Ho Ho Ho!

The replacement fan was delivered this morning - BFB0512HA-C @ 32.5 dBA ordered directly from Digi-Key ... BFB0512MA-C @ 28 dBA is on backorder but is expected this week and I am getting that too.

After wiring the 2-pin power plug and replacing the small heatsink I had installed earlier with a 22mmx22mmx4mm pure copper heatsink for better heat dissipation, PCIe ambient and NVMe drive temps have dropped by 8 degrees celcius under heavy write load and at a higher room ambient temp!! Fan sound is acceptable and on par with the system fans in comparison to the card's noisy factory fan =)

Previous results without fan but with small heatsink

PCIe ambient @ 33~34C and NVMe drive @ 38C peaking at 46C under heavy writes with the PCIe fan spinning at 1000rpm and room ambient temp at 25C

Current results with new fan and heatsink

PCIe ambient @ 29C and NVMe drive @ 36~38C peaking at 41C under heavy write with the PCIe fan spinning at 800rpm and room ambient temp at 28C

and finally some photos

Happy Holidays!

Edit: corrected Digi-key link

Update: Shifted the NVMe drive from slot 1 to slot 2 so it's in the path of the airflow which resulted in a drop in drive temperatures to 33~34C under normal use and 38C under heavy writes. I recommend slots 2 and 3 for optimal drive cooling. Updated post to reflect new temperature ranges.

This is slightly off topic but I've read through this thread and have a question about my 3,1. I have installed a pcie 3.0 4x adapter and run pcitools to enable 2.0 and 5 GT/s on slot 2 but no matter what I do my 3,1 only shows a link width of 2x. I'm running High Sierra installed using dosdude1's patch and I'm booting from the nvme. My SSD should be getting 1550/800mb but I'm only getting 650/750 read/write. Any ideas on what I can do to enable link width of 4x?

Do
I talked to the Highpoint sales rep asking them what is the status of my order and they asked me what platform I will be using it on. After I replied they answered:

" Thanks for the promptly reply.

unfortunately, current release only support windows platform, end of December and Mac support is target on next year."
:(

Do you when is this year, more o less?

I have a question confused.gif Why does this card require software to run and the I/O Crest card, that I have BTW, does not 1387914497.gif

High Point SSD7101A and SSD7102 have advance management firmware and drivers. You can use it into dumb mode with OS drivers or managed mode with HPT drivers. Some things of the firmware only work with HPT drivers.

The firmware do a lot of things, like RAID type, wear levelling monitoring, spare space management or even send a email report warning about SMART events. It's a high end card.

There are so much things that you can set/control/manage that I don't understand half yet.

I've owned a lot of highpoint PCIe cards, they all* work natively but 'available drivers' from HIGHPOINT will supplement/enhance core feature set. As a rule I don't use them, extra third-party KEXTS sometimes lead to conflicts that are notoriously hard to troubleshoot.

This card does not require additional software or drivers to run. It runs fine, and probably faster without it. I don't use any additional software or drivers specific to this card or NVMe in general.

Hi there, thanks to everyone for all the very useful information!

I am considering this card and 4xSamsung 970 Pro.

Has anyone tried two of these cards in Raid 0 on a Mac Pro 5,1?

Any opinions on populating the HighPoint 7101A with four Intel 600p series NVMe. M.2 cards? They are QLC 4 bits/cell but have a big SLC cache and price out at about half the cost per GB of Samsung 970 EVO/Pro.
Speed wise, Intel is claiming 1800 bps read and 1500 Mbps write, which is a lot less than Samsung 970 EVO/Pro!

This post should give you some insight. We could ask the poster, but unfortunately, he is suspended.

I just read your post about 30-60 days for the 5th gen. Where they are? Seems every fab missed the calendar.

Perhaps we have reached a tic/tock cycle from Samsung? This year seems to be about QLC variations for consumer and enterprise versions of the existing phoenix controller paired with faster small file 4k performance and slower max-transfer rates, and lower-prices on existing designs while the rest of the industry is playing catch-up. Checking the calendar, we're 3 months past the yearly OEM version release of the next major solution Samsung has up their sleeve.

Info on the Enterprise 983 DCT - is this the basis for the 970 pro successor? Maybe.

Samsung surely don't need to improve to keep the crown. Maybe it's a good thing that this generation is focusing into little improvements overall and keeping the cost down.

Hello all,

due to some capacity constraints I did run into with the size of my FCP files... I "had to" install a 3rd 970EVO to my Raid-0 work drive.

The performance with two 970EVO's looked like this:
Highpoint Raid 2ssd.png

With three 970EVO's there is next to none improvement (beside the 50% increased capacity of course):

... but that was not intended anyway - I just needed more storage space.
