I"m glad for the OP, that's great news! However, this should be a wake up call for him and a lesson not to let his young daughter play with an expensive toy. If he wants to continue to allow her to play with it he may not be so lucky next with Apple. Kids have their own toys, the iPad is no toy for a kid. :)

Yea congrats!!!!!!! They would not replace my scratched screen although it's essentially invisible.

Says you. My 4 year old loves plants vs zombies and bowling as well as some others. Accidents happen by adults too you know. I am sure he realized the risk when letting his daughter play with it. It worked out ok in the end. Squaretrade is a good idea though too.

yeah i think my ipod touch must be made out of some exotic material jking as i have dropped it and a friend who i was helping ran over it in his polaris utility truck as it fell out of the cab and the thing is perfect still except 2 little scratches

Whatever!! And Thanks.

I think it's easier for iPods and iPhones to survive falls because they're smaller. My iPhone fell 5 feet out of my hands onto concrete and was fine, but I wouldn't expect the same from my iPad.

true less surface area but you would think a polaris on gravel with its full weight on a touch and it was not little gravel it was the big gravel like 4-5 inches and jagged gravel

Agreed. It isn't anyone but the OP's business if he decides to let his 4 year old (or 1 year old, since the poster who mentioned an iPad accident w/ his or her 1 year old also got slammed) play with expensive electronics. I have a 4 year old myself who plays with my iPad. I keep it in a case to protect it, but I will look into this Squaretrade thing, this is the first that I've heard of it.

he wanted to play in the car yesterday and I kept telling him "you keep it on your lap and dont even pick it up". I am glad I have a screen protector though because he is going through a nose picking phase :)

squaretrade is a 3rd party warranty company. If you look around online you can get deals on a 2 year plan for like 80 bucks I think that will replace it even if you drop kick it for fun.

Great news. I'm pleased for you, OP.

Now get her an iPod Touch and don't let your sweet girl play with the iPad. ;)

Congrats on the new iPad. Apple probaby will not take that big a loss on it. They will replace the screen and either make it a white box replacement or sell it as a refurb. Great service is why Apple has so many loyal customers!

Yeah too bad it's dependent on where you go. They treated me like crap when I went for a scratched screen that I did not cause :).

But I'm not upset cause I do have a SquareTrade warranty if I wanted to cash it in.

I'm glad you fessed up, and told the truth. Apple generally does a good job when a new product launches.. In mho, a device as expensive as this shouldn't have to be handled with kid gloves, and the manufacturer has some culpability with damage.

Bottom line, if you are going to build a device like this, it needs to be able to take some abuse. If it isn't, then tell people that it needs to be handled by sober, responsible, and hazard-free people.

I bought my wifi/32 gig on launch day. It has had a silicon cover on it since day 5. I try to be careful with it, but you know, one can only do so much. If I dropped it and crashed it, I would do as you did, tell the. What happened, and hope Apple does what they can, (not the right thing, necessarily).

I'm glad it all worked out for you, and that you set the right example for us all.

Andy

Also, for all the folks that are going to file a claim with squaretrade, and the rest of the warranty companies, be careful, a warranty is no excuse for negligence or carelessness.

Don't expect these companies to honor these claims forever. I treat everything I have as if it breaks, and it's my fault, I'm stuck.

I'm sure these companies look at forums like these....

Not intended to start a flame war, just my opinion.

theres a topic and discussion going on now about some extended warranty service. i forget the name of it but its on the main page of thise forum i think. its a warranty for $95 and i think it covers everything. you can buy it than just do a claim. they'll never know that it was broken before you bought the ins.

EDIT its SquareTrade the ins company i was talking about and i didnt realize the guys before me had already mentioned it. my bad.

gotta admit that is kind of cute - total kid move.... screwing up and trying to hide it. classic.

call your CC company or your home owners may even cover it. I have a computer endorsement that covers all electronics in our household ($50 deductible).

So what's the deal with a Squaretrade warranty? How does it compare to Applecare? Just no questions asked warranty or what?

The difference is that a SquareTrade warranty covers not only manufacturer defects (like AppleCare)...but also covers accidental breakage, even if the breakage is "your fault."

So if you are carrying your iPad and it slips out of your hand and crashes to the sidewalk and breaks, SquareTrade covers it. AppleCare does not. If you have your iPad sitting on the counter next to you while you are eating, and you turn around and knock your 32 ounce 7-11 Big Gulp Mountain Dew on to your iPad and drown the interior elecronics, SquareTrade will cover that. AppleCare does not.

The only thing SquareTrade won't cover is loss. If you lose it, you are out of luck. But I am pretty sure SquareTrade will even cover you (replace your iPad) if it is stolen, provided you can provide a police report. (Not 100% sure on that so don't quote me, but I could have sworn I read that last time I was on their website.) Another bonus to SquareTrade (for the iPad) is you can choose either 2 or 3 years of coverage; with AppleCare you have no choice. Also note that SquareTrade WILL provide warranties for items purchased secondhand (i.e. ebay), presuming you can provide proof of purchase information. I bought a used, unlocked cell phone (not an iPhone) via ebay and was able to get a SquareTrade warranty on it, which is pretty amazing when you think about it. OH, and SquareTrade does all of this for less than AppleCare costs. And it is not some shady here-one-day, gone-the-next online company... when I was first considering them I went to the Better Business Bureau to look them up, and was (pleasantly) surprised to see they have an A+ rating with BBB, the highest rating possible. This is a real, legit company.

Now, all that being said there are a few negatives to SquareTrade:

  • SquareTrade does not cover software issues like AppleCare does.
  • There is no SquareTrade Store with SquareTrade Genius Bar where you can walk in and talk to someone in person on less than 24 hours notice.
  • Turn around time is often longer than AppleCare because it involves you mailing your defective/broken item to them, having their engineers look at it to either fix it or get a replacement, and then waiting for them to send you the fixed or new replacement item
  • Assuming you are buying your item direct from an AppleStore, getting Applecare is an easier process. SquareTrade involves first registering for the warranty on their website and then faxing to them a copy of your receipt.
  • You can only register for a SquareTrade warranty for 30 days after the purchase date of your item; AppleCare you can buy up to a year after purchase.

So SquareTrade is not something I would recommend over AppleCare for all purchases; things like computer (esp desktops) I think are much better done via AppleCare. But for something that is potentially as easy to break as an iPad, the fact that SquareTrade provides breakage coverage is IMO too good to pass up.

Those who are voting to have him try and bring his daughter in, you are not helping the situation. The price of these devices includes stupid managerial decisions like giving the OP a new iPad. If more people start doing it, then Apple will need to recoup some or most of that cost, and the only viable way of doing so would be to charge more for the product.

So, by encouraging him to try different ways, etc... you are affecting your own pocketbooks. Let him sell it on eBay advertised with a broken screen, and pay the difference between that sale and the new iPad. If he downgrades from 64 to 32 or 32 to 16, he might not have any major out of pocket expense.

Sorry OP, no hard feelings, but somebody's got to tell it like it is.

Hi All - OP here -

I made a genius appointment and brought my adorable Lillie (the culprit) with me. Without having to flash her baby blues and explain what she did the genius swapped out my iPad for a brand new one. No questions asked. He noted that I bought it on launch day and apparently was able to tell I was the third person that day who bought one .... so he said he recognized I was a very dedicated customer and wanted to make this easy on me. He also said something else pretty interesting: He said that he would be shipping my iPad back to Apple because apparently there is a desire on the part of TPTB at Apple to want to analyze dropped iPads. As I understood the conversation Apple is quite proud that these things can take a lickin' and keep on tickin' ... so, they want to study my iPad. I don't know if I mentioned it qbut except for the hairline fracture in the screen the device worked perfectly and there was no signs of damage to the outer aluminum either.

All in all not a bad mother's day. For a dad.

Thanks for all your responses. Everyone was helpful but I do feel I need to single out the person who posted that I should take her to the store and get her to admit she 'bwoke' my iPad. It was the best of all ideas.

Thanks, again!

Uh oh put Cyroceon on suicide watch

To the OP that's great! Congrats!!!

If Apple continues to get bigger and bigger, eventually you won't see service like this anymore, unfortunately.

Nope. It says specifically on their site that "ADH does not cover loss, theft or damage due to misuse."

Turn around time is often longer than AppleCare because it involves you mailing your defective/broken item to them, having their engineers look at it to either fix it or get a replacement, and then waiting for them to send you the fixed or new replacement item.

They do guarantee 5 day turnaround, so it is pretty close. You will not get an instant replacement like you might in the Apple Store, but 5 days is pretty good.

One veery nice thing is that ST does not replace items. They will fix them and if the cost to fix is not cost-effective for them, they simply issue you a check.

I should have looked that up. My mistake.

True, not bad at all. But still not immediate in-store replacement. :)

That's right--I totally forgot they issue a check if it can't be fixed. Brain cramp. As you can tell, while I've registered items with SquareTrade before, I've never actually had to make a claim.
