seems a bit ridiculous to use magsafe rather than another T4 that can do power/data/video. adding an HDMI 2.0 instead of 2.1 port is rather absurd, not to mention they could have added another T4 or maybe even a sim slot.

I get your point. But No one was waiting to buy this machine because of HDMI 2.1

then you do not get it. there's no "but" here. they put hdmi on, what's the deal with placing 2.0 instead of 2.1 ports. people whined and cried incessantly about a port no one needed, and now they're just going to be content that it's pointlessly inferior.

This is not the Apple is used to be. It is more like Samsung. Remember the time when Samsung used to remove something from their flagship phones, people used to cry and the following years Samsung used to return it? I for one can not understand what is Apple thinking, bringing back HDMI port? That belongs to 00s. Industry was already moving away from that thing. This happens when companies listen to tiny minority of crybabies.
So Apple, while you are at the mission of resurrecting old ports, why don't you bring the whole family tree of ports to make your laptops absolute "PRO"

Clearly a hugely impressive machine, but a small criticism, while they were bringing back ports, why not also the very helpful external battery indicator (last seen on the 2012 MBP*)?
*which I’m still happily using, notwithstanding the recent cessation of new versions of MacOS.

“…instead of HDMI 2.1 to the disappointment of some users.”

What users? You could say this literally about anything on the new machines. “Didn’t include a gum ball dispenser… to the disappointment of some users”. SMH
Well 2.1 is strictly better than 2.0.

They can totally fit a USB-A port there, but Mag safe seems a bit old-fashioned if TB4 can still be used for data AND power delivery.

But it's been a long time since we had options without dongles.

I want one more USB-A port (and another one USB-C will be a bless).

My job needs USB hub for connecting 4 or even more USB to RS232 converters; I also prefer IBM (Lenovo) USB keyboard (its thumb stick, mouse pad, plus the Page Up/Down and Home/End keys) when I'm not on the go.

All of these need only a bus powered USB-2 hub; connecting it to a Thunderbolt 4 port is quite a waste of resource and I can't help keep feeling bad.

I can forgo that half-spec 2.0 HDMI since most higher end monitors accept display port for which every Mac user should already have more than enough dongles and/or converter cables.

And 10G ethernet is a must for such a beast expected to be with us for up to a decade.

As such, I'll wait for the next Mac Mini (Pro? Max?), or iMac, or MacPro. My 2012 Macbook Pro won't be able to retired until I get MI MacBook air.

That's if Parallel Desktop or VMware for Apple Silicon was a real thing.

Let me help you, you actually don't want a MBP, you want a Lenovo.

There is no chance in hell USB-A makes a come-back, for what? It's basically the same protocol just with a bigger plug - if you think it's wasteful to plug a USB-2 hub into USB-C, it's exactly as wasteful to plug it into a USB3.1 Type A socket. And what gets wasted here? you really need four huge displays on that thing? Because if not, you are not wasting any resources if you plug your serial port connectors to a USB-C port on the MBP or on one of the displays.

Spoken like someone who has never tripped-over or had their friends or pets rip out the magsafe charger. Magsafe has saved my 2011 mbp a ridiculous amount of times.

They should have replaced the hdmi port with USB-A, a standard which is not going away this decade, just like 3.5mm jacks.

Very true.

Counterpoint: With battery life of 18-20 hours... how often do you have to use the laptop while plugged in?

Just charge these Macbooks when you're not using them. Like an iPad.

iPads don't have MagSafe. They never have. And people do use them in all sorts of places like on a couch with people coming and going stepping all around.

:)

I would have loved USB-A. I can't find an external mouse that do not lag on an external monitor on my MacBook Air. This is very frustrating.
I would have liked a single USB-A as it would mean I would never need a dongle and I would not have to buy new adapters or cables or anything else. It's not the end of the world, but it's just some more hassle and expense that I could have avoided with a a single USB-A port.

- I'm glad we got HDMI back. At home I have no use for legacy ports, but whenever you try to present at an office or classroom or whatever, you know it's going to be HDMI. It's just one less dongle to carry around if you ever have to show other people stuff.

- Magsafe I'm not so keen on. Are people really tripping over their power cords this often? An extra Thunderbolt port seems like it would have been infinitely more useful. Hell, I'd have preferred something like Ethernet (with optional 10Gbe upgrade?) or even USB-A (disgusting but still prevalent outside of home, often people will hand you a thumb drive or something and you have to pull out a dongle).

- I don't understand the big deal with the notch. Like, if they had made the entire top bezel the same height as the notch, we'd still have a great 16:10 display and people would probably not have made a fuss. With all the great upgrades, the top bezel being relatively thick wouldn't be a topic of conversation, or at least not widely. Instead of giving us the fat bezel on the entire top, they cropped out the sides - how is that any worse?

- I like that the base config is 512GB/16GB. But I think it was shady that the "base" performance they listed for M1 Pro during the presentation was the 10 core version, while the base config uses an 8 core version that they didn't even mention (I think?). With the crazy number of CPU/GPU combinations they're offering, I feel their landing page should offer *a lot* more detailed performance comparisons. As it stands, we're basically guessing at what the best price/performance config is. I'm sure we'll have a ton of benchmarks next week, and a smart buyer ought to wait for independent testing regardless, but it would've been nice for Apple to provide more detail about these SKU's relative performance as soon as these things went on sale.

If you are using your computer in a setting that isn’t private (library, office, classroom) or you have pets/children mag safe is an absolute life saver. It’s not much about people tripping over their own power cord.

Sadly Ethernet and one USB A port is not included, looks like we still need dingle dangle dongles in order to actually do some work.

I upgraded my MacBook Pro every two years, I have A L L the dongles, and now your putting ports in again? Am I a joke to you, Tim Apple?

One week ago: “ we want HDMI back so we can use our portable computers in all kinds of settings where a monitor, projector, or TV is available/needed and we can use it if we didn’t bring an adapter/special cord”

today: “WE NEED HDMI 2.1 SO WE CAN RUN 8K DISPLAYS . MY LIFE IS LITERALLY RUINED, I CAN NO LONGER BE A PRO. TIM APPLE JUST BROKE INTO MY HOME, TIED ME UP WITH A DONGLE, STOLE MY WALLET, AND IS NOW BLUDGEONING ME TO DEATH WITH A THUNDERBOLT DOCK”
I'm more annoyed at the folks clamoring for these ports cost us a TB4 port for an HDMI port that won't run my screen.

I skipped the new Mini because of this as well.

Wait, it's different from MagSafe 2? Here I was thinking I'd be able to use all my old chargers :( Well, not surprised.
According to the Apple Accessory page the MagSafe this time is JUST the cable to plug into the USBC charging brick. So it's not all one soldered together piece like before.

that's a cool thing.
