Gears of War...this could be huge news for the mac gaming scene. There's no news of this hitting PC yet right?

Of course there is. There's no chance there'd ever be a Mac version if there wasn't a PC version first.

Hurrah! My one and only gripe with the Mac platform has been it's lack of games.

I can't wait for C&C 3, Battlefield 2142 and now GoW and UT!!

This is great.

UT3 is not a huge surprise, since the UT3/UE3 editing tools were long ago stated (informally) by Epic to be coming to Mac. And every other UT game has made it to Mac.

But confirmation is always nice. The UT series is always a great value because it has immense oceans of free, high-quality user-built add-ons: maps, characters, weapons, and whole new gametypes that look and play nothing like UT itself. It's like buying one game and getting a dozen. Plus unlike some multiplayer-focussed games, this one's fun to play even alone: it has good bot AI and a single-player campaign. Even a bit of a story in UT3.

Gears sounds great as well. The last 3rd-person shooter I played was Alice, which was great fun, and Gears gets excellent reviews.

Further notes that Epic has mentioned recently: neither game will use Cider, and Gears on Mac (and PC) will have additional chapters and maps above and beyond the 360 version. These additions are NOT planned to come to 360, while the downloadable add-ons for 360 ARE going to be in the box of the Mac version.

Plus you get higher-quality graphics (on high-end machines) and real mouse aiming (and gamepad support if you wish)! In short, Gears for Mac or Windows is going to be far superior to the 360 original. Which got glowing reviews itself.

And with Quake Wars (can't wait!) and BF2142 on the way shortly, it's a great time for sci-fi gaming on the Mac! :) We even got Prey, which I'm still in the middle of. More games than I have time to play!

The issue is whether they use Open-GL or DirectX if is the latter then it's complicated since only Windows supports that

BTW DirectX was made from all the patents that Microsoft stole and bought from SGI. It's sad but SGI made the same mistake of letting MS use it's work much like Apple with the GUI...

After that all the engineers left SGI and it became dead!

i highly doubt it, but i wonder if mac will use live for online gaming. i really hope so

GOW Online

GOW would be especially huge if they opened it to play online with other players, even with possibly having cross-platform matches. I actually don't see why the latter one couldn't work.

cross-platform meaning it wouldn't matter if you were running GOW on xbox360, a pc, or a mac...or an iphone.(here's to dreaming)

Yup, was announced during E3 for the PC, though it appears to have been lost in the news that UT3 would be a PS3 exclusive for a while. See here.

Glad I saw this announcement, though. I had been swaying towards getting a 360, mainly for GoW, UT3, and GTA4. Never mind that, though. New Mac, here I come....

This is insanely great news! I hope everyone realizes how big this is for the Mac. GoW and UT3 are HUGE games and are guaranteed to get much attention. This should put some of the Mac bashers to shame. :D

I loved the original Unreal (I liked the adventure of it), but never really got into the Unreal Tournament games. Shame Unreal doesn't run on OS X...

It's a shame we need to spend about £4000 on Mac hardware to play them though.

Just to clarify for everyone: UT3 is PS3 exclusive among consoles, until early 2008 when it will come to 360.

UT3 is coming to both PS3 and Windows this November. The date for the Mac version is unknown. I'd hope for a holiday release, but it might well take several months. Either way, I'm buying!

Rebooting to play games (Boot Camp + Vista) would be enough of a hassle that I would play less often. MUCH less often--meaning getting less for gaming dollar. I love casually playing a half hour of UT at any time, and rebooting is just not acceptable. Nor is the high cost of Windows Vista. Early, late, or in-between, I want Mac-native games :) And the big game companies seem to be agreeing lately! Big thanks to EA, Epic, Id, Aspyr, and MacSoft!

We'll see what the next iMacs have in store in about a month. I'm not holding my breath on that "Gamer's Edition" machine that MOSR has been blathering about for the better part of two years now, though.

Great news. I know there's two weeks left of July but haven't heard an inkling of information regarding the release date for BF2142 and C&C other than the canned response, "July".

I'm sure there would be a reasonable amount of interest in a 'high-end' iMac. With most expansion done via USB and Firewire, and the lack of cards to fit internally into the Mac Pros, the only benefit I would get from a Mac Pro that couldn't be achieved in an iMac would be multiple internal hard drives. Put a really good graphics accelerator, and larger memory support into an iMac and I'd be tempted.
