I'm more annoyed at the folks clamoring for these ports cost us a TB4 port for an HDMI port that won't run my screen.

I skipped the new Mini because of this as well.
I don't think the M1 Pro can push a 4th TB4 port anyway. Only the M1 Max chip has the guts to push 4 TB4 ports... making different chassis for different CPUs (Pro vs Max vs 14" vs 16") would be expensive.

also, these are listed as Thunderbolt 4 ports vs listed USB-C 4 ports on the M1 Macs. TB4 is the "best version" of the TB/USBc ports being sold right now. So that's a cool thing.

I was hoping for the Ethernet port on the power brick, like the iMac. Bummer.

Me too!!

I was hoping for but pretty sure they would not add an on board RJ45/8P8C port for 1 GigE now, and down the road maybe 10 GigE. Pro users such as network engineers and IT specialists would really like to be able to quickly tap in to LANs in various parts of the building. More than once I have almost dropped a MacBook while trying to negotiate a computer to dongle to Cat 6 cable while standing in an area that has no available table.

Hopefully they will at least add a power brick option down the road. Seems like a no brainer given most the R&D already done.

Sure is cool! And it definitely helps differentiate the MacBook Pros from the Airs now (before that, it was the Touch Bar that did so.) I think I also heard somewhere the upcoming high-end Mac Mini will include nearly the same ports, but replacing the SDXC card slot with two USB-A 3.0 ports.

to anyone with a brain who realizes a laptop at over $2k that shoved an hdmi port back on for absolutely no good reason couldnt even be bothered to have it run at the latest spec that has been widely available for over a year now.

"gee thanks apple for giving us a port back we didnt need because we could have interfaced with hdmi via existing ports, and bonus points for immediately dating it."
HDMI is the new VGA. We just finally got everyone to update their conference rooms and projectors to use "any" HDMI connectors. If you're traveling and presenting, chances are you'll need an HDMI on a regular basis.

Kinda like the SD card slot, there's enough people that travel and work in the field that it justifies putting the old port back. Besides, that side would be really empty with only 1 port all lonely over there by itself.

Mesafe is very welcomed back but didn’t we learn the hard way that 90 degree or L shape limits the wear and tear? its like They made it back as a statement
See the Apple Accessories page. This time the MagSafe is just a cable! It's not hard wired to the brick. It's also a braided cable so it should hold up better.

There's another whole article about it... basically USB charging only goes to 100W and the Pro and Max chips use 97w and 140w charging which is more than USB-C spec by a lot.

I was hoping for DVI and a Parallel Port. 😂 😂😂
Mac have never had a parallel port. Some of us old, old-timers might mistaken a parallel port for the old SCSI port. Dagnabbit, my 100MB SCSI harddrive can't connect to the new MBP even though it's got a DB25 port...grrr.🤣

The inclusion of the headphone jack does it for me. I hate bluetooth headphones--uses battery, loses connection for no damn reason. Viva la headphone jack! Wooot!!🥳 I'm glad Apple decided to cater to us geezers again with more, Moar, MOAR ports😍, HDMI and a headphone jack.

There is only one thing I hate about the Mac Air from last year and that Is the port locations. On one side you have two thunderbolt ports and on the right side is the microphone. That is such a waste of space. They should have put the hdmi port on one of the sides. I'm jealous they retified this for the newer models.

So can you charge the MBP through thunderbolt ?

According to what they said yesterday, you can. So that makes those also passthrough USB-C.

What I want to know is if you can simultaneously charge with USB-C through thunderbolt as well as MagSafe, or if it has to be one or the other.

BL.

then you do not get it. there's no "but" here. they put hdmi on, what's the deal with placing 2.0 instead of 2.1 ports. people whined and cried incessantly about a port no one needed, and now they're just going to be content that it's pointlessly inferior.
2.0 suits me fine; only need HDMI to connect to projectors, and 2.1 is overkill there.

One week ago: “ we want HDMI back so we can use our portable computers in all kinds of settings where a monitor, projector, or TV is available/needed and we can use it if we didn’t bring an adapter/special cord”

today: “WE NEED HDMI 2.1 SO WE CAN RUN 8K DISPLAYS . MY LIFE IS LITERALLY RUINED, I CAN NO LONGER BE A PRO. TIM APPLE JUST BROKE INTO MY HOME, TIED ME UP WITH A DONGLE, STOLE MY WALLET, AND IS NOW BLUDGEONING ME TO DEATH WITH A THUNDERBOLT DOCK”
People buying these machines aren't planning to own them for only 1 year. You don't have to have a lot of imagination to see that 8K will become more and more common. Plenty of places that you go to plug in for a presentation will have 8K screens for that purpose. And it will remain super common for TVs to simply have HDMI 2.1 and no Thunderbolt. Thus the head shaking. And keep in mind, this is a company that fed us the line of "the jack is old tech", so we expect the latest freaking ports my friend. These machines are for Pros, not amateurs. They are the Pro-est laptop that Apple makes, so give us the freaking Pro port, so that we can do our jobs without falling flat on our faces in embarrassment because we can't connect to the screen for the presentation. The entire reason Apple even brought back HDMI was because the Pros who use them are sick of the mess of having to carry around a zillion dongles to allow for every common issue. This is a half-backed solution, almost as if some spoilt brat was deliberately gimping it out of spite.

I’m glad they brought back the relevant ones too, USBA would have been a step backwards but HDMI is super needed and an SD card is super useful. I know the pro photographers here will hem and haw but there are 1) tons and tons of DSLRs and such out there that use SD cards
2) there’s a lot more uses for SD cards than just photography, including being huge in the maker community (raspberry Pis, storage for some 3D printers, etc) and in automation and other work in general. There’s a *lot* of devices out there that use SD card

I don’t really care about magsafe 3 to be honest but I know it’s useful for lots of people and as long as I can still use the USBC ports and my cables and usb/tb docks it’s fine w me
USB-A would not be a step back when it is such a commonly used connector still, and will remain so, because it is super cheap to implement, and is fast enough, and provides enough power, for many many simple applications that will continue to be used for years to come. Ditching the floppy, and the CD, actually made sense, because they were becoming superseded. USB-A is NOT becoming superseded, simply because USB-C is more complex and expensive to implement because of the so many options and variable it provides for. The one-port-to-rule-them-all is actually it's achilles heel.

Eh.... I'm definitely not upset about getting some of the ports back that Apple decided earlier required special dongles. Especially for a simple SD card slot, it's really ridiculous they eliminated it in the first place.

The fact the HDMI port is 2.0 instead of 2.1 isn't something most people will know or care much about... except 2.1 would have allowed 4K output at 120Hz refresh rates; which is something kind of odd to omit on the first machine you've got that makes uses of 120Hz refresh for its own display! And now, the iPhone 13 Pros even do 120Hz refresh.
It also omits 8K screens, which are becoming more and more common. And it will remain common that screens have HDMI but not Thunderbolt. Thus rendering this port almost obsolete on arrival. So much Pro.

What's funny is that old SCSI port (called 25-pin SCSI) wasn't even a standard connector. It combined a bunch of the ground lines and wasn't as electrically clean as standard SCSI connectors were.

I remember putting a SCSI zip drive (which used 25-pin SCSI since they were aimed at Macs originally) on the end of a bus with other devices using an adapter and suddenly having problems on the bus which was trouble-free before.

All this because Apple wanted to save a few bucks because a DB25 connector was cheaper than an HD50.

This pro argument is so incredibly annoying. There are many kinds of professionals who have many different needs. If there’s a specific feature that would make your personal applications for the computer better that does not make it inherently more or less “pro” and does not make it less suited for other professionals.

Hey here’s a super compatible port that can drive 4K video and is used pretty much everywhere. When you are at home or your office with an ultra high resolution display and you don’t have to worry about carrying another cable We still have 3 super high throughput ports that can drive the latest basically anything there is!

I AM NO LONGER A PRO I BOUGHT THIS COMPUTER AND WAS FIRED, BARRES FROM MY INDUSTRY, ALL MT DEGREES, CERTIFICATIONS, AND TITLES HAVE BEEN STRIPPED. THE LAPTOP DOESNT EVEN GET HOT ENOUGH TO KEEP ME WARM WHILE I LAY IN THE STREET ANYMORE!

For years I've been hearing Apple tout how "thin" their products are, and for years I could not have cared less.

Today, I find myself longing for Apple's obsession with thinness.
Wouldn’t that be Jony Ives obsession. I, and yes this is pure speculation on my part, think Mr. Cook finally had to reign in and then came the departure.
I am no engineer here but trying to get everything people are clamoring for into something thin is pretty much impossible to do. The Thin is In era is finally done with

The Pro argument is annoying to you because you know it is 100% correct.

What are the differences between the 3Tbolt ports that are available on the M1 MBpro?
