ok when i go to network diagnostics on Safari everything is greenlighted except Internet and Server which both failed so the ISP and Network settings are correct now. all i gotta do is get the internet and server to wokr now

I know that sound.. the sound of a head banging against a keyboard.

Who set the wireless router up? Is your brother's PC plugged into and using it?

And your brother can't help you with this, why? Because it's a Mac is not an acceptable answer.

ok now i understand what ur saying. it says the airport is connected to the network ********. you are connected to the internet via airport.

If that did work, go back to
Net Prefs > Show: Airport > TCP/IP
and next to DNS Servers put 4.2.2.2
click "Apply now"

if this doesn't work now i'm killing myself.

just getting the razor blades out of the packet and running the bath,
in the meantime, still in Net Prefs > Airport can you look at the "Proxies" tab and make sure nothing is checked there.

and maybe also quit and restart Safari (on yer iBook)

My soul hurts.

I'm wondering if the gateway is wrong. That would explain why he's getting an IP but not able to get out to the outside world.

Look on your brother's PC and see what the setting for the gateway and netmask are.

In the meantime, nothing...he's getting his breath of fresh air.

Unbelievable...

yeah, could be - i asked him what the Router ip was on his brother's machine but he seemed a bit coy about that so i only guessed it would be 192.168.0.1 (cos it doesn't sound lkike any configs been done on it, also that DNS he gave sounds odd to me 4.2.2.2 ?

i can see a bright light. moving towards the light...

I agree that I would assume the router is 192.168.0.1 based on his IP address that he gave. However, who knows.

The DNS comes out OK.

Code:
ellow% nsl -sil 4.2.2.2
Server: 152.16.198.100
Address: 152.16.198.100#53

Non-authoritative answer:
2.2.2.4.in-addr.arpa name = vnsc-bak.sys.gtei.net.

Authoritative answers can be found from:
2.2.4.in-addr.arpa nameserver = dnsauth1.sys.gtei.net.
2.2.4.in-addr.arpa nameserver = dnsauth2.sys.gtei.net.
2.2.4.in-addr.arpa nameserver = dnsauth3.sys.gtei.net.

System Preferences -> Network Prefpane -> "Location" select bar -> New Location -> Name it ARGH & Click OK -> Change "Show" select bar to Airport -> Change "By Default join:" select bar to "Preferred networks" -> Click the + icon -> Put in the SSID (The wireless network name) of your brother's wireless network -> Click "Options" button -> Click "Enable INterface Robustness" checkbox, click OK -> Click TCP/IP Tab -> Change "Configure IPv4:" select bar to "Using DHCP" -> Give it the "DHCP Client ID" of ARGH -> enter the DNS server 4.2.2.2 -> Click Configure IPv6... button -> Change "Configure" to Off", Click OK -> Click Apply Now

Do you get an IP address along the lines of 192.168.0.x? If so, try and open Safari or another web browser. Try and go to a website, any website.

Since I last checked this thread, a lot of info was added and it's all over the place. Forgive me if this was already discussed.

This doesn't happen do be a D-Link router, is it? There is this thing called a preamble. Don't worry what it is, just know that there are two versions: Long preambles and short preambles. I couldn't connected to my girlfriends D-Link because the default was to use a Short Preamble. Everything connected to the router except my iBook. When I changed the setting to Long Preamble, everything worked including my iBook. (Or I may have changed it from Short to Long, I can't remember)

If this is a D-Link, log into the router and select Advanced then Performance. Look for the preamble settings. Change it to the opposite of what it is.

If the preamble settings aren't there, or this isn't a D-Link, check the manual to see if you can change the preamble.

I hope this is your problem so you can get up and running.
