen. Start Disk Utility and select your drive and try to run First Aid on it.

I fear your drive has died, because the OS does not just up and disappear like this for no reason (assuming you did not do something that caused this).

So you are seeing the spinning globe okay then it sticks on the Apple logo? It takes a bit to download that ~650MB recovery utility. Do you think you waited long enough?

You must have some sort of serious hardware problem. Even with a bad drive, it would boot to that recovery screen. Sorry I'm not more help.

There is no way to swap those screens. I think you misunderstand me though, I think you have something more than a bad drive there. If it was just a bad drive, it would still boot to Internet recovery.

I'm not quite sure how you got in this mess, but here is how to fix it. (I am assuming here there is not some underlying hardware issue that got all this started).

Hold command-option-r at boot and select your wifi when asked. Then you will see a spinning globe while the recovery utility downloads and installs. Once that is done you will see the recovery screen. From there launch Terminal from the Utilities menu and enter the line below exactly like I have it, including the quotes. That will blow off the Fusion drive.

Code:
diskutil cs delete "Fusion Drive"

Now quit Terminal and launch Disk Utility. You should see a screen like this offering to fix the Fusion drive. Go ahead and click Fix to rebuild the Fusion drive.

Now quit Disk Utility and click reinstall OS X at the top and wait for it to finish and restart. This will put you on the OS X version that came from the factory. You can update to El Capitan after if you like.

What you are seeing locked there in your second screenshot is the Recovery HD partition, and that is as it should be and not the problem. The problem is you borked the Fusion drive somehow and this will fix it.

Dude! Thank you so so much for helping me out! I'm so greatful you replied as it worked for me! Apple couldn't even work it out and they wanted me to drive 4 hours to get it fixed!! I really hope this post can help others as it seems to be a common problem out there.

Thanks again!

This all seems really odd, and I can't think of anything you could have done that would cause this. I'm starting to wonder if you have a failing drive.
Thanks to all of you for your advice and help. The Apple service confirmed the failed flash drive and replaced it (with a ridiculously overpriced new drive). It seemed to be coincidence that the ssd failed at the same time the software installation was done. Thx to all.

Try to boot back to Internet recovery with command-option-r, then in the Utilities menu start Terminal and run these two commands then tell us the output of each command.

Code:
diskutil list

diskutil cs list

Hey!

So I am selling my old iMac 2011 21", and decided to wipe the drive and reinstall the OS. When attempting to install, it says the drive is locked. I did the lines you listed on the first page on this thread "diskutil cs list", so that i could identify the drive.
However, when I put in in, terminal says ""No CoreStorage logical volume groups found".

Is there anything I can do?

Are you in Internet recovery by booting with command-option-r held (all three at once)? If that works, try "diskutil list" without the cs and tell us what that says.

You need to answer this? If you are in Internet recovery, you should see a spinning globe first, then the recovery utility. Are you seeing that?
Yes, i ran internet recovery, and saw the spinning globe. All though the recovery looked similar to the regular recovery through cmd+r

Okay good.... while in Internet recovery, start Disk Utility and go to the erase tab. Now select the drive itself at the very top of the left column above the partition. Now select Mac OS Extended (Journaled) in the dropdown and apply that format. Then quit Disk Util and install the OS.

So i have read this topic and feel that i'm having a similar problem only slightly different then others.

recieved mac book from relative who tried to restore for resale.

The mac book boots directly into the recover mode with internet available.

internet connected and it gets to where you can select el capitan for os and select the hard drive.

The hard drive reports locked when you click on it.

load several diskulti commands to no avail.

within the partition manager if you select journaling it says its not enabled and would need to be abled with journaling command.

not sure exactly how to do this.

but, basically the commands dont work because of ownership or it says that it can't unmount the drive.

i believe i read another forum that stated it need to be restored with Yosemite and then upgraded to el capitan.

i also read something that said i would need to boot the diskulti from a usb so that the ssd was not being used.

i'm stuck at this point if theres anything i can do to help the macrumors community i will be more then happy to aid others.

i will wait for a reply to this. i'm off to see who i can help on the forums. good day! thank you kindly.
