try your credit card company

Many credit cards have damage and loss protection. You might try giving your credit card company a call.

Those who are voting to have him try and bring his daughter in, you are not helping the situation. The price of these devices includes stupid managerial decisions like giving the OP a new iPad. If more people start doing it, then Apple will need to recoup some or most of that cost, and the only viable way of doing so would be to charge more for the product.

So, by encouraging him to try different ways, etc... you are affecting your own pocketbooks. Let him sell it on eBay advertised with a broken screen, and pay the difference between that sale and the new iPad. If he downgrades from 64 to 32 or 32 to 16, he might not have any major out of pocket expense.

Sorry OP, no hard feelings, but somebody's got to tell it like it is.

that sucks, but it's so cute that she tried to hide it.

anyways, for what its worth... i know 2-3 people who have had their iphone screens crack from dropping it, etc have taken it into the apple store and got it replaced, no questions asked.

it is definitely worth a shot to ask the apple store.
also selling it as is with broken pieces (there are people who fix them up) and buy a new one with the difference.
or ask apple how much it costs.
of course also the CC company... but first apple store!

good luck and tell us what happens.

Give her a big hug, and tell her you still and always will love her and she's forgiven. Her hiding it say's she's already so very sorry. I'm betting this scenario has already played itself out since you come across as a great Dad.

Poor daughter. She must be really scared about how you'll react. A good opportunity to show how much you love her.

Try to get Apple to replace it - say it was a short drop since your daughter is not that tall. Otherwise contact cupertino iphone repair. They will replace the screen with a genuine apple component for $229 which is cheaper than buying a new ipad.

I would also recommend a Squaretrade warranty. I paid 83.99 for a 2 year warranty which covers accidental destruction, and has no deductible.

For the record, best buy offers accidental damage with their products. I had a 32gb iphone 3gs. I dropped in water and it was covered under their warranty. they also cover cracked screens etc. for the future. good luck. I will also try your CC. applecare it's not going to do it. I dealt with them before. but it doesn't hurt to try.

i trade you my 64GB G3 iPad for your daughter.;) The iPad has a 2 year accidental and spill warranty from Squaretrade.com for $95 on it. Highly recommended if you have any other kids who might want to play with it.

Does your daughter have a mellow personality? If so, I'll trade you my 2 yr old nephew who should be classified as a walking natural disaster for her.

From my Credit Card:

PURCHASE SECURITY INSURANCE
Personal property and gifts purchased using your RBC Royal Bank Visa Platinum Avion
card and/or RBC Rewards points are insured against all risks of direct accidental physical
loss or damage for ninety (90) days from the date of purchase.

you should check yours, as you probably didn't pay cash...

Go into an apple store and just be honest. A friend of mine cracked the back of his iPhone 3G; when he pulled it out to change the track a bee landed on the screen so he jumped and accidentally threw is phone to the ground. He went into the apple store, told them the truth (and looked sad) and they replaced it for him then and there. Maybe if you catch the right person on the right day you might get lucky.

Definitely try the apple store first.... If they won't help... Get yourself a square trade insurance policy.... You will have to wait 30 days but they will replace it... It will only cost you the $95 for the policy..... Good luck....

Hi All -

Last night I went into my 4 yr old's room to give her a kiss, tuck her blankets in and all...

Underneath her bed was my iPad .... my brand new wifi + 3g iPad .... which she was hiding .... because of the giant crack in the screen that was the result of her dropping it .... which she was hoping to keep her little secret, hence, hiding it under the bed.

So....my question is: Since I HAVE purchased Applecare is there ANY chance I get to just take this thing into the store and get a new one or am I screwed?

Thanks ... and Frick.

P.S. The cutest little 4 yr old girl is possibly up for adoption.

In a household full of kids it's better to get the best buy accidental damage plan

and this is the EXACT reason why i get Squaretrade warranties with AD coverage on all my high end electronics....I still dont see how people can buy a 1,000.00 item and not get any insurance ( apple care is a waste, you need something that covers accidental damage )

Take it as a lesson learned....Buy another one or just price screen replacement...

Take her to the Apple store and let her tell them what she did. When they hear her say "I bwoke my Daddy's iPad" they'll melt and give you a new one.
And make sure you approach a female Associate, preferably one about 30 that probably has a kid of her own. Have your daughter carry it in and hand it to the Associate, it would be much more endearing :)

There is no official screen replacement policy for the iPad as of yet. The iPhone ≠ iPad.

Perhaps there is a replacement policy (for cracked screens & water damage) that is similar to the iPhone, but we aren't aware of one yet. My guess is that it will be more than the iPhone's $199 replacement price.

My suggestion would be:
  • to call 1-800-MY-APPLE and ask them what, if anything, can be done
  • to also make an appointment at the Genius Bar as well
  • be prepared for the possibility that they will tell you that you have to buy a brand new one

Applecare: no. It does not cover abuse.

Visa/AMEX: maybe. There are many cards (I know my AMEX has it) that has accidental damage replacement coverage for the first 90 days after purchase. Usually this is on the gold/platinum cards. So check your CC and see if it has this feature. Its one reason I only use my AMEX for major purchases.

+1

Our Costco Amex card replaced my son's iPhone when it was stolen within the 90 day window. They won us for major purchases with that!

If you have personal property insurance, that might cover it...I would check into that with your insurance provider if apple care does not cover it.

99% of Homeowners and Renters insurance in the US provides only "named peril" coverage which specifically relate to catastrophic claims, i.e. fire, lightning, smoke, explosions, wind/hail, sudden and accidental water damage (pipes bursting), theft, vandalism.

Direct physical loss is almost always excluded. Not to mention the fact that most home insurance has at least a $500 deductible and it is NOT worth making a claim to get $200 or $300 back as it WILL increase your rates and with many carriers possibly cause them to discontinue your insurance if you abuse it for small claims.

Can you tell I work in insurance? :)

To the OP. Sorry man, the burden of children right? So cute, so loveable, worth it in so many ways but Tasmanian Devils when it comes to property damage.

I think you'll get a new replacement for the price of $100 or more, I remember a member in this forum cracked his iPhone or was it iPad touch and got a replacement for a fee.

Your daughter is cute for hiding it like that, it shows that she knew she did something wrong. And you're a cool dad for letting a 4 yr old play with your iPad un-supervised, smart for purchasing AppleCare, too. :)

Edit: might cost more to repaire, but certainly won't be the cost of a new iPad.

+1...very cute story.. I know it's a bummer to have the scratch but your little girl's response is adorable.

perhaps you could try applecare...don't ask/don't get or maybe your home insurance?

there seems to be a LOT of threads here about how easily the ipad is to being scratched...

Take her to the Apple store and let her tell them what she did. When they hear her say "I bwoke my Daddy's iPad" they'll melt and give you a new one.

the weirdoes and freaks that work there might traumatise the poor child if the London stores are anything to go by!!!!
