what does it say next to IPv4? normally you'd have it set to "using DHCP"

also, when setting it up, i'm thinking you should have chosen "connect to my local network LAN (ie the router), not the modem options, that maybe what's screwing you up, it's trying to find a modem attached directly to your iBook instead of going via the router.

under PPoE (also in Network preferences), the "connect using PPoE" should be UN-checked

sorry - thinking in wired terms rather than wireless..

it IS a wireless router you're trying to connect thru isn't it? or are you plugging into his router using an ethernet cable?

If it IS a wireless router/modem you ought to be able to (in Network Prefrences) select Airport, then under the Airport tab, pick your brothers network from the avilable networks list, then under the TCP tab select connect using DHCP, and click "apply now"

it's an IPv6 and it has some long weird number. I thought I use the Airport to connect or whatever?

I'm trying to use the router with my Airport thingy.

yes.. but does your brother have a wireless router - the airport thingy can't connect to his router wirelessly if it's not a wireless thingy router...

Yes he has a wireless router... he got it just so i can use my damn ibook which isn't happening!?!?!

ok, good, just clearing that much up. so... in Network Prefs (on your iBook), under Airport, the first tab should say something like "by default, join" and then Automatic, right?

yesss sir.

cool. now under the second tab (TCP/IP), up th top, next to Configure IPv4 (not IPv6 down the bottom) it should say "Using DHCP". right?

Yes sir re-bob dylan.

great - (doing this wandering into the next room to check my airport mac so be patient)

under the DHCP bit there should be a bunch of numbers -
what does it say next to IP address, next to Router, and does they change if you click "renew DHCP Lease"

next to ip address it says 169.254.64.130 and whne i hit renew DHCP lease it doesn't change.

ok - it's possible the router doesn't have DHCP set up, or it's not working properly, so it might be worth trying to get it working using Manual settings.

On your brother's machine (i'm hoping it's a mac... and i presume he's connecting to the internet thru the same router?) can you find out what numbers he has for IP address and Router (and might as well get DNS Servers while you're at it)

don't have AIM, but Skype yes, at frankblunt, and yes it is taking forever (haven't had breakfast yet - it's Saturday morning here and i could be out in the sunshine instead of sitting in a cave here talking to you... )

dunno what skype is but here's those #'s again... IP Address: 192.168.0.10 and DNS 4.2.2.2

i'm gonna go play Halo now so i'll check on ur messages later or u can PM me. thanks for ur help bbl.

ok... sorry to have kept you from your playtime

in Net Prefs > Airport > TCP/IP change "using DHCP" to "Manually"
for IP Adress put 192.168.0.11
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Router: 192.168.0.1

click "apply now"

(anyone else feel free to jump in here...)

once you've done that, tell me what it says for Airport when (we're still in Net Prefs here) you click back to the Network Status pane (from Show: , under Location: , up the top)

What's your hourly fee cause you can send him a nice bill for over $500.:p

mmm. best part is he'll be asking all this again when he gets home and these settings don't work anymore.. I might be able to afford that 30" LCD after all.

or maybe he'll feel excited enough to buy my album to test his connection...

and a few more thoughts before my blood sugar bottoms out completely:

1. name your posts with something a little more identifiable than "help me" so that people who know about your problem will know to look at it.

2. try and provide as much information up front as you can - what hardware you're using, what you're trying to connect to, what you've done and what error messages you're getting (screen shots are good too) - it speeds things up a lot

3. get your brother to check the configuration of his router (a) to find out if he has a DHCP server enabled and (b) not right now, but later, he might want to think about adding a bit of security to it by not having it set to accept connections from anyone anywhere nearby, without a password

4. when you go home, you'll want to change your IPv4 setting back to "using DHCP" (presuming it worked at home...), but maybe set up a new Location (called My Brother's"?) in Net Prefs first and copy these settings into it (if we can get it working) so that you don't have this problem again next time you visit.
