Oops. Pulled the trigger tonight. In store pick up Thursday.
Been interested since S0 Hermes announcement and tried one on quickly on Michigan Ave in Chicago in 2016 (old location). Might have touched a deployment band on a display in town, but confirmed zero locations in Calgary to see a watch or bands in person (at least not Chinook and not the Hermes 30'x30' store in a store in Holt Renfrew) since people here talk so much about differences compared to photos etc. (I don't know if there's any real way of confirming which stores carry these watches or bands. Kind of poked the online store to see Michigan ave location had next day in store pickup available, but I'm still 1000-2000 miles away from any location to see them in person....)
I figured I'd jump in now before spring announcements in case some changes happen - fauve deployment on the way which did disappear once before for S6 launch iirc. And I'm rocking an iPhone SE1 and unknown if S8/iOS16 would support my phone besides whatever delays ordering S8 at launch compared to being able to get one now and use it until the fall. Tried an S3 for Apple's two weeks in 2018 and meh. Tried an S7 with most of Costco's 90 days and that did prove it was useful enough and also teach me important things like wear it looser than I was and that I sweat more than I notice so if I take care of both, I can dodge irritating my skin. I needed to take two weeks off at one point and I'll assume I could blame the sports band on some of that, so maybe leather might be better there anyway.
But combine a refund of the Al GPS S7 and a tax refund and the watch ends up being a difference of $1k with applecare. sure still 3x total cost to what I had, but I can check this off whatever list it's been on for years. I should be safe enough from having to buy another since I might count it as a once in a lifetime thing, but I've seen enough horror stories of people sinking deeper into bands etc
But of course that's 3.5 years out for S11?
Or whenever - I've kept my iPhone for six years
I will be curious to see how I feel after that amount of time though too - if all my reasoning behind this was on point and if it provided value to me beyond the cost.
